Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

a drop in standards is not responsible for the expansion of HE

That is not what I said

marvellousnightforamooncup · 23/08/2018 18:29

I also went to uni in the 90s. It was a well used phrase then, I remember my brothers using it in the 80s. It's just a shortening of a long word.

Peachypips · 23/08/2018 18:33

I hate it too even though I know it's totally unreasonable and ridiculous! I also hate crem for crematorium- irrational!

JacquesHammer · 23/08/2018 18:38

The latest issue with unconditional offers is going to cause huge problems going forward

Unconditional offers isn’t a new thing is it?

JacquesHammer · 23/08/2018 18:41

Completely at odds with the point of the thread but do unis (just to make it relevant...) still do points offers as well as traditional grades offers?

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 23/08/2018 18:48

The whole blanket unconditional offer thing is already starting to die out....thankfully! Uni’s make a whole range of offers , it really depends on the institution, the course and whether a specific subject is required.

blueberryporridge · 23/08/2018 18:48

When I was a student in the 1980s, only the (generally well-heeled) people who came from families where university attendance was the norm called it "uni". The rest of us called it "university" or, more often, "college" (as we didn't want to sound like show-offs!).

Yes, generally the lower ranking courses. The value of the points changed a year or two ago, btw, if anyone finds current points tariffs surprising.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 23/08/2018 18:48

Oops rough apostrophe there!

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 23/08/2018 18:49

Rogue even!

Golde · 23/08/2018 18:50

Go home OP, you're drunk and it's time for bed.

Thanks Errol. I remember only one of my offers worked on the points system but it was a tough offer.

ScreamingValenta · 23/08/2018 18:52

I'll buck the trend and admit 'uni' is an abbreviation I too find mildly annoying; not sure why, possibly because it sounds a bit twee. You are not the only one, OP. Smile

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 18:59

LadyHooHa

I'm glad my research area was none of those things, Blaablaablaa. How unspeakably dreary that must be, when you could be reading books.
🤣

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 18:59

LadyHooHa:
I concur.

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 19:12

Uni sounds twee!? Huh? I am struggling with this. Do you know what twee actually means?

JacquesHammer · 23/08/2018 19:14

Thank you. I can’t remember what the grading system used to be (an A was 10 or 12 points maybe?) but my one points offer required that x number of points was made up of an A in the relevant subject

RavenWings · 23/08/2018 19:15

Totally agree that uni sounds annoying, it's one of my pet peeves. Tbf though it isn't said here in Ireland, everything is college, maybe university at a push.

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 19:18

InfiniteVariety

...40 years ago only 10% of the population went to university.
Now it's 40%.
Of course there has been a drop in standards because the top 10% are by definition cleverer than the next 30% so degrees had to become easier to achieve.
This is why it matters more than ever to get into a good solid academically well-regarded course at a good solid academically well-regarded university

Exactly. It’s illogical to imagine anything else.

User998 · 23/08/2018 19:19

Dear dear Original Poster, I think you are getting a little too upset about something quite trivial and unimportant.

I do hope you do not shorten any words or phrases yourself, as this could be seen as a trifle annoying by other posters, what.

MissConductUS · 23/08/2018 19:19

Here college is an institution that awards primarily Bachelor's degrees while a university also offers masters and PhD programs.

CressidaEgg · 23/08/2018 19:21

'KateMcD451 It must be nice having nothing else to worry about

Confused

User998 · 23/08/2018 19:23

BTW, I don't want the 'love of God'

DryHeave · 23/08/2018 19:24

I can’t say the full word without:

University.
Anniversary.
Next door neighbour’s wife’s in labour...

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 19:25

It’s just a manner of speaking. Calm down.
