To feel that there's something immoral about Cow Pie?

We ate out last night, and almost everyone in our group ordered a half-portion of Cow Pie. A delicious pie, handmade with local beef.

But a half-portion is made with half a kilo of beef. The amount I would put in a pie to serve four people.

It makes me feel very uncomfortable.

(And no, not uncomfortable in the sense of indigestion. I ordered a different dish.)

@maxthemartian you are right, I am ashamed of my gluttony. Normally I just have a lick at an ice cube but lost control today!

Renarde1975 · 23/08/2018 16:48

Why are we obsessing about the meat content when the real undercurrent of this thread is, as MsHomeSlice rightly points out...

"Did it have a pastry top and bottom?" I add, did 'collars and cuffs' match? Otherwise it was a beef stew with a puff pastry 'lid'.

Unacceptable if so [gavel]

OP has gone silent. I suspect the worst...

JellySlice · 23/08/2018 16:49

I asked.

Renarde1975 · 23/08/2018 16:50

Oh we've crossed OP. Grin

Did it have a soggy (or indeed perfectly formed) bottom?

What I CANNOT forgive is a puff pastry top and a shortcrust bottom. I see this trend in London. It's an abomination.

JellySlice · 23/08/2018 16:53

Oh it was proper pie. I may be a Southerner - and forrin, to boot - but I appreciate a good pie. (Shortcrust and puff together? Abomination!)

currently in Cumbria in that case I'm pretty sure I know where you were for your Cow Pies.

I can see your point but frankly I think you should just stop trying to dictate your morals/values to other people. Although I do see your point about resources which go into rearing cattle and other meat, but unless you live a vegan lifestyle I don't think you can whinge about other people.

Instead maybe get out there and campaign for awareness and change if it means enough to you that other people's choice make you "uncomfortable"

MsHomeSlice · 23/08/2018 16:54

shortcrust and puff?? That surely is against the Geneva Convention.

Rockbird · 23/08/2018 16:55

I've just googled it and if I'm getting the right images it looks bloody delicious! I'm starving.

JellySlice · 23/08/2018 16:57

Hang on a sec! Where did I dictate my morals and values to other people?

I was uncomfortable with the concept of the pie, so I chose not to order it. And now I'm talking sbout my feelings, but not with the people who ordered the pie.

Immoral because they called it cow pie at least they actually called it what It is rather than trying to disguise it as beef, steak, whatever? Or immoral because it was enough to feed a family for a week?

Frogscotch7 · 23/08/2018 17:02

Just booked my next holiday. Looks amazing. Your friends were BU for only ordering a half portion.

Renarde1975 · 23/08/2018 17:02

Sadly MsHomeSlice , it is indeed against Geneva. It's in the small print. But still.

Many ounces of butter were sacrificed to make the puff pastry. And for what? A chimera of monstrous proportions. A Frankensteins'' Monster. The New Prometheus.

This should serve as a wake up call for us all.

ScreamingValenta · 23/08/2018 17:03

Lots of food is indulgent in one way or another, whether or not it comes in a large portion. It's hard to draw a line between what might be an acceptable indulgence and what is greed.

We could all have a balanced and healthy diet eating, say, raw vegetables, pulses and oily fish* but most of us choose to eat more exotic things from time to time - again, where do you draw the line between what you strictly need and what you want.

As an isolated indulgence, I think the 'cow pie' is fine.

(* I am, of course, aware that some people might have specialist nutritional needs and require other things).

Renarde1975 · 23/08/2018 17:04

But look on the bright side OP; looks like I'm on a hot date with Silversurfer.

Something good came out of this pie madness!

pinktrousers5 · 23/08/2018 17:04

Meat is a luxury.

Is it? It's just an everyday food to me.

Poodletip · 23/08/2018 17:08

I'm wondering why you went out for a meal at all if indulgence and luxury are so distasteful for you? Surely you should have stayed at home and had a bowl of gruel?

Actually, I agree it's immoral, but then I'm a vegetarian Grin.

Boulshired · 23/08/2018 17:08

If you eat meat then does it really matter if you have one large portion. It might be the only portion you have had that day. DP favourite is mixed grill but if he goes out for a meal he generally only has that one meal for the day.

Renarde1975 · 23/08/2018 17:18

OP. Many people are uncomfortable with the concept of 'pie'. I think you just need to relax into it Grin

diddl · 23/08/2018 17:19

I agree it's a lot but surely OK occasionally/as a one off?

Is it served with anything?

Sounds like more than enough on its own!

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 23/08/2018 17:26

just looking at the Keswick version of Cow Pie (I did not know that this existed IRL!)

pie reviews

it seems that a half portion is more normal here. But does seems to be universally loved!

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 23/08/2018 17:27

to be clear, it was Cow pie that I thought was only a literary invention. I was happy with the existence of Keswick.

Oysterbabe · 23/08/2018 17:36

It sounds amazing

AlpacaPicnic · 23/08/2018 17:48

I bet OP would sneer at the Crunch Box too...

To feel that there's something immoral about Cow Pie?
AnExcellentUsername · 23/08/2018 18:07

I live just down the hill from the crunch box chippy 😁

marylou1977 · 23/08/2018 18:18

I must say, I was expecting something way different based on the title. In the US, cow pie is slang for the deposit the cow makes in the field that you don’t want to step in. I know I’m missing the point of the thread. For fun, google “cow pie bingo”. Yes, it’s a real fundraiser.
