To think hot tubs in back gardens are a bit shit and anti social?

I'm sure they're nice and realxing and perfectly acceptable if you live a house with a huge garden and no close neighbours nearby, but my neighbours have just bought one. We live in a row of terraces, with small gardens and are overlooked from every direction. It's slap bag in the middle of the back yard and I can actually see them sitting in it if I go upstairs.

All weekend Ive heard the constant hum from the pumps and the stench of chlorine filling the air. Now they're sitting in, shouting like they're deaf because they can't hear themselves talking over the pump.

If I'm honest I also find them a bit tacky. I can't think of anything worse. Just have a sodding bath! DB's next door neighbours have and he's been moaning about it for ages, thought he was being a killjoy until one was installed here! Now I get it.

I love the smell of chlorine, I hope my new neighbours bring one with them so I can sniff it.

LaurieMarlow · 15/08/2018 21:30

I'd love one and I'm vair posh Grin

The many snarky commenters obviously don't realise that their comments about hygiene (if true, which shouldn't normally be the case - filters, purifiers, anyone?) would apply at least as much to swimming pools.
Actually more so, as there are generally more people in a pool ...

HoleyCoMoley · 15/08/2018 21:34

I think it's because of the water temperature too, I'd never go in a hot tub, you never know what germs are in there.

CherryPavlova · 15/08/2018 21:34

My husband would have a heart attack if I suggested being ‘active’ in the tub. He’s neurotic about the maintenance and balance of the chemicals such that I’d call it his hobby. The children wouldn’t do anything other than talk in it either.
We could do blankets or light the Kadai but we like the gently bubbling water. In fact, we like water per se and even like the sea in December. Blankets get damp and floating is definitely more relaxing than huddling. No neon glasses or straws but we do have underwater coloured lights and a floating ice bucket.

As an aside, one of my favourite memories ever was a hot tug (not tub) around Copenhagen harbour. A wood fired hot tub with outboard set to 38/40 degrees gently bubbling as we pottered around the opera house at night with champagne and snacks. Great fun and lovely to climb back in after we’d jumped in the sea (13 degrees).

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 15/08/2018 21:34

I'm fairly sure it's too cold where I live and for most of the year you'd risk losing body parts to the cold (I s'pose a sea survival suit would save you, but also defeat the purpose somewhat!). That's before you consider passing sheep or cows having a drink, next door's ducks popping round for a paddle etc.

If my neighbours had one I wouldn't care, but there is a field and a half between our houses, I would care very much if they were closer!

KERALA1 · 15/08/2018 21:36

I am rather precious about ours dds have to shower before using it and it is kept sparkling. Reading the Sunday paper in the hot tub is my guilty pleasure Wink

chillpizza · 15/08/2018 21:38

We love ours. Water tested everyday, no loud music and sex parties though. Sit in it of an evening once the children are fast asleep with a nice glass of cold wine watching the stars.

Couldn’t care less what the neighbours think to be honest I hear more than I would like to coming from their house and garden and that’s before the children start opening their mouths.

mrjoepike · 15/08/2018 21:39

we love ours on the river and we use a combo of bromine and salt sanatation.keeps my arthritic body up and moving.best thing i ever did and have a canopy for bad weather.

HowManyGenerations · 15/08/2018 21:43

I like the sound of a relaxing hot tub.

Oldraver · 15/08/2018 21:46

My neighbours have plonked one right next to the fence...nearer to our house than theirs...and it's bloody noisy. It hums when it's switched on and is quite annoying

secre · 15/08/2018 21:46

Eeeeew. You do realise that chlorine is odourless.
The 'chlorine' smell is created by chloramines, which only build up when the pool water is improperly treated. Chloramines result from the combination of two ingredients: (a) chlorine disinfectants and (b) perspiration, oils and urine. Your neighbours are likely pissing in their hot tub!!! Gross.

TomHardysNextWife · 15/08/2018 21:46

Sex pond Grin Grin

You lot have made my day.

Flamingo84 · 15/08/2018 21:49

I love mine! Nothing better than relaxing in the evening and catching up on the day with DH without the TV or gadgets distracting us. When you can sit under the stars and enjoy the quiet and just relax for an hour, it’s bliss.

I have chronic pain and nerve issues and it’s great for keeping my muscles relaxed.

No sex for DH in there though! We don’t have any overlooking neighbours but I still wouldn’t want to chance it!

As for the cleanliness, like anything in your home, you have to clean it and look after it. Didn’t realise that was a difficult concept for some?!

IMO decking and the fake grass trend are way worse than a hot tub.

ChikiTIKI · 15/08/2018 21:51

My neighbours have one and I didn't realise until reading your post that it's probably the pump noise that makes them talk so loud...

Why would you want to have a bath outside with your family and friends and then still have to have a shower afterwards to get the chlorine off? I think it's odd and tacky.

WhyDoesItAlways · 15/08/2018 21:52

We have one although I view it as not so much a hot tub, more a glorified paddling pool. It has kept my toddler very entertained this summer.

The bubbles only go on for a few minutes though because I can't stand the noise either!

thecatsarecrazy · 15/08/2018 21:52

My mil has just got 1. Don't get it either. Her garden isn't that big. No thanks. Would rather have a nice hot bath

notapizzaeater · 15/08/2018 21:54

We've one, never considered having sex in it though. It's for aching bones !

PiggyPlumPie · 15/08/2018 21:55

Our NDN have got one. Doesn't normally bother me but was woken up at midnight by kids squealing. It had been quiet when I went to bed at 11. They did quieten down when I slammed the bedroom window shut.

At least I hope it was kids and not them having sex. Envy not envy!

Gardenpicnic · 15/08/2018 21:55

Wow mrjoepike your hot tub is all over Google...

Hmm
Tw1nsetAndPearls · 15/08/2018 21:57

I would love a hot tub, I am dead common though

howardmoonseyebrow · 15/08/2018 21:57

Mmm hot pube soup. I’m not seeing the appeal of the hot tub , glad my neighbours haven’t got one!

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 15/08/2018 21:59

Lol mrjoepike that reminds me of the Mner who posted a hotel bedroom and claimed it was her own.

mrjoepike · 15/08/2018 22:01
