To ask if I’m a millennial?

Pretty much this out of curiosity. Google is conflicting. I was born 1991 but I didn’t do much in the 90s being 9 when it ended.

I'm a millennial and I fucking hate avocado.

IChooseTheHat · 21/08/2018 16:55

I’m a rubbish millennial I don’t like coffee, avocados and I don’t use Instagram. I don’t like a moan though but not on social media. The stereotype will be disappointed in me

Love a Starbucks vanilla frappe though. Grin

nannyCrumb I'm a millennial and work very hard. Please don't lump people together with your judgemental generalisations.

SoyDora · 21/08/2018 16:59

Hmm... I like coffee and avocado but don’t have Instagram, or Facebook, or snap chat or whatever else the kids are using nowadays!
I don’t spend all my money on lattes and avocado on toast though.

blacksax · 21/08/2018 17:01

Who makes these arbitrary date decisions anyway? The cut-off dates make no sense at all. And how come you are a Millennial if you were born in the 1980's? Bit of a stupid idea.

Sparklesocks · 21/08/2018 17:01

Millennial is just the name of the age group.
Not the stereotypes associated with it. You're still a millennial if you don't eat avocado!

SoyDora · 21/08/2018 17:04

I think the idea is that millennials ‘came of age’ in the 2000’s blacksax (apparently).
The generalisations are ridiculous though. I’m 33, worked hard at uni, got a good graduate job (as did DH), we own our own house, have pensions and investements, and both like avocado but we buy it from Aldi, not hipster cafes.

rosy71 · 21/08/2018 17:04

I only discovered very recently that I am Generation X. For ages, I thought a millennial was someone born in 2000. Who invents these terms and why???

BertrandRusselI · 21/08/2018 17:05

I think the idea of Millenial was originally supposed to be “came of age round 2000” blacksax. But shoe horning all the generations into 15 year spans makes that a bit stupid. Not all characterisations make the spans a uniform 15 years, hence some of the confusion I think.

rosy71 · 21/08/2018 17:05

And what is the avocado thing? People have eaten them for ages.

BertrandRusselI · 21/08/2018 17:05

Oops, cross post SoyDora

SnowyAlps · 21/08/2018 17:06

Bloody hell I’m one! That’s a surprise. I don’t like avocado’s, I don’t do instigram and I prefer a pot of tea!

SoyDora · 21/08/2018 17:06

rosy71 from what I can remember it came from someone declaring in a national newspaper that the reason millenials can’t afford house deposits is because they spent all their money on avocado on toast and lattes in posh cafes!

MsVestibule · 21/08/2018 17:07

I've just seen you don't like avocados! What, not even crushed on wholemeal, seeded toast with a squeeze of lemon juice and maybe some chilli flakes sprinkled on, which you pay £11.75 for, rather than saving for a mortgage deposit?

Sorry, you're definitely not a millennial then.

BeefyCakes · 21/08/2018 17:11

Then we have xennials...

thecapitalsunited · 21/08/2018 17:13

I’m a shit millennial. I like avocados but I clearly haven’t eaten enough of them so DH and I were able to get a big enough deposit up mortgage for a house.

CrispsAndDip · 21/08/2018 17:17

At 36 I assumed I was way too old to be classed as a millenial but here I am.

JennyBlueWren · 21/08/2018 17:20

Wow dh and I are millennial s (just)! Will remind him of that when he's next mocking or moaning about them.

LaurieMarlow · 21/08/2018 17:23

No one ever talks about Gen X. It's like we don't exist.

To be fair, im 37 so 'cuspy' and I bloody love avocados so identify with older millennial a lot.

SoyDora · 21/08/2018 17:25

LaurieMarlow that’s probably a good thing, if they’re not talking about you then they’re not blaming you for all that is wrong with the world!

Taygete · 21/08/2018 17:25

I found this podcast interesting (and a bit more positive) re generational theory. Millennials are here to shake things up! (I'm not one)

LaurieMarlow · 21/08/2018 17:27

True SoyDora

Riotgrrrrrl · 21/08/2018 17:27

Officially I'm Gen X (who I think should be the Forgotten Generation these days seeing as all anyone goes on about is the Boomers and the Millennials)

But I'm actually part of the micro "xennial" generation which is those of us who had an analogue childhood (like gen X) and a digital adulthood (like millennials) it's those us born 1977-1983 we're pretty unique! Smile
