People using bleach to kill insects and bugs

I've noticed recently not just on here but on fb with people now casually using bleach to kill insects. I've seen numerous maggots in bins threads on mn of people bleaching maggots and tonight on a gardening fb group people suggesting to pour bleach on an ants nest on the patio. Bleach is such a horrible way for any animal to die. I'm just sad people have such disregard for other forms of life to now just casually squirt bleach over a creature.

Nope. Can't get worked up about how maggots die. Same for slugs. Those fuckers are evil and I absolutely WILL salt the shit out of them. Salt also works for maggots, I've discovered!

And consciousness is very different to ‘self-awareness’

Not sure where you get that from.... it is the (primary) definition! Here’s the first listing in the OED for the definition of consciousness:

The state of being aware of and responsive to one's surroundings

Sar51 · 23/08/2018 12:27

Sorry Barnaby but the definition you have just given relates to consciousness not self awareness. They are two different things.

Sar51 · 23/08/2018 12:27

Self awareness being a recognition of that state of consciousness.

Myrugrats1 · 23/08/2018 13:24

Just because a life form has a different awareness level to ours doesn't mean to them their awareness and pain threshold is any less than ours. Bleach is a horrific way to kill something

We had to be evacuated and they had to deep clean and fumigate but we still saw about 8 bluebottle in the room
That is such a non problem unless you work in a butchers or something. Grin If you open the windows, most flies will tend to go out of their own accord. Could you not just have put a bucket underneath the ceiling to catch the maggots, and then fed them to the birds? How have we all become so far removed from nature? Grin

firehousedog1 · 23/08/2018 13:31

So is the problem here the use of bleach to kill something?

keefthebeef · 23/08/2018 16:30

What about nits? Intestinal worms? Ticks? Do you have string views on humane killing of these invertebrates?

ScreamingValenta · 23/08/2018 16:55

Please don't tell me I should be picking the fleas off my dog and popping them outside for the birds to eat Shock

Stick them on a plane and send them off to Dignitas. Much more humane Grin

Tara336 · 23/08/2018 17:22

After seeing what maggots did to my daughters pet rabbit I couldn’t give a flying fig about them suffering tbh

mothersanonymous · 23/08/2018 17:53

Shit, this is making me realise how good our council's collectors actually are. We've never had maggots in the bins.

MerryDeath · 23/08/2018 17:59

i bleached my bin maggots and there were even more the next day.. i think they were on the run to find a more hospitable environment 🤮 thankfully today my bin was cleaned by a professional bin cleaning company - i couldn't give a shit what they did with the maggots!

ohreallyohreallyoh · 23/08/2018 18:03

Ah, reminds of my life in a warmer climate. I had an annoying cockroach who lived in the sink overflow and stuck his antannae out at me every morning. Bleached him one morning and thought that would be the end of it. Next day I had an albino cockroach poking anntane out at me....

firehousedog1 · 23/08/2018 18:40

Shouldn't laugh at that but omg that's brilliant.

They do say cockroaches and rats would survive if there ever was a nuclear war

busybarbara · 23/08/2018 21:28

Boggles my mind that so many people here are comfortable admitting their abuse of animals.

MarthasGinYard · 24/08/2018 00:21

'After seeing what maggots did to my daughters pet rabbit I couldn’t give a flying fig about them suffering tbh'

How on earth did the rabbit get to that stage?

mrslupin · 24/08/2018 00:27

I would imagine being eaten by a bird is similar to bleach since the maggot will probably be alive until it reaches the stomach ACID since birds don't chew!

Honestly though even thinking about it is a bit ridiculous. There are no guarantees birds will eat them personally I wouldn't risk a fly infestation !

BarnabyBungle · 24/08/2018 00:36

Self awareness being a recognition of that state of consciousness.

I stand corrected. Thank you.

BarnabyBungle · 24/08/2018 00:39

What about nits? Intestinal worms? Ticks? Do you have string views on humane killing of these invertebrates?

And germs, bacteria, viruses?

Perhaps we should stop malaria prevention programmes as these tend to kill mosquitoes in droves!
