To think pregnant ladies should be able to use parent and child spaces?

As I get bigger and bigger everyday, I am finding it harder to get out of normal parking spaces without knocking the door and potentially scratching someone's car.

So, would you be miffed if you saw a pregnant lady (with no outside the womb children) using a parent and child space ?

(I understand you could park somewhere where a space is free next to you, but you don't know if someone is going to park there while you're gone...)

lol OP. If you’re struggling that much you’re not safe to be driving. I suspect you just want to feel special though.

PickleNeedsAFriendInReading · 16/08/2018 19:41

I think anyone with difficulty doing simple tasks should be treated well - do you mean you think pregnant people should be treated better than someone who had difficulty because they were obese, simply because pregnancy is more important somehow? Because we were all born to mothers who were pregnant, you mean? I'm not sure I follow that logic. It sounds like you mean that pregnancy is somehow special, rather than that we should treat pregnant women differently when/if/because they are finding certain tasks harder (in the same way that someone who was obese might find a task like getting out of a car harder to do). It sounds almost like you wouldn't consider someone who was obese to fall in the same category, because you think there is something morally better about being pregnant (or elderly, or disabled), even if they had the same difficulty you did in getting out of the car!!

Flyingpompom · 16/08/2018 19:42

I don't care where you park your car. And I only care a little bit about your use of the word literally.
Your sneery attitude towards obese people, however, makes you come across as a twat.
You will soon realise that you are not in any way special, millions of women have babies, many of them without special privileges.

PirateWeasel · 16/08/2018 19:44

Beats me why supermarkets dont just have decent sized spaces throughout the car park so that anyone and everyone can get in and out properly! Most carparks seem to still have spaces sized for tiny cars from the 70s.

tor8181 · 16/08/2018 19:51

i used to as i used to go enormous early in pregnancy and always massive towards the end

now(well years really)i cant get out of a car in a normal space because of my boobs(J/K cup)

i kid you not,a normal space that ha cars parked either side i just cant get through there is just no room for my top half to squeeze through the gap

its a good thing my oldest has a disability blue badge now as we use the disabled

Louiselouie0890 · 16/08/2018 19:53

Meh, Ive been 8 months pregnant getting out and getting a kid out in a normal space. It's not hard

SilverySurfer · 16/08/2018 20:01

Rachie1973
Jeez.... I expected thunderbolts and a heavenly chorus with that at the very least.

Seems reasonable if you're giving birth to the second coming Grin

Other people with chronic pains/disabilities have the ability to park in disabled spaces, but pregnant women are just expected to carry on as normal until the baby falls out?

I hope you are not seriously comparing being pregnant with being disabled because that would make you ignorant.

BlackberryandNettle · 16/08/2018 20:03

I think pregnant women are allowed to use them

BlackberryandNettle · 16/08/2018 20:06

Obese people if they are having ongoing problems getting in and out due to size I guess could get a disability badge?? Whereas for me pregnancy would fall into the category of parent and child space.

FASH84 · 16/08/2018 20:11

How short are people's arms that they can't reach the wheel?! I'm nearly six months and big bump, I've also put on a bit of non bump weight. After a similar thread the other day, I checked when I got into my car to see how much space I had because I need my car for work and was worried I'd have to stop early because MN gave me the fear. Honestly I think I could fit another large bump and a half between current bump and steering wheel and I can push the chair back a little if I want a bit more space. (Misses point of thread but intrigued by t rex people)

FASH84 · 16/08/2018 20:13

Oh I drive a tiny little car btw

LyndorCake · 16/08/2018 20:23

My favourite part of this thread is the OP explaining and describing pregnancy to people on MUMSnet

Go on, tell us more about being pregnant.

thecatsthecats · 16/08/2018 20:31

I welcome as many different kinds of people being allowed to use the spaces near the door. Keeps the rear of the carpark nice and empty for me.

AngelsAckiz · 16/08/2018 20:33

If you're with child then yes! Absolutely. I did when I was heavily preggo. Walking was painful and difficult so I was very glad to be in a space close to the shop entrance

PunkrockerGirl59 · 16/08/2018 20:35

Tell us more about being pregnant, OP because I'm on the edge of my seat. Also interested to hear more about your specialist knowledge on disability and blue badge application. You are pregnant, you don't have a disability and if you're this precious before your pfb is born then my goodness you've got a tough few years ahead of you.

Mumlovestoast · 16/08/2018 20:44

I was previously against using them whilst pregnant, but a few weeks ago I hobbled past those spaces, on crutches, in agony with SPD, trying to push a trolley and heavily pregnant with twins (across to the far end of the car park so I stood a better chance of nobody parking next to me because I have no way of getting into my car if they do) when I saw two sports cars, no baby seats and both driven by men with no children with them.
Now I think screw this, and park in a parent and child space.

Ihatemycar · 16/08/2018 20:45

I had to I was the size of a double decker. No car was safe next to mine. I only used them in the last 6 weeks or so.
Nobody ever said anything thankfully 😅

GreenMeerkat · 16/08/2018 21:39

I use them when pregnant. I got sick of having to climb over the passenger seat and once through the boot (I kid you not!), to fit in the car cause some dickhead parked to close for me to fit in.

GreenMeerkat · 16/08/2018 21:43

@FASH84 it's not the length of my arms so much as my legs that become an issue for me driving while pregnant. I am a wee 5ft 1 so have to have the seat close to the wheel in order to reach the peddles. In my old car, in order to fit my bump in I had to move the seat back, and therefore could no longer reach the peddles (could still reach the wheel though). I'm fine in the car I'm in now so I think it depends on the make/model too.

WooYa · 16/08/2018 21:49

I used them quite often because I was a whale and couldn't get in or out of my car without some serious manoeuvring Smile I parked at the far end of a car park once and had to wait for 20 minutes for a knobhead car owner to come back so I could get in my car Angry

BlueBug45 · 16/08/2018 21:58

@PirateWeasel I've been choosing the supermarkets I use due to their parking space size. Sainsburys - but not the one nearest to me - comes out very well. Likewise I visit a Lidl and an Asda with reasonable sized parking spaces. Though with the latter two I have two be slightly careful where I park e.g. at the back of the supermarket.

auditqueen · 16/08/2018 22:21

People don't resent pregnant women using those spaces.
What people resent is the assumption that you are doing something that millions of women have done throughout history and making such a big deal about it.

StatisticallyChallenged · 16/08/2018 22:23

Massive bump and chronic spd here, I've no qualms about using them tbh. And it's not my first baby so I understand the need for them with small kids. But my spd means that side stepping or clambering into the car is absolutely agony and not always possible. I need to be able to sit on the seat and swivel in with my legs together, which means the door needs to be close to fully open. I also can't walk far at all.

longwayoff · 16/08/2018 22:33

Of course you should use them if pregnant, fat or not. No reasonable person would argue with that.
