People using bleach to kill insects and bugs

I've noticed recently not just on here but on fb with people now casually using bleach to kill insects. I've seen numerous maggots in bins threads on mn of people bleaching maggots and tonight on a gardening fb group people suggesting to pour bleach on an ants nest on the patio. Bleach is such a horrible way for any animal to die. I'm just sad people have such disregard for other forms of life to now just casually squirt bleach over a creature.

Is it worse than insecticide spray or powder? I really have no idea.

Confusedbeetle · 22/08/2018 20:14

This has to be a wind up. Tell you what, gather up the maggots out of your bin and take them into the house to be lovingly nurtured until they hatch . all lif is sacred, sheesh

formerbabe · 22/08/2018 20:16

Due to a communication error between me and Mr formerbabe, our food caddy wasn't emptied during the heatwave...I opened it to find maggots Shock yes, I poured bleach over the whole fucking lot!

😂😂😂😂😂

I read it as most people tipped them out into the garden for the birds to eat then bleached their bin OP. Never got to maggot stage yet (but loads of massive fly) but that's option I'd take. Cheapo pound land Ant killer works better than boiling water on nests too.

Myrugrats1 · 22/08/2018 20:19

No I'm not saying nurture maggots but there are better ways than bleach such as leaving for the birds to eat.

I don’t think maggots really have the same nervous system that more developed life forms have.

ScreamingValenta · 22/08/2018 20:19

What are the humane alternative methods of killing them, OP? Or do you advocate putting them somewhere safe to pupate and then fly free?

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 22/08/2018 20:20

Bleach, boiling water, insecticides, poison you name it, I’ll use it if some deeply unpleasant creepy thing invades my space.

keefthebeef · 22/08/2018 20:22

The kindest way to put down an invertebrate is to place it in the freezer and people who have to dispose of invertebrates used for medical purposes etc do it this way. Maggots in a bin are unhygienic and have been feeding on rotten food or even babies nappies etc. You have to dispose of them in a way that minimises risk of human disease - what would you suggest is kinder?

Personally I would not bleach ants, they are a very complex organism and it will not destroy the nest. You need to use bait that is appalling to the ants who will feed it to the Queen, when she becomes sick and dies the others will likely abandon the next and move. Boiling water can be good to pour around an ant nest as it confuses their trails and makes them feel unsafe so they are more likely to leave.

Bees should never been disturbed or moved and wasps can be very dangerous so its best to get in professionals.

keefthebeef · 22/08/2018 20:25

Maggots do have developed nervous systems and feel pain. Animals are a lot more developed than most people think - for example spiders have individual personalities etc. But that doesn't mean we can't kill them when they set up home in our bins and I have no idea why a maggot would prefer being eaten by a bird than bleached! I am sure the bird would prefer it but that is a separate matter!

Seriously if you’ve got maggots in your bin surely you’re going to reach for the harpic?

I couldn’t give a shit about maggots, in all honesty. It’s not like they feel pain

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 22/08/2018 20:28

Leaving them for birds to eat is all well and good but I can’t see many birds flying to the bottom of my wheelie bin Confused

AfterSchoolWorry · 22/08/2018 20:29

You think people have time to pick maggots out of the bin and place them strategically for birds to eat?

Confused
Aintnothingbutaheartache · 22/08/2018 20:31

Blah I caught a spider under a glass the other day and I swear it looked at me as if to say “bitch”
It certainly looked like it had a personality, although not a very nice one

Myrugrats1 · 22/08/2018 20:32

Just chuck the maggots on the grass for the birds. I just imagine bleach to be a awful death for any creature really. Ants it's better to just put ant bait down to get rid of the queen I agree.

Glumglowworm · 22/08/2018 20:33

I’m not sure how being eaten is any better than drowning in bleach tbh! The end result is dead maggot!

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 22/08/2018 20:34

Imagine you’re a maggot. Would you prefer to be poisoned or eaten?
Eeeeeerrrrm

iklboo · 22/08/2018 20:36

Just chuck the maggots on the grass for the birds.

We don't have grass. I'm not going to transport them to the park for a nice day out.

DextroDependant · 22/08/2018 20:38

The maggot doesn't want to for in either way.

I must admit I had mega maggots the other day. Boiling water, bleach, vinegar and salt didn't kill them.

Myrugrats1 · 22/08/2018 20:40

Eaten by birds is probably less drawn out. Hey even pouring them down the outside drain is probably less bad than being bleached if you feel the need to be rid of them.
