Jamie Oliver's 'jerk rice'

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 18:45

Jamie Oliver has been accused of cultural appropriation for calling a new product "punchy jerk rice".
The decision to label the microwavable rice "jerk" has been criticised, because the product doesn't contain many of the ingredients traditionally used in a Jamaican jerk marinade.

What we think of this?! As someone of Caribbean descent, who loves jerk, and raised an eyebrow when I looked at the ingredients, I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow... not offended, just baffled!

AIBU to think that if you create something new, you call it something new...?

The best response to this was Eamonn Holmes accusing the chef on This Morning of cultural appropriation because he was making potatoes.

StealthPolarBear · 20/08/2018 19:34

Thanks grimbles, you're the only one or no one else found it funny :o

OutPinked · 20/08/2018 19:35

BeeFarseer
Maybe he's named it after himself

This Grin.

StealthPolarBear · 20/08/2018 19:36

It's all going to be fine, brilliant!
I do actually like Jamie though. Never mind the detail of what he did or didn't do, he got childhood obesity on the priority list

OlennasWimple · 20/08/2018 19:36

TBF it's got to taste better than a Vesta curry, surely?

RoadToRivendell · 20/08/2018 19:36

I think the main issue is this "jerk rice" doesn't exist in RL apart from in the head of Jamie and his marketing team.

A fair few successful food 'innovations' began thusly.

oppossum · 20/08/2018 19:37

I think Jerk rice is fine and totally a thing.

While I have your attention, I’m looking to open a cafe with a traditional Sunday roast- lamb, veg filled pasta with a tomato sauce. Hope to see you there...!

derxa · 20/08/2018 19:37

I demand that Jamie makes a public statement to apologise.

Heartofgoldheadofcabbage · 20/08/2018 19:37

@PPPMA...yup my Mum (if she was well enough) would be kissing her teeth and looking at J.O Rice asking “Wha-de-rarse-is-dis” Smile

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 19:37

@BuntyII but that doesn't make sense? Potato isn't a national dish exclusive to one culture... and wouldn't they need to be cooking potatoes but claiming they're carrots for it to be comparable?

OP posts:
BuntyII · 20/08/2018 19:38

@PPPMA it was a joke Confused

NameChangedAgain18 · 20/08/2018 19:38

The MP Dawn Butler who talked about it is a bit of a (insert mild insult) though

She's one of the stupidest members of the PLP. Apart from several other members of the opposition front bench like Angela Raynor , that is. It's tragic to see just how dim-witted these people are. As a long-standing Labour voter, I now find myself praying that they never win an election. Still, it's a good thing there's nothing else going on in the country, other than Jamaican cuisine, that the opposition should be paying attention to, isn't it?

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 19:39

@Heartofgoldheadofcabbage mi hear yuh Grin

Not sure anyone has trademarked the name? I agree with PP, it’s no different to ‘italian’ carbonara or ‘Chinese’ style something or other. Don’t see anyone getting worked up about that?

If you don’t feel it’s authentic or will taste good, there’s a simple answer...don’t buy it.

StripySocksAndDocs · 20/08/2018 19:42

BeeFarseer: "Maybe he's named it after himself."
😂
That'll be it. He's not invented jerk rice, as in the mirroring the jerk the meat marinade.

Wonder what it's like? I don't find a lot of his recipes particularly brilliant (or even good). A few are, but more aren't .

Is it on the internet? I'm off to find it.

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 19:42

This is just another thing to add to the catalogue of his life-long twattery.

derxa · 20/08/2018 19:43

They've just shown it being microwaved on CH4 News. It looks bloody disgusting and I eat anything.

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 19:43

How long does it take to make a Jamie Oliver 30min meal?

2 hours.

I'll get my coat and see myself out.

ClaudiaNaughton · 20/08/2018 19:43

Well I’m looking forward to trying itGrin

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 19:45

But you can't 'jerk' rice - it's an actual style of cooking, not just a flavour. It literally is the process or rubbing meat with pretty specific spices and cooking it. It's a really traditional way of cooking things in the Caribbean. And ya cyah put aubergine in Jerk spice!
