Injured hedgehog - help!

Just found an injured hedgehog in the garden, it's leg looks quite badly injured, I've taken it inside very gently and put it in a box there's no vets open this time in the morning, what can I do?
It's so upsetting and I'm trying to keep it together in front of DS. The poor poor thing

@INeedAnAero really sad news but a massive well done to you for helping him out. Without you, his suffering would have lasted much much longer. You may well get more hogs in your garden, they seem to spread the word, leave meat based cat biscuits somewhere dry with a supply of fresh water..... they follow their noses.

Op so sorry Thanks

As DS knows he wasn't coming back anyway I think I'm going to have to tell a little white lie. Don't want to break his little heart 😢

Had a very similar experience when one of my dcs were small. My little white lie was that the Vet said he would make the hedgehog better and take him to an animal sanctuary. In fact the vet said nothing could be done. DS is now 21 and still believes that's what happened as he occasionally refers to the hedgehog he helped rescue ...

I'd tell the truth. Kids are far less freaked out by death and it's a natural part of life!! It's adults who are terrified of death.
Hedgehog was badly injured and couldn't have got better so has gone to sleep forever and will not be in pain again.

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure what to do re DS. He's only 4 and we had to have our cat put to sleep last year too.
If I do tell him the truth I won't go down the 'put to sleep' line as I think it can be really confusing for small kids as he may think it'll wake up again, or indeed give him the terrors about going to sleep himself.
Oh, it's just so sad
