To report someone I know is driving with no license?

NC as possibly outing and going to try and keep details to a minimum for same reason.

I work with someone who is epileptic so has to renew their license every 12 months, the job we do involves driving big vans. He never told us he was epileptic when he joined we have only just found out due to him having no license atm (long story but basically he was boasting to another employee who told the boss) Boss is very cross and obviously not letting him drive the vans but the person leaves in a fortnight so we are happy to leave it there wrt work. The person also works in a bar at weekends.

Work found this out on Friday and today is my first day back in (been ill) so I have only found out today. He has driven his car to and from work everyday since Friday (and before) and his license actually ran out mid July. He says he has a GP appointment in September to have a medical to get his license back but I have absolutely no idea what this involves/how long it takes between seeing GP and having license back.

The person also often drinks after work (2or3 pints) and then drives home. Having recently had a car written off by an unlicensed uninsured driver and losing just over £2000 from the whole thing, this has touched a nerve with me and I don't think they should be driving. I also don't like the person very much so this could be clouding my judgement.

So WIBU to report them for driving with no license or should I just let it go because he can drive and did have a license he just seems to be being lax about getting it renewed.

If, very likely when, he causes causes an accident, how will you feel about it, knowing you could have prevented it? Will you be able to look the victims family in the eye?

DGRossetti · 15/08/2018 15:26

I don't know if we've established if the car is insured have we?

In theory, all cars on the road should be covered by a policy. If they are not, an offence is being committed.

ownvehicle.askmid.com/

can tell you if the car is insured. I know the warnings look scary, but I'd say the OP has a valid reason to inquire.

DGRossetti · 15/08/2018 15:27

The insurance is void if he doesn't have a licence.

Not for for injury/damage to 3rd parties.

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 15:30

of course, but I would argue that people prepared to drive without a valid licence, are quite likely to be prepared to drive an uninsured vehicle too.
Definitely should be reported. These people cost us all, and if he's drinking and driving too, put people at risk.
Driving a van too - so more than usual mileage and with heavier loads. Very bad indeed.

HoleyCoMoley · 15/08/2018 15:30

The insurance would be the least of my concerns. He is uninsured, doesnt have a valid license, shouldn't be driving, drinks alcohol before driving and could have seizures, he could kill himself and others. He needs to be reported today to the police and DVLA.

PotteryLady · 15/08/2018 15:31

Definitely!!!

WhoWants2Know · 15/08/2018 15:31

If the driver has no license, any insurance on the car would be invalid

Smashcam · 15/08/2018 15:33

Boss hasn't fired him as he is leaving anyway in two weeks. As far as I know he always had insurance but can't say for definate if he does or doesn't. Car is taxed and MOTd because I can check that. mummabubs what you said really hit home, I would feel terrible if something happened and I hadn't taken action so I think there's my answer.

No, 3rd party insurance still stands.

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 15:39

That's not accurate.

namechange2pointoh · 15/08/2018 15:45

Would it? Are you certain? You sound like you are staying a fact, but your actual 'fact' is incorrect.

DGRossetti · 15/08/2018 15:50

Have they cancelled the cheque ?

nonevernotever · 15/08/2018 16:06

IMO you have to report. Look at the Glasgow bin lorry crash and how many families were destroyed as a result.

sulflower · 15/08/2018 16:09

The person also often drinks after work (2or3 pints) and then drives home.

This alone is enough for me to report him.

sulflower · 15/08/2018 16:12

Apparently driving without a licence voids your insurance

Bluelonerose · 15/08/2018 16:19

Yes report there's enough idiots on the road WITH licenses yes you Audi driver who nearly drove into the side of me yesterday coz you were on your phone never mind those who haven't.

JeSuisPrest · 15/08/2018 16:26

Anyone injured or who suffers a loss caused by an uninsured driver can claim from the Motor Insurers Bureau - www.mib.org.uk

All insured drivers pay into this scheme (approx £30 of your annual premium). Report him for any or all of the reasons he shouldn't be driving - no licence, no insurance, drinking. He's an accident waiting to happen.

DGRossetti · 15/08/2018 16:27

Have you cancelled the cheque ?

YesThisIsMe · 15/08/2018 17:51

Insurance can be void if you’re driving unlicensed (or if you’re drunk driving or fronting or have lied about something else important on the application). However anyone you injure will receive the same compensation as they otherwise would, either from the carrier of the invalid insurance or from the MIB. If your insurer pays comensation on your behalf to a third party then the insurer could sue you to recover the costs, up to and including bankrupting you and taking your home.

So if he hits someone, the victim won’t lose out financially, but he could lose everything, and more importantly he sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I’d definitely report him.

RedneckStumpy · 15/08/2018 19:32

It’s not something that I would get involved in.

Not my circus, not my clowns

Sad how sad.

AromaticSpices · 15/08/2018 19:37

Of course you report. ConfusedHmm

Santaclarita · 15/08/2018 19:39

So he has no licence, is epileptic, drink drives, and you're wondering if you should report him?

Of course you should. He deserves a nice chat with the police to explain why he's a twat who doesn't care about potentially killing people.

Ethylred · 15/08/2018 19:43

Do this. You will be doing the right thing.

mummabubs · 18/08/2018 07:35

Didn't mean to scare you OP, I've been in a position at work where I had to report things related to patient-safety so I guess I know how it feels to have to do the right thing even when it feels awkward. X
