To think I’m going to die after eating lightly cooked edamame?

BigBlueBubble · 20/08/2018 21:51

I lightly stir fried some edamame and ate them crunchy. Put the packet in the bin while tidying up and it says Caution:Do not eat raw. A quick check on Google reveals that raw edamame are poisonous. I now feel sick but it might be psychological. Am I going to die?

I'm afraid I have no idea what that is but I'm sure you will be ok. How poisonous exactly?

bluerunningshoes · 20/08/2018 21:53

unlikely to die, but raw legumes can make you feel really really ill for a couple of days.

ClandestineAdulation · 20/08/2018 21:55

Reminded me of this: www.google.gg/amp/s/metro.co.uk/2016/10/31/woman-takes-on-tesco-after-edamame-beans-made-her-violently-ill-6225272/amp/

Clearly the woman didn’t die, but was definitely unwell for a few days. Although, I suppose it depends how ‘lightly’ you cooked them as to whether or not they were completely raw.

StealthPolarBear · 20/08/2018 21:57

I eat them raw all the time. Had no Idea.
Well in those little boxes tesco sell near the stir fry stuff. Is that raw

Laiste · 20/08/2018 21:57

Oh, they're soya bean pods.

You might have a bad tummy tonight OP. Not fatal though. ''short term digestive problems''.

Were they frozen. I have always assumed those are precooked and throw them into salads to thaw by lunchtime. Never felt ill. Have I just been lucky?

BigBlueBubble · 20/08/2018 22:02

Yes they were frozen. The Caution:Do Not Eat Raw was on the back in small letters. Perhaps they think it’s common knowledge that raw edamame are poisonous? I certainly didn’t know. IMO the warning should have been in big red letters on the front!

OP posts:
Laiste · 20/08/2018 22:06

Blimey they're really not good when raw Shock

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/08/2018 22:06

I didn't know that about edamame. Don't think I've eaten them raw, but have certainly eaten peas raw from the pod. I wonder if they're different, or if I've been dicing with death

Laiste · 20/08/2018 22:07

I agree the warning should be bold on the packets.

BigBlueBubble · 20/08/2018 22:12

Stupid me for not reading the packet but I didn’t think I needed to check the instructions on a packet of veg. I know there’s other stuff you can’t eat raw eg potatoes but edamame are less common and look similar to peas which you can eat raw.

itsallgravybaby · 20/08/2018 22:14

I've done this before and survived. It was however a very eventful night 💩 💩

And my stomach was performing a symphony!! Good luck OP!

WiltedDaffs · 20/08/2018 22:14

A packet of frozen peas has the same warning www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/250172580

It seems to be a food borne pathogen reason, cooking kills bacteria which may not have died during freezing.

Astrid2 · 20/08/2018 22:15

I have a bag of frozen shallot onions that say caution do not eat raw on them. Is it maybe to do with the listeria outbreak in frozen veg?

stripeytshirt77 · 20/08/2018 22:16

So are they considered raw in the little snack pots? Because I have them all the time and have (touch wood) never been ill.

Childrenofthesun · 20/08/2018 22:17

Were they the ones in the pods? I buy the Yukuta ones from Ocado and I'm sure most frozen ones are pre-cooked.

ABitCrapper · 20/08/2018 22:18

I lightly stir fried a Sainsbury's stir fry with edamame in a couple of years ago. I had a very sore tummy and the squits for a few days but that was it.

Muuuuuuuum · 20/08/2018 22:18

I eat raw potato - is that bad?

Also eat frozen peas still frozen and feed them to my kids like that. Are we dicing with death?

45redballoons · 20/08/2018 22:18

I’m sure they’re cooked before frozen but I too just thaw them all the time, sometimes I even pinch a few frozen, eat bags of fresh peas from the pod. Never made me ill.

TomHardysNextWife · 20/08/2018 22:22

The Yukuta ones from Ocado say ready to eat once defrosted.

They're pre cooked.

rosy71 · 20/08/2018 22:27

I know there’s other stuff you can’t eat raw eg potatoes

I have always eaten raw potatoes with no ill effects. I didn't know you weren't supposed to eat them. On the other hand, I have never heard of edamame, let alone eaten it!

HarshingMyMellow · 20/08/2018 22:28

I don't know about edamame but I used to eat frozen peas&sweetcorn as a snack all the time and I'm still here or at least I think so.

Sorry, not much help.

NeeChee · 20/08/2018 22:30

My partner eats raw potato all the time. He says it's good for you.

Hohofortherobbers · 20/08/2018 22:33

Rosy, how and why do you want raw potatoes??

Oysterbabe · 20/08/2018 22:34

Why would anyone eat raw potato?! Yuck.
