Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

Invite and hubby will be capital offences too. Ditto pressie and sarnie.

bananakorma · 23/08/2018 19:25

'40 years ago only 10% of the population went to university...Of course there has been a drop in standards because the top 10% are by definition cleverer than the next 30% so degrees had to become easier to achieve.'

But you are assuming that the 10% who went to University 40 years ago were the 'top 10%.'

JessieMcJessie · 23/08/2018 19:27

Have not read the whole thread but I agree with you 100% OP Grin.

JessieMcJessie · 23/08/2018 19:27

And also hate “invite” Bertrand!

RoboticSealpup · 23/08/2018 19:29

Uni uni uni uni uni uni uni uni uni uni uni uni!!!

toomanychilder · 23/08/2018 19:35

Exactly. It’s illogical to imagine anything else

It's not. You've fundamentally misunderstood how any of it works.

MissusGeneHunt · 23/08/2018 19:36
you'll love this OP.....
MissConductUS · 23/08/2018 19:40

Here's another vote for college.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 23/08/2018 19:41

@rosewhitetips well aren't you and @ladyhooha delightful 🙄

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 19:43

Hope hubby is a capital offence. It is the worst.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 23/08/2018 19:47

@jacques yeah that's what I was when I went to uni. It then moved to 120 for an A, 100 for a B etc.
It changed again a few years ago to enable a wider range of qualifications to be included in the tariff. It's now 56 for an A*, 48 for an A.

Many offers will be a mix...for example 120 points with a minimum of a B in History. It does very between institution and subject though.

LadyHooHa · 23/08/2018 19:54

@Blaablaablaa, was the rogue apostrophe in "uni's" the one that was missing from "colleagues'" [research], perchance?

@BertrandRussell, you are so right. I want to live under your regime. Grin

Thank you!

ThunderInMyHeart · 23/08/2018 19:56

OP, I hate it too. Whenever someone says it I get an image of Janet Street-Porter saying an exaggerated ‘yooooooni’

...like a cow in labour.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 23/08/2018 20:03

@ladyhooha what have I done to rattle your cage?

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 23/08/2018 20:05

Soz OP I'm sticking with Uni 😜

EdWinchester · 23/08/2018 20:13

When I went in 1990 or thereabouts, no-one called it uni.

Now I have a son there, we all call it uni. I am a fan of good grammar/non-slang, but I can't be bothered to be bothered.

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 20:14

LadyHooHa

@Blaablaablaa, was the rogue apostrophe in "uni's" the one that was missing from "colleagues'" [research], perchance?

I was too polite to mention those. Perhaps autocorrect was up to its tricks again...

LadyHooHa · 23/08/2018 20:22

Sorry, Blaablaablaa. Your comments about HE wound me up, because I resigned as a result of all the changes to HE which I considered to be enormously damaging to everyone involved with HE, and to students in particular. So you just riled me by defending said changes and I can never resist an opportunity to be pedantic about grammar because I used to be a university teacher Nothing personal, and I apologise if it has (understandably) seemed that way.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 23/08/2018 20:25

More that I was replying while in the gym.....also, as I'm not writing academically I gave it nothing more than a cursory glance before submitting.
The message still stands though. It's poor form for one academic to attempt to belittle another's area of research.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 23/08/2018 20:29

@ladyhooha apology accepted. Thank you.
I understand why you feel the way you do and I'm sure I said not all of the changes were positive. I've done a lot of research into the impact of the consumerisation of HE ....it not a pretty.
However, there are some real positives to be seen - especially around widening participation, social mobility and teaching excellence. I feel very privileged to be a part of so many student's experiences

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 20:31

It’s actually quite hard to be accepting of errors in any situation - if you automatically write using the correct forms.

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 20:32

...students’ experiences.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 23/08/2018 21:01

@rosewhitetips wow...you must be a joy to be around. It's very easy to make mistakes if you're not entirely focused on what you're writing. I'll be honest, MN is a minor distraction in a busy, hectic life.

However, I always take comfort if minor SPG errors become a major focus as it means there isn't anything else to be criticised. The first time I had to go through a course validation my mentor told me that if the panel started arguing over the use of a particular word or picked up on small grammatical errors you knew you were on to a winner.

CressidaEgg · 23/08/2018 21:12

Rosewhitetips is trying to make a name for herself on MN. Just ignore him/her.
