To run out of the office and never go back?

So I have been in my new job for a couple of weeks. My first job in a big office with loads of people to get to know/make a good impression on.

There is a secure entry system onto our floor with a pass and to get out you press a switch and the door releases.

Well today I went to leave to go for my lunch, approached the door, pressed the button and.... switched off every single light in the whole floor! Turns out those two switches are very close to each other. The colleague I was with started to laugh uncontrollably as I switched the light back on, opened the door and legged it.

So aibu to die of embarrassment find a new job and assume a new identity. Surely I can't ever go back? I will now be the woman who can't tell the light switch apart from the switch with big green righting on it saying "door release".

That sounds like the kind of thing I would do! At least you have made an impression and everyone will remember you in a way that makes them smile!!

JustHereForThePooStories · 17/08/2018 18:59

Happens constantly in my office. Don’t sweat it- it’ll be forgotten in no time.

Fluffytheevil1 · 17/08/2018 19:00

I work in a ward in hospital with a key entry pad. You’d be surprised how many people think the light switch is the door release code. Smile

Ahhhh that's really not that bad, I thought we were in for another fart/shit on item of clothing/caught shagging in the boardroom type thread so hey, could be worse... Grin

Munchyseeds · 17/08/2018 19:10

Promise it will have been forgotten by Monday
Good luck with the new job

😂😂

I once was walking down a bit of school corridor thinking "we need the lights on".

I didn't register the person walking just in front of me thinking the same and doing it.

I switched them off 🤦🏼‍♀️

It was the Ht who'd switched them on in the first place - he did laugh when I suddenly cottoned on and got all flustered!

LadyB49 · 17/08/2018 19:29

Sure it's something to laugh about in a good way. Everyone will love you.

Many many years ago i was working in a College office. The headmaster was a horrible person. A tyrant who was unpleasant to teaching staff and admin alike.

On one occasion i was called into his office, can't recall why, but I do recall that he was very rude and unfair. I couldn't bear the injustice and in my frustration i threw my notebook towards him as he sat in full majesty at his desk. Never ever had I done the like of this. The notebook bounced off the wall and landed on the floor behind him. I went and picked it up, turned and flounced through the connecting door into the main office where my 6 colleagues stood agog. I was about 20 at the time and went through the day waiting to be fired. And do you know..... It never came. I've often wondered if the old bugger enjoyed seeing me not take his crap. That was 50 years ago and it still makes a good story for my grandchildren. Rock on Granny ..... they say

Tisfortired · 17/08/2018 19:31

I was sick in my desk bin on my second day and my boss cleaned it up.

That was 5 years ago and I think I've mentally blocked it out of my mind it was so horrific, it only comes back to me in fleeting thoughts now and again.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 17/08/2018 19:37

Perhaps they weren't threads then & actually happened in my office... 🤔🤣
The poo on the skirt is real-seriously, check MN Classics.

VladmirsPoutine · 17/08/2018 19:52

I once turned up for a new job hungover and still drunk. It was horrific. I often wonder how I wasn't just fired on my first day Shock

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 17/08/2018 20:00

Oh my days Vlad I've rocked up regularly hungover in my younger days & been known to have a little nap at my desk... See also my ventures into work still slightly very high from the previous nights narcotics Blush

househunthappening · 17/08/2018 20:28

The small firm I worked for got taken over by a high nationwide company. We all had new email accounts and it was the first time we were able to send 'all' emails to different groups, eg, [email protected] to email everyone in a particular office, or [email protected] to email everyone in the whole company.

It was my birthday not long after and I'd brought cakes in for everyone. I sent an email telling everyone in my office there were birthday cakes in the kitchen, but I managed to send it to the entire company which was about 1,300 people Blush

VladmirsPoutine · 17/08/2018 20:30

NoFuckingRoom I also once got totally trashed at work during lunch time and had to come back to work. I honestly don't know how I still have a career. I also once shagged my then boss. My 20s were spent out of my tree. I'm sure it was noticed but I was never pulled up on it.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 17/08/2018 20:31

Vlad I think you & I had pretty similar early careers... Wink

Alwayscommuting · 17/08/2018 21:12

Super relieved to see that I am not the only ridiculous person managing to hold down a "professional" career.

I have also done it - happens a lot in our office too.

Fatbelliedgirl · 19/08/2018 15:45

Don't worry! As the new girl in one of my previous jobs not only did I leave through a fire exit door thus setting off the alarm, but also walked into a glass door believing it to be an automatic sliding door but in fact where a wall button next to it had to be pressed to open it!

HerRoyalNotness · 19/08/2018 15:50

I did that in a church once. I wen into the vestibule and was trying to get DS to sleep but it was very bright. I switched off a switch that I assumed was for the closet we were in, but it had turned off the lights for the main hall. Someone came sprinting out and turned them back on. GrinBlush
