Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

Thanks @cressida

tillytrotter1 · 23/08/2018 21:41

Invite and hubby will be capital offences too. Ditto pressie and sarnie.

I also dislike nouns morphing into verbs, gifting, parenting for example.

CharltonLido73 · 23/08/2018 21:46

When I was an undergraduate (1977 - 1981) it was most definitely "university".
I'm not quite sure when the rot set in.
I'm with you on this one, OP!

BlackberryBramble · 23/08/2018 21:50

Can we also return to "protest against" rather than "protest"?

CharltonLido73 · 23/08/2018 21:52

Can we also return to "protest against" rather than "protest"?

Oh, yes please!

And "appeal against", while we are at it.

IdahoJones · 23/08/2018 21:57

Just reading the thread and already laughing at @DollyWilde from page 1 - Sorry, I’d love to post a lengthy reply to this but I’m off to the gymnasium

SparkyBlue · 23/08/2018 22:13

No idea why but the word annoys me as well, I think it's because it reminds me of watching Neighours back in the day and I never understand its appeal but my mother and sister loved it. We just say college as not everyone studying at third level is studying at an actual university.

Aaaahfuck · 23/08/2018 22:18

No

TheWizardofWas · 23/08/2018 22:22

Work in one. Never call it uni. Had not heard of this shortening when I went to one in 80s. Heard it first on Neighbours. Really effing hate it.

gingergenius · 23/08/2018 22:51

Really?

gingergenius · 23/08/2018 22:51

@tillytrotter1 what about SANGER? Is that allowed?

BrownEyedBiscuit2716 · 23/08/2018 22:56

I'm 28 and it was Uni when I went, so we're unlikely to call it any different! It's still a word, not like the new thing of putting bits of words together, like 'Froyo' for frozen yogurt! That's more annoying, tbh! x

deste · 23/08/2018 22:56

Do you say mobile telephone every time you mention it, I’ll bet you say phone. Nearly everyone I know says Uni. We all know what it means.

CressidaEgg · 23/08/2018 23:06

Do you say mobile telephone every time you mention it

No

I’ll bet you say phone

You're right

Nearly everyone I know says Uni

Encourage them to stop. Start by saying university and hopefully they will follow, what with them being sheep.

OP are you going to explain why 5 million other abbreviations are fine and dandy yet this one is not?

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 23/08/2018 23:18

Oh I am relieved you have posted this. I feel such a dick saying 'Uni' but thought I was hypersensitive. I feel like that baby unicorn from Dungeons & Dragons.

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 23:26

This is a TAAT. It was done at least once before:

To dislike the word uni ?167
30/09/2007 12:54 MaryAnnSingleton

it really irritates me and I'm sure it's unreasonable, but it does.

Very original. Not!

BackforGood · 23/08/2018 23:40

I know it is totally illogical (as demonstrated by so many of these replies Grin) but I actually agree with you OP.
I have no idea why this rankles with me too, but it really grates with me when people say 'Uni'. No idea at all why I don't object to other shortenings but it just irks me.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/08/2018 23:45

I don't think it really qualifies as a TAAT in relation to a thread over 10 years ago. Grin If you want to complain about lack of originality, try parking threads.

Maybe it seems to trivialise and devalue something which is - even in this era of increased access - an enormous privilege?

Queuegardens · 23/08/2018 23:51

"I'm off to uni" = "I have purchased a 3 year drinking and socialising experience in a northern industrial town doing a course in something that has little academic merit".

SimonBridges · 23/08/2018 23:52

So why is is acceptable to say phone but not uni?
I remember when saying telephone and refrigerator were common place. At some point it changed to phone and fridge being the standard. But that’s ok because.....?

toomanychilder · 24/08/2018 00:13

Lot of people here with a lot of chips on shoulders about other people going to university! Uni means you went to a loser college and are worthless, university means you are a pretentious wanker and are worthless, right? Wrong, its you with the issues.

Queuegardens · 24/08/2018 00:43

that's about the size of it toomany! 'College' means either you were at Oxbridge, or you're talking about when you did your sixth form in the trendy place where there were boys and it was in town so near Miss Selfridge.

drigon · 24/08/2018 01:42

I left University in 1990 and I never heard Uni used. Poly, on the other hand, was often used. I like saying Uni, but you'll never make me say "lol" !
