To think this shouldn't be allowed?

Bloke in town with a microphone, yelling about how Jesus is the only way to heaven. Gays are sinners, other religions are sinners, we must repent blah blah blah.

Bad enough, but then he starts making eye contact with the only hijab wearing woman around and loudly proclaims that Only Christians Can Go To Heaven And All Other Religions Lead To Eternal Damnation - presumably as she's an easy target.

AIBU to think that's not right and that he shouldn't be allowed to wander around town yelling shit like that?

Blanche, I haven't made a passive aggressive dig. I am calmly stating my point of view in the face of outright aggression and insults from you.

I commented what could constitute a hate crime- fact- and you said there was no such thing
No I didn't say there was no such thing as a hate crime. I have clearly and repeatedly questioned YOUR interpretation of what constitutes a hate crime. As you genuinely don't appear to understand that written law is interpreted through case law, I explained why this was important. I am absolutely sure that the examples we are talking about have not been tested through case law, and explained why I think they are not covered by case law. You insist on repeatedly stating your opinion of what the law states as a hate crime (based on a very specific example in the OP) as a fact. Facts do not become facts because you keep saying they are. You need to provide evidence for them. Yes this is just AIBU, but that does not justify you in being aggressive and insulting to people who do not want to accept your assertion/ opinion as fact when you can't justify it. That shouldn't antagonise you.

it offends your belief that you can say what you like in the name of religion I don't have this belief and have never stated that I do. I have clearly stated that I have a different view from you of where the line should be drawn. As I have also stated, I also think that it is a better approach to challenge beliefs one finds offensive, such as that homosexuality is a sin, through debate and particularly debate within faith communities, than simply silencing people from speaking. That is a difference of opinion on how to reach the same end.

Linking your argument to the sickening culture of child sex grooming along the way. I don't think there is much disagreement around the fact that one of the factors why the child sex grooming went on so long (it was happening in my school in the Midlands in the 1980's) was because people did not want to be seen as racist. Hell, Jeremy Corbyn sacked one of his shadow cabinet ministers recently for speaking out on this because he did not want his party to be seen as racist. Thereby completely failing to learn the lesson that people need to be able to speak their child protection (or other vulnerable groups) concerns without facing serious repercussion for being seen as 'racist'. So yes, I'll state it again, seeking to silence people or punish people, or displaying the attitude you have displayed to me of becoming aggression and insulting to someone for having a different opinion from you, rather than listening and engaging in reasonable discussion, all comes from, and feeds into, a cultural atmosphere where people are hindered from discussing their legitimate concerns about vulnerable people. Or they express concerns and they are shouted down and insulted, as hateful, or phobic. That is why I am arguing it is really important to listen to people, engage and discuss, rather than silence and insult.

Freedom of speech is far more important than any so called offense and I support the right of people to spout their religious beliefs, even though it is complete bollocks. Society will cease to Progress If We End up with a government approved List of things we can say. By the way, please stick your biscuit where the sun never shines Hmm
