Jamie Oliver's 'jerk rice'

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 18:45

Jamie Oliver has been accused of cultural appropriation for calling a new product "punchy jerk rice".
The decision to label the microwavable rice "jerk" has been criticised, because the product doesn't contain many of the ingredients traditionally used in a Jamaican jerk marinade.

What we think of this?! As someone of Caribbean descent, who loves jerk, and raised an eyebrow when I looked at the ingredients, I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow... not offended, just baffled!

AIBU to think that if you create something new, you call it something new...?

Reggae reggae pizza yuk

As a Jamaican, I actually hate Reggae Reggae sauce, but I have to admire what Levi has done for himself.

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 21:31

Who does this help?

Not the brown or black ones of our society. That's the answer @Mariatequila. There I said it.

Queenbean · 20/08/2018 21:31

How many years do white people have to apologise for the behaviour of their ancestors until accusations of things like this stop?

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 21:31

@Holyguacamoley apart from tandoori masala is a seasoning, just like jerk is. The tandoori foods you buy in supermarkets are at least flavoured with tandoori sauce. Jamie Oliver has called something jerk that isn't jerk. It would maybe be tolerable if it actually had jerk seasoning in it!

Also, at least the hoisin noodles you probably have actually taste like hoisin!

I think you've missed the point...

“Today 21:31 Queenbean

Maybe by way of apology we could just leave cultures we raped and pillaged the fuck alone for a few decades?

Lunde · 20/08/2018 21:35

It's just part of the current faux "I'm so outraged" epidemic on social media!

I don't remember anyone being outraged by other chefs' weird cultural cross over dishes. For example Ainsley Harriot has some really strange ones that long predate Jamie Oliver's

  • "Pilau & Green Lentil Microwave Cous Cous"
  • Szechuan Hot and Sour Cuppa soup
  • Mexican Cous Cous, Rice, Bulgur Wheat & Lentil Snack Pot
  • Kashmiri Pilau rice

Perhaps we should clutch our pearls!

Until the day you die and then your descendants will pick up the grievance and then they'll die too. Repeat, Rinse and Recycle. I'm sick of having white people telling me in various formulations to "get over it". I won't.

Mariatequila · 20/08/2018 21:36

‘Isn’t it funny that Caribbean families have been making and selling jerk for many years yet somehow haven’t ended to with a TV show, range of foods and homeware, books and foods?

I wonder why a food company wanted to market a white mans jerk instead of theirs eh? I WONDER’

I’d have to disagree with the insinuation that Jamie got to market carribean food because he’s white ffs. It’s the exact opposite of what marketing is supposed to do.
& Id have to disagree that no one of carribean descent has had their own range of foods or TV show -
Levi Roots has certainly had his success from his product range & Ainsley Harriott is one of the most famous TV chefs and has product ranges.

Dorsetdays · 20/08/2018 21:37

And Levi Roots did have a TV show and does have numerous cookery books and a massive food and drinks range so....

To what benefit though? When this current generation of white people haven’t done this it seems awful angry and bitter at the wrong people.

glintandglide · 20/08/2018 21:38

Ainsley harriot isn’t making ethnic food though, he’s a chef who is black. Levi roots is literally the only one and got a chance by going on dragons den, somewhat unusual

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 21:38

I'm not Jamaincan @JayDot500 but I totally agree with this. I am incredibly proud of him. I walk past his little Rum/restaurant kind of place very often and do think 'well done that man!'

OlderThanAverageforMN · 20/08/2018 21:39

"@glintandglide" Ainsley Harriot, who, by the way, adds soy sauce to his jerk recipe. Just saying.

JaneJeffer · 20/08/2018 21:40

Bee Grin

Too bad. I'm so sorry I won't be forgiving them... I'm sure they must feel awful. I'll try and find it in myself to give a single shit about their feelings.

Mariatequila · 20/08/2018 21:41

@glintandglide yes he does! Ainsley Harriott has had a whole range of foods.

Mariatequila · 20/08/2018 21:43

Forgiving them for being born white?

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 21:43

EXACTLY THIS!

Ainsley and Levi are somewhat individual and prolific successes. Many men like them don't ever get a sniff of that level of success. Stop comparing Apples to Pears.

Queenbean · 20/08/2018 21:44

Right. So you’re angry at an entire group of people who haven’t done anything wrong to you, and yet you expect white people to apologise somehow for something they haven’t even done, and you don’t give a shit about them anyway?

Well I guess that’s that then. We’ll just eat our Jamie Oliver jerk rice and move on.

nokidshere · 20/08/2018 21:45

I don't understand the problem? I have my own version of all sorts of things. I make chicken with a blend of spices I found on the internet and I call it kfc even though the ingredients aren't.

Jerk is what? A blend of spices? Is it trade marked? I thought jerk (until now) was disgusting dried strips of meat? There are a million jerk recipes on the internet all with different ingredients.

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 21:46

That's jerk-y.

Well Jamie is just doing his best to give the professionally offended something else to whine about.

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 21:48

@Mariatequila Yes. As it happens I was born half white so was quite 'lucky' from birth. But no - I give zero shits now about it. They will need to suffer from the consequences for as many years as they are here much like my ancestors had to. I have zero qualms about saying white privilege is marvellous. I wish I had it on its own. Jamie Oliver though he might have of course experienced other problems in his life is gaining massively from this. I don't care. If you are white you have NO RIGHT to tell me anything about what does and doesn't constitute appropriation or racism or what I should be offended about. If you are white then you should literally go out of your way to be my ally.

MissEliza · 20/08/2018 21:50

It's utter crap. For once, I'm on his side.

Bicyclethief · 20/08/2018 21:50

Total nonsense, absolutely.
