To wonder how the fluffing hell you can 'fall off' a cruise ship?!

I mean HOW? Just HOW?

I am an average height (5 ft 4ish) and the rail was up to my chest when me and DH went on a cruise ship 3 years ago. It was like this on the attached pic.

If I am on holiday, I want to chill and enjoy it whether its 3 or 5. If I am not at home and travelling around it's all good!

Exactly, Zany! Gah, Dec., 2019, that's so long! As my dad's favourite tshirt says, 'Life's Better Cruisin'!' They were actually caught out on the Carnival Valor last year. They had sailed out of Galveston, and when in the port of Merida, Hurricane Harvey changed course. They ended up spending an entire extra week on board, with two trips to New Orleans. They had excellent service and were 2 of 1800 passengers to have remained on board the duration (some disembarked in New Orleans and the RC ship due to land at Galveston diverted to Florida).

I see a Disney ship fairly often docked in harbour near us - it's an amazing vessel. I have no real desire to go on a cruise, but I'd love to try the water flume on the top deck that goes inside and outside Grin

LeftRightCentre · 21/08/2018 23:55

Ooo, where are you, Olenna? The Disney Fantasy was docked next to us in Nassau, and my daughter stopped to take photos of it. The MSC Davina was in port with us in Grand Cayman a couple of years ago and I got to use my French, so many of the passengers were French-speaking. So many ships, such little time!

toomanychilder · 21/08/2018 23:56

A friend of mine is an entertainer on the Disney fantasy.

OlennasWimple · 22/08/2018 00:19

Not in the UK LeftRight Wink

I've just checked, and it is the Fantasy that we see here.

Thank you puzzledandpissedoff! I wonder why Fred Olson doesn't insist on a passport when everyone else does... Curious. Anyhoo, thanks for answering!

After reading this thread I did some vicarious cruising last night and watched Cruising with Jane MacDonald Grin .
We've done cruises with and without drinks packages and also with all inclusive. This for four adults (DC over 18). The drinks package was the most expensive option and also very annoying as you could have A but not B and so you end up buying what you want on top.
I haven't been on a cruise lately as I have a health condition and not sure about on board health facilities.
DH wants to do a river cruise but I keep telling him you have to be 90....

ZanyMobster · 22/08/2018 11:42

Hoozz- from what I gather the health facilities on board are excellent.

Kewcumber · 22/08/2018 13:08

on board health facilities are excellent but expensive.

One of our table mates at dinner had cancer and her insurance cost her as much as the cruise!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/08/2018 13:18

About the drinks packages, in case it helps ... the posters on cruise forums I'm on reckon you need at least 6-7 drinks a day to break even on the cost, and of course you have to factor in port days when you're not on the ship to drink!!

P&O's "up to $7 a drink" sounds a bit low to me (though I gather their prices are cheaper anyway?). IME Celebrity are worth a look, as many cruises at the moment are being sold with drinks (and internet) included, and the limit of $11 buys you most stuff except the more expensive cocktails and specialist martinis

HIC Wink

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/08/2018 13:34

@LeftRightCentre I had to smile about your friends staying on the ship for an extra week ... some of mine were stuck on Cuba when Irma went through, and were evacuated to an hotel up in the mountains

Turns out it was the best holiday they ever had, with the hotel turned into "party central", the rum punch flowing without limit and absolutely everyone mucking in together Grin

ZanyMobster · 22/08/2018 13:40

Yeah P&O drinks are pretty cheap, most under £7 definitely but I think some cocktails are over (and I wonder if they all will be with the new packages?) also the 'flights' are £7-9 each so would be extra.

I saw a mini cruise advertised on celebrity for £299 including drinks, amazing deal!

Hoozz · 22/08/2018 13:41

6-7 drinks a day isn't huge when it includes soft drinks.
Kewcumber Yes my health insurance is expensive. We had to use the med centre once when DS had an injury which very efficient.

LeftRightCentre · 22/08/2018 13:59

With drinks packages, some lines make it so that if one passenger gets one, all other passengers in that room have to.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 22/08/2018 14:09

I saw a report that she jumped off ship. She must have been terrified.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/08/2018 14:11

It certainly is, but unless they bar all stag and hen groups and the like, I wouldn't want to say what the atmosphere on that could be like Hmm

IME it's bad enough when they have large conference groups, barring access to lounges, etc, to everyone else, but at least those don't tend to feature mass shrieking, dildos and inflatable willies (at least, not in the public areas Wink)

paap1975 · 22/08/2018 14:12

As someone who has managed to have not one, but two life threatening allergic reactions on a cruise ship, I can tell you that the onboard medical facilities are very good, as are the staff.

ZanyMobster · 22/08/2018 14:22

Grin yeah not sure mini cruise and AI drinks is a good fit! P&O have already banned all the blow up willies and logo tshirts etc so I suspect that other liners are similar now.

Siennamiller · 22/08/2018 14:37

My brother was on a cruise a few years ago, a couple who had met on the cruise were drunk and trying to get up to no good on a balcony, she fell in, he jumped in after her without telling anyone. Luckily the next cabin heard the splash, and alerted the captain. The captain woke up the whole ship up, they all had to put their lights on and look for the two people. Finally located them at 4am 😳😳!

SusanWalker · 22/08/2018 15:11

I really want to do a European river cruise. I will never be able to afford it but I sent off for the brochure and leaf through it, pretending I have won the lottery. Yes I do have no life.

Can I ask if you do a sea cruise do you feel seasick? I have done Plymouth to Rostock several times and usually have to take tablets. I was just wondering if a cruise ship is less likely to make you feel ill.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 22/08/2018 15:19

susan I’m badly travel sick on ferries and buses but fine on cruises. To be on the safe side go to the Caribbean it’s really flat Wink

EnglishGirlApproximately · 22/08/2018 15:20

Also, Newmarket Holidays often have Buy One get One half price on Ruver cruises, not the top end line but still lovely.

SusanWalker · 22/08/2018 15:43

Thanks for letting me know. Maybe one day I will be able to manage it. I like to plan holidays on the basis that one day I will be able to afford to go on one. I also have a holiday planned to Sorrento with a day trip to Pompeii😁. Perhaps I'll have a look at Caribbean cruises next!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/08/2018 15:48

SusanWalker on most of the big ships you can barely tell the thing's moving, but seasickness is a very individual thing. I'm not affected myself, but it's still wise to take the tablets along if a notoriously rough area's involved ... though chances are you'll never need them

And yes, even the Caribbean can cut up rough occasionally, even outside the hurricane season!!

ajandjjmum · 22/08/2018 15:56

Bay of Biscay is the shitty one - we were on a March cruise once, and ended up virtually in the States (slight exaggeration), as the Captain tried to avoid a storm, which was determined to follow us.

It was so rocky one night, my elderly Aunt got up and got dressed, as she was sure the ship was going to capsize - bless her. Grin

Shame, we missed a couple of stops in the Canary Islands - and it was like a mill pool on the way back!
