Title based on what a college professor used to tell us when the going got tough.

"Just remember when you're standing shoulder deep in horse shit, there's a pony in there somewhere. So just keep digging".

'Trump did not answer questions on Cohen and Manafort from reporters as he boarded AF1 en route to WV rally per WH pool.'

5 tax fraud
2 bank fraud
1 failure to declare foreign asset (I think, trying to type and listen)

Per a legal expert, he's looking at 240 years.

Does a mistrial mean they can re-try those charges?

AcrossthePond55 · 21/08/2018 21:44

at a possible 240 years.

AcrossthePond55 · 21/08/2018 21:45

They have that option, unless the judge bars it or dismisses the charges.

What does a mistrial mean?
Do those counts get heard again?

PS. Gratitude as ever from a lurker.

Gumpendorf · 21/08/2018 21:47

As a legal matter, this is a complete and total defeat for Manafort. He will get the same sentence that he would have received if he was convicted on all 18 counts.

The number of counts of conviction doesn’t impact federal sentencing.

Cohen states in court that he acted at the direction of the candidate in order to influence the election.

In this case, 'mistrial' means, I 'think', simply that they couldn't reach a verdict. Up to the courts whether they have another go - I'd guess not. (Again, this is I 'think'.)

I'm trying so hard not to get super excited about Cohen. I'm so afraid the GOP in Congress is going to just pull long faces and say 'such false friends the Pres has!'.

If Congress takes no action, we're still dead in the water.

'Nbc now reporting that Cohen plea says Trump was directly coordinating with Cohen for these illegal payments. Wow.'

AcrossthePond55 · 21/08/2018 22:04

You're welcome Frendo. I did my best. It was coming from both camps (Manafort and Cohen) at the same time!!!

I can't wait for Rachel tonight.

This is just SUPER. But it still means bubkes unless Congress acts, and at this point, that means acts to protect the Mueller Investigation. They aren't going to instigate impeachment just on Cohen's statements, I don't think. But if Mueller can come up with corroboration.......

How will it affect voting in November, though?

lionheart · 21/08/2018 22:10

Hello Perma.

Trumpies are saying this is nothing to do with Russian 'collusion' so it's a win for them.

Lweji · 21/08/2018 22:12

How will it affect voting in November, though?

Not a lot, I expect. It will soon be forgotten unless momentum can be kept. Remember the ups and downs of the Presidential campaign? I suspect they will pull out some rabbits out of the hat at the last minute. Straight from the Kremlin, possibly.

'If Trump is not charged, the documents will not name him. It is DOJ policy not to name uncharged people. He would be referred to as something like "Person A".

What will be most revealing is what the charging documents say, if anything, about Trump's involvement in the offense.'
