Experiences?

Four years ago someone I barely knew told me (out of nowhere) that I would have twins, one boy and one girl.

But surely that's mostly confirmation bias/selective memory?

About 10 years ago, a good friend and I were walking through a town centre on a bit of a road trip when I was approached by an elderly, Indian looking man who stopped me in the street, grabbed my hand and told me I would soon be married and I'd have two beautiful children. That didn't happen. In fact, I was already married when this occurred and am now divorced. The two beautiful children never materialised.

The point is, though: I would have forgotten about the incident long ago, had it not been for my friend who was also there. He's a comedian by profession and ended up using the episode as material (which was actually quite funny).

I posted earlier in the thread about my own experience with a Tarot card reader.

I think the most successful psychics are those who keep it vague.

"There's someone in your life who isn't sincere"

"An elderly relative will become ill and die within the next 3 years"

"You will have a child. He will make you proud"

OliviaStabler · 21/08/2018 08:12

I have no doubt that some are frauds and I already knew about cold readings etc but they are not evidence that some physics are not the real thing.

ATwinThing · 21/08/2018 08:13

Yes, I still think it was probably just chance and it certainly wouldn't have me visiting a psychic in the future. However as it was the only time I can recall anyone ever predicting something about my future (selective memory?) I figured it might interest the OP.

Lightsonthewater · 21/08/2018 08:29

I think we all know vague psychics rely on cold reading, confirmation bias. Others research their subjects. But none of that explains some of the very specific readings people get when the reader knows nothing of the subject in advance

BertrandRussell · 21/08/2018 08:47

There's also the scattergun approach. Loads of stuff-there are bound to be some hits. And people who go to psychics generally want them to be real. So they unconsciously "help" the psychic along- "I've got a John-an older man -I think he's saying he's your father?" "No, not my father. But I did have an uncle called John-could it be him?" "Oh yes, your uncle. Well, he says check your tyres"
And at your next MOT your tyres are worn (like many of us) and there's a spookily accurate prediction of advice from Uncle John, which you only remember when it turns out to be true.

My Mum had a reading many years ago before SM and the internet. This was a woman she didn't know and had no connection with through any other avenue.

As she was sitting there the psychic said 'I have a woman standing beside you and she is clutching her left arm'. She then described details about this lady she could not have known. The lady was my Mum's friend who had passed away from an illness that started in her left arm.

Oliversmumsarmy · 21/08/2018 08:59

I did my friends natal chart in astrology. She didn’t know her exact time of birth but judging by her personality I made a judgement that she had to have been born between 2 times. A 90 minute window out of 24 hours.
She asked her Dm the next time she saw her and I got her exact time of birth.which was as I thought in the 90 minute window.

From that I did her transits and could tell to the day when her stbexh left and she started divorce proceedings.

I also told her what date her divorce would be over. Nearly 2 years after she started divorce proceedings.

She didn’t believe me but I have stuck to that date.

She is now over a year on and because of different circumstances my date is looking more likely.

Lightsonthewater · 21/08/2018 10:40

There is also that Bert. But that’s not specific. Two separate readers have told me of a dark haired woman who is handing me a bunch of lily of the valley tied with white ribbon. That’s some coincidence?

goose1964 · 21/08/2018 10:46

Not me but my sister. After her 1st husband died she had a consultation and the psychic told her she would find love again with an old flame but when she would meet him she wouldn't be looking her best. Several months later one of her paperboys didn't show up so she had to do the round in the pouring rain. She was soaked to the skin and bumped into a man who'd been her boyfriend when she was 14. He's now her second husband.

BertrandRussell · 21/08/2018 11:08

Have any of us ever met an old flame when we thought we were looking our best?

MadMaryBoddington · 21/08/2018 21:03

Many years ago I was at a wedding with a couple of friends, and we found ourselves on a table with a guest who did palm readings. She looked at one friend’s palm and waxed lyrical about what a lovely person she was; how kind, clever, successful etc etc. I was nodding and smiling but inwardly thinking “Pfft, yes but she can be bloody irritating and argumentative”.

Second friend had a turn and was told “You are very sad about being single, you really want to be in a relationship and it is affecting you quite badly”. Poor friend got quite teary; I was thinking “Yes this is true but she really doesn’t help herself for blah blah and blah reasons!”

My turn. The woman took my palm, shook her head and said “Oh, you are so critical! Why so critical of your friends? You must try to be kinder.” Blush

Bang on. I was mortified. I have never forgotten it and have tried very hard to be a better person ever since!

BertrandRussell · 21/08/2018 22:05

You wed to work on your poker face, MadMary!

KidLorneRoll · 21/08/2018 22:17

"But none of that explains some of the very specific readings people get when the reader knows nothing of the subject in advance"

It's all explainable. These people are categorically not talking to the dead. It's as much a simple trick (or usually a combination of tricks) as sawing a person in half, but people buy into it because they want to believe in it. People claim they can do it because it makes them money.

Research. Cold reading. Leading the conversation so the person gives way more away than they intend. Confirmation bias. Scattergunning. The list goes on, and it's not hard to learn.

MadMaryBoddington · 21/08/2018 22:44

Bertrand True! Grin

Lightsonthewater · 22/08/2018 06:43

I know how easy it is to learn Lorne, I’ve been asked if I’m psychic because of my ability to read people (warm rather than cold). I’m just very perceptive, not psychic. But there have been occasions when none of the techniques you’ve listed could possibly have been used, in readings I’ve received. And I’m equally as categoric about that.

OliviaStabler · 22/08/2018 07:59

OK so explain how a psychic can describe someone's dead relative to a T and use a nickname that no one else knows about? Give specific details, as a few answers on this thread have?

Simply not possible from a cold reading.

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2018 08:11

“Simply not possible from a cold reading.”

But perfectly possible from previous research, from “scattergunning”’ from the client saying more than they thing they have, from the client retrofitting, from the client having a selective memory.....

Obviously you can say on a thread like this “This thing happened- explain that” and nobody can because they weren’t there. But there will be an explanation.

Did anyone see Dereen Brown correctly guessing what a supermodel- I think it might have been Jodie Kidd got for a childhood birthday? She was incredibly freaked out by it!

Orangefancy · 22/08/2018 08:18

My mum went to one in the 1980s and the psychic told her a very specific incident that had happened with my dad (and had actually happened). I think a lot are charlatans but some have real abilities. There’s no way the psychic could have known about this incident or guessed at it as it was so random.

Lightsonthewater · 22/08/2018 08:20

Bad example Bert. Anyone familiar with Jodie Kidd knows she’s a horse rider. It’s odd that she was freaked out by that.

MurunBuchstansagur · 22/08/2018 08:21

Astrology is also absolute bunkum Oliversarmymummy 😁

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2018 08:23

“Bad example Bert. Anyone familiar with Jodie Kidd knows she’s a horse rider. It’s odd that she was freaked out by that.”

Rather my point.Grin

KidLorneRoll · 22/08/2018 08:24

"Simply not possible from a cold reading."

Yes it is. It's amazing how much information someone can extract from someone over the course of 10 minutes, from what they say through to body language. Take that and a tendency for people to forget most of the reading and all of the misses, and given a recording of any of these so-called "impossible" readings there will be a non-woo explanation for all of it.

What do you think is more likely, that someone can actually communicate with the dead, or they can just read people very well having learning it from Psychic reading for dummies? As I say, the techniques for doing this are well known and easy to learn.

KidLorneRoll · 22/08/2018 08:27

"describe someone's dead relative to a T"

Everyone has dead relatives. You start off with a vague "I'm getting a message from...." and then you tease the details out of the person. It's not hard.

OliviaStabler · 22/08/2018 08:28

Yes there is an explanation, some psychics are genuine.
