To let 9 and 13 year old off in town together

They have been doing this a bit over the Summer holidays, we live in the town centre. They are pretty good and responsible.

Would you let your children this age go off alone to the park and shops etc, with a phone?

Definitely, as long as you are sure the 13 year old won't go off with their friends leaving the 9 year old alone.

IMO this is 100% Fine if they are sensible. I have let my sensible 9 yr old shopping by herself in a shopping centre with a phone. (I was there in the centre as well). A 13 yr old and a 9 yr old is more than fine. Only thing I’d make sure of (other than having a phone and money) is that they know, under no circumstances, to separate from each other, even if ones annoying the other etc.

No, they are really good and know to meet each other outside a hope for example if the younger gets lost / missing. Very good boys. Husband is a bit anxious about it though. He worries though

My now 11 and 9 year olds have been going together since last year,
It really just depends on the kids.

Methe · 23/08/2018 17:54

I wouldn’t with mine but only because my 9yo cannot seem to look when he crosses the road!

More sensible children of the same age, no problem at all!

Orangeblossom1976 · 23/08/2018 17:56

Yes that is a concern, mine is nearly ten now and getting better with road crossing, eldest will help him

Totally depends on the children. Ds1 and dd - no chance would I have let them. Dd and ds2 - absolutely.
What are your husband's fears?

Seniorschoolmum · 23/08/2018 17:57

Yes, as long as they promised to stay together

Sennendream · 23/08/2018 17:58

Absolutely fine imo presuming they are sensible and will stick together.

Orangeblossom1976 · 23/08/2018 18:02

I'm not sure really his fears, I guess the roads mainly and strangers, and the youngest being a bit less sensible I guess, he is Ok though.

Today said they could go into town together do do a job for me, to pick up a magazine and gave money for a panini in a takeaway and they went and were fine, eldest said the younger one had been Ok. So think it should be fine.
