Naming and Shaming “Trolls” Online

Seen another Instagram account today with a large following name and shame someone by posting a screenshot of a DM and leaving the name there for all to see.

This happens sooo often. Big mega-stars do it all the time.

I don’t know if it’s wrong or right. On the one hand if you’re a dick and send a message that’s offensive then you get what you deserve.... but on the other hand isn’t right for someone with tens of thousands of followers to use their power and influence in that way?

I’m not sure there’s a correct answer. Any views?

They'd have to be proper in the hanging out to shame and uncover their true identity using their ip address or something then.

Hopscotch68 · 23/08/2018 12:02

So who was this op? All quiet on my feed today

HolyMountain · 23/08/2018 12:07

Who's the big name, I'm a nosy bugger and I can't lie about that Grin.

I saw one this morning by FFFB on Instagram. She does it quite a lot, but she gets some pretty horrible pervy messages.

ProfessionalCommuter · 23/08/2018 12:18

Not detailing by naming names!! “Pm me hun” 😂

What is worse though is when people speculate about trolls. "It's obvious it is [insert fellow IGer] as you disagreed with her last week".

Scientistic · 23/08/2018 13:01

The one I refer to was someone saying she thought the person should know that everyone knows her husband is having an affair.

Again won't name but she is not in the middle class insta mum lot.

To those who get the hideous stuff, I agree it needs reporting. As a pp said the trolls that do it for fun (let's not confuse trolling with someone just disagreeing) will just spring up with a different account, which doesn't help, but at least it is on record.

When people post images of someone simply disagreeing or allow their followers to pile on to someone for disagreeing, that is just awful.

Hopscotch68 · 23/08/2018 13:07

Really??Shock

ProfessionalCommuter · 23/08/2018 15:49

As someone else said. The huns love a pile on.

They're not very good trolls if they're using their real name, pictures, social media accounts with friends, family, and co-workers on it.

Also hard-core trolls would enjoy the attention, getting a reaction is the point after all.

Good point.
