To feel that there's something immoral about Cow Pie?

JellySlice · 23/08/2018 14:23

We ate out last night, and almost everyone in our group ordered a half-portion of Cow Pie. A delicious pie, handmade with local beef.

But a half-portion is made with half a kilo of beef. The amount I would put in a pie to serve four people.

It makes me feel very uncomfortable.

(And no, not uncomfortable in the sense of indigestion. I ordered a different dish.)

I see the sackcloth and ash wearers are here; hope it's not too itchy.

Half a kilo is a lot of beef and I couldn't eat that much so a thumbs up for doggy bags. I also prefer quality over quantity when it comes to meat.

If you think UK portions are big you've obviously never been to the US or watched their cookery programmes.

Well said Renarde - if you're anywhere near Buckinghamshire, I will happily treat you to a meal.

Rebecca36 · 23/08/2018 15:50

Absolutely fine as a one off, enjoy! Not healthy if you had it every day but you won't.

When I go out for a meal, roughly every two to three weeks, I have what I fancy and don't care about it being super healthy (& there would be some health value in a cow pie (('specially if it had horns sticking out of it)) ). I eat healthily all other times.

rainbowsandsmiles · 23/08/2018 15:52

Cow pie? Excuse my ignorance but didn't even know that was an actual thing - it automatically conjures up pictures of Desperate Dan being served up cow pie from Aunt Aggie in the Dandy! Grin

ADastardlyThing · 23/08/2018 15:56

Are people actually like this? "Well I wouldn't eat that much so anyone who does is greedy "

I wonder if the ones who think this is awful probably eat out way more than the likes of me (and no doubt polish off a couple of bottles of calorie filled wine), who see meals out as a real treat so no big deal to eat a massive meal once in a while?

Renarde1975 · 23/08/2018 15:58

SilverySurfer Oh what a very kind thing to say!

Funnily enough - am not that far away...

Berkshire.

mumeeee · 23/08/2018 16:01

YABU. Half a kilo is 500 grams which is just over a pound of meat.
While that woukd be to much for me.
A one of treat while having a meal out is fine.
People don't go out for a meal every day

HortenseTheHousecat · 23/08/2018 16:01

Yanbu. In our house we say meat should be a treat and we try to make it stretch as far as possible. Plus it’s pricey if you buy the good stuff! And not good to buy the bad stuff.

Renarde1975 · 23/08/2018 16:03

I have bacon on in the oven ATM. But I could quite happily sink my teeth into a prime bit of 8 inch err I mean 8 oz steak. (Blue)

(With a lobster tail garnish)

(Oh and garlic. Lot's of it.)

OP. I need more info on this illusory pie. I am of Northern stock and I readily take great exception to other counties' perception of what 'pie' is.

HortenseTheHousecat · 23/08/2018 16:04

PS: it’s nothing to do with greed or what I “could” eat - I could eat most things and am probably a bit greedy! It’s just that I think big portions of meat, especially beef are unethical. Isn’t it a month’s worth of showers in water to produce one quarter pounder? I don’t judge the people for eating it, I do judge the eatery for inventing it, a bit.

Renarde1975 · 23/08/2018 16:16

HortenseTheHousecat

I've read the stats on this. It is in point of fact, eleventy billion showers.

I just thought I'd nip in there and correct it.

IamPeas · 23/08/2018 16:17

YANBU the reason meat is so widely accessible and is no longer seen as a luxury product is factory farming which is incredibly cruel. That much meat in one meal is immoral

I agree with this - but I might not go so far as to say it's immoral

I do get what you are trying to say OP, stuffing our faces at the expense of animals' (usually miserable) lives is unpalatable to some people. Personally I think we should be more mindful of where our food comes from and the lives of the animals who provide that source of protein.

I have recently stopped eating meat, dairy and eggs as I was feeling similar to you, however I don't judge others for their choices.

HortenseTheHousecat · 23/08/2018 16:21

renarde

Hmm aren’t you a right larf?

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 23/08/2018 16:22

Total overreaction. Don’t bloody order it if you don’t want to eat so much meat. Very few people eat a full restaurant portion every day. If you want to be really competitively sackcloth and ashes, you could live perfectly well on a simple diet of boiled veg and pulses, no seasoning as that’s too frivolous, and drink only water. Just nobody wants to live that way if they can avoid it, and for good reason too.

Poloshot · 23/08/2018 16:25

Don't go there again then

SecretWitch · 23/08/2018 16:32

@actualpuffins, you had that sandwich at Katz deli in NYC!?! I had the same and ended up with 3 meals from one sandwich.
I love beef and would happily eat a juicy t-bone three or four times a week but the pocketbook is currently on a diet.

WingFling · 23/08/2018 16:35

Were you at the George in Keswick, by any chance, OP?

MsHomeSlice · 23/08/2018 16:36

did it have pastry top AND bottom??

not a real pie otherwise. :o

TwoBlueShoes · 23/08/2018 16:40

Ex once ate around a kilo of beef at a BBQ in one sitting. I’m a vegetarian. I thought it was disgusting.

Rockbird · 23/08/2018 16:41

I was a member of the Desperate Dan Pie Eater's club as a kid. Funnily enough the pie eating hasn't changed... HmmGrin

AnExcellentUsername · 23/08/2018 16:41

How vile. I've had a sniff of a lettuce leaf and a teaspoon of quinoa today and I'm stuffed!

soupforbrains · 23/08/2018 16:42

when it comes to steak, we'd normally split an 800g steak between the 4 of us

That's still a pretty big steak. 800g is over 28oz, so that's still a 7oz steak each, which is on the larger side as it is I think. I would expect for a normal meal size a 4 or 5 oz steak maybe 6oz...

It is a phenomenally large portion size, but I'm not familiar with Cow Pie in general either so I'm not sure how unusual this is?

Renarde1975 · 23/08/2018 16:45

Hortense

One tries. Wink

maxthemartian · 23/08/2018 16:45

AnExcellentUsername a teaspoon of quinoa is far too much in one sitting. I'm actually weeping at the immorality of it. Plus you must be huge if you regularly eat those portions.

soupforbrains · 23/08/2018 16:47

Also, the only place I know that serves Cow Pie is firstly famous for it so I sort of expect people to try it when they go there and secondly they actively bill their pies as the "[XXX pub] Gigantic Pies" so it's not like anyone should be expecting that they're small. Although I've no idea how you'd know how much meat goes into one portion/half portion tbh as the menu there doesn't say.

JellySlice · 23/08/2018 16:48

Renarde1975, currently in Cumbria, so I suspect the pie would meet your standards.

Eating out and eating meat are not things anyone is entitled to have. They are most definitely luxuries.

I'm less bothered by the calories than by the resources. Meat takes a heck of a lot of resources to produce, and eating vastly more than you need wastes those resources.

And as for being a slitty-mouthed judgey-pants, I chose not to order the pie and made no comment on the rest of the groups' orders of pie. I kept my opinions to myself and we all enjoyed our meals.
