In relation to a 10 week old baby?

OP posts:
cakecakecheese · 21/08/2018 13:17

Apparently a woman told my Mum I was a lovely boy when I was a baby. I was wearing blue but it was a dress...

nannyCrumb · 21/08/2018 13:18

@TheViceOfReason

You're brilliant. It was my first thought, too.

Subject-verb agreement is a fundamental!

@OP

There isn't much more to say about babies.

"Do they shit a lot?"

"Do you hope they'll grow into their face?"

They're making small talk because babies are only interesting to their parents. Close relatives at a push.

Seeingadistance · 21/08/2018 13:18

I can understand the OP being offended if anyone asked her if her baby was a dog or a bitch, but boy or girl? Nope.

SoupDragon · 21/08/2018 13:18

I have twins. When they were babies, I got asked so many times if they were twins.

Someone asked me if two of mine were twins recently. One is 17, the other is 12 😂😂

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 21/08/2018 13:19

Well how else do you tell? At that age they all pretty much resemble a potato.

nocoriander · 21/08/2018 13:21

Yes, YABVU.

Iggi999 · 21/08/2018 13:21

badges not badgers ffs.
Though a pronoun badger sounds pretty good

MissusGeneHunt · 21/08/2018 13:23

Do badgers have labels @Iggi999 GrinGrin

Yabu op, although everyone's a little sensitive after having a baby I think. Don't let it bother you.

sexnotgender · 21/08/2018 13:24

I’d like a pronoun badger!

Be a lot less tedious than actual pronoun badges.

sexnotgender · 21/08/2018 13:25

Would the pronoun badger go around biting all the whiny arseholes who put their pronouns on their Twitter etc.?

PlatypusPie · 21/08/2018 13:28

I don’t think asking the sex of a dog is that common either as an opening conversational gambit. Name, breed ( if unclear or cross) or age maybe.

starcrossedseahorse · 21/08/2018 13:28

sexnotgender oh if only...

SoyDora · 21/08/2018 13:29

I have twins. When they were babies, I got asked so many times if they were twins

When DD1 was 20 months old, walking next to me chatting away and DD1 was a newborn asleep in the pram someone asked me if they were twins Confused

MadRainbow · 21/08/2018 13:33

I like BananaToffo 's idea, also YABU I can't tell any difference in newborn features to identify male or female, they all look like wrinkly aliens to me (that includes my own)

DieAntword · 21/08/2018 13:36

My dds always got called boys up until around nine months because I choose gender neutral clothes. It started to grate on me by the end

My boys are almost always wearing at least one blue thing (not intentional but I just like blue so pick it a lot subconsciously) and as babies still got called girls all the time. We have a familial trait of long eyelashes and apparently that is enough for someone all in blue, short hair, even what seems to me a clearly boyish facial structure to be deemed a girl. No glitter or pink required. Just eyelashes.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 21/08/2018 13:39

YABU OP.

They all look like potatoes at that age.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 21/08/2018 13:40

One of my best friends had twins and when they were very tiny we went to the shops carrying one each in slings which sort of looked like bags. Anyway, you couldn't really see the baby that I was holding and the man on the deli counter asked if they were twins, to which I replied "hers is a baby, I'm just shoplifting". His face was a picture Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2018 13:41

I sometimes ask the sex of a dog if a quick glance under doesn't reveal all, or the collar is neutral - lots of owners do seem to choose 'feminine' colours or style for bitches. Apart from not wanting to call a dog 'it', there's a good reason if you've got your own dog with you - they often interact differently depending on their sexes.

Babies - it's just normal social interaction, and the fact we have gendered personal pronouns makes it awkward to have a conversation if you don't know the baby's sex. (Correct uses of sex and gender!Wink)

NonaGrey · 21/08/2018 13:51

I just feel it’s a question usually aimed at a dog

What now? Confused

Why would anyone care what sex a dog was?

I’m not the least bit interested in anyone’s dog and wouldn’t pretend to be but I will pretend to be interested in your baby.

PamsterWheel · 21/08/2018 13:51

Yanbu

In the old days parents would get offended if you referred to their baby as a he if the baby was a she and vice versa.

These days of course it is pure bigotry that fuels this. Far more offensive to ask the question. Baby hasn't even decided yet, after all.

Yabu

FFS. Seriously?

Isawthelight · 21/08/2018 13:57

YABVU

MereDintofPandiculation · 21/08/2018 13:58

Difficult to small talk about someone else's baby. So you end up with "how old is it?" ... but nothing risks enraging a new mum as much as calling her PFB "it"...so you need to start by establishing whether it's a "he" or a "she".

donquixotedelamancha · 21/08/2018 13:58

Actually, I hate boy/girl for dogs. They are dogs or bitches

I've never thought of this as a dog question either. Definitely babies that are either boys or girls. Perhaps OP is confused and expects people to ask whether her child is a dog or a bitch?

MindBodyChocolate · 21/08/2018 14:01

Don’t take offense, it’s just small talk and ppl wanting to engage with you over a cute little baby. I miss all the unsolicited compliments I got when my 2 were babies :)

niknac1 · 21/08/2018 14:02

I think it’s normal conversation and inoffensive.
