To be considering A&E?

DH just come home from playing golf with a friend and he said his foot just started hurting half way round, he carried on and now it's unbearable. He's not one to complain and has a high pain threshold but he's in agony. He can't walk, putting any pressure on it makes him nearly throw up in pain. He says can't do A&E as he hasn't injured himself so it isn't an emergency. Doesn't look swollen or red but veins are quite protruded. Any ideas? I just want to take him to the hospital. Never seen him like this. Posting here for traffic really sorry

Call 111 and see what they say.

Aveenobrazeeno · 14/08/2018 21:16

I would head to a minor injuries unit tomorrow morning if you don't have to work.

Quibbled · 14/08/2018 21:18

Which part of his foot? Possibly torn achilles tendon if pain is back of heel and calf area swollen. Possibly gout? DP gts excruciating attacks of gout in one foot. It comes on quite suddenly and after a day he gets a noticeably red toe joint.

Foodylicious · 14/08/2018 21:19

Just call 111 and follow their advice
Hope he gets relief soon

NaughtyNoraTheNamechanger · 14/08/2018 21:20

Call 111, they should be able to advise.

strawberrypenguin · 14/08/2018 21:21

A&E is appropriate for sudden onset acute pain. I'd take him

maddiie · 14/08/2018 21:23

He's so stubborn he won't speak to 111. Can I call on his behalf? Men and their bloody pride. He's nearly in tears and won't ever ask for help.

111 are useless if you can avoid them, do. It sounds like you need a minor injuries unit. Do you have one locally?

BorahT · 14/08/2018 21:29

If the pain is mid foot then it could be a stress fracture (happens with people who walk a lot so not necessarily an obvious injury occurring with it) so is pretty reasonable for a trip to A&e, but if he won’t go encourage him to get to the GP who would hopefully refer him for an X-ray if they felt it was appropriate.

mando12345 · 14/08/2018 21:30

I'd call 111, I've found them very good.

britnay · 14/08/2018 21:32

our local minor injuries prefer you to ring 111 first to make an appointment...

Thirtyrock39 · 14/08/2018 21:33

Our local walk in centre doesn't have X-ray facilities in the evening - I've been before when I was in agony with a broken finger and was sent on to a & e so I'd go direct to there

SeaToSki · 14/08/2018 21:34

How is the temp of the paiful area compared to his other leg at a similar spot?

Can he wiggle his toes (all be it painful, but does he have physical control over them)

Can he feel it if you touch his toes / heel / instep gently

If its overly hot or he has lost physical control or sensation, straight to A and E.

Otherwise try ice packs for 20 mins and then a hot bath, he could be in a muscle spasm. Max dose ibuprofen and lots of water. If its not better in the morning then an emergency GP appointment

Merryoldgoat · 14/08/2018 21:35

I’d avoid 111 at all costs. It’s one of the most useless services known to man.

If he’s in acute pain and can’t bear weight he needs to see someone. I’d be tempted to wait for GP or minor injuries tomorrow but if it’s a clot it needs urgent attention in A&E.

Merryoldgoat · 14/08/2018 21:37

If he won’t see help or advice then tell him to shut up and get on with stuff. I have no patience for people who refuse to get assistance or advice when they obviously need it.

keyboardkate · 14/08/2018 21:37

Why are you concerned about someone who just will not do anything and is a martyr to pain and discomfort?

I get that you are worried, but you have to stand back if the injured person will not do anything.

THEsonofaBITCH · 14/08/2018 21:41

You can call and describe symptoms. If its as bad as described could be a blood clot and if it lets loose could cause heart attack

MycatsaPirate · 14/08/2018 21:43

My dp is the same. Rarely in pain, very high pain threshold and would rather cut off his own limb than 'make a fuss' by seeking help.

But point out that he is going absolutely nowhere any time soon unless he gets it looked at.

Haworthia · 14/08/2018 21:44

Of course he should go to A&E if he’s in such agonising pain.

RedPanda2 · 14/08/2018 21:52

If you call 111 they will need to speak to him. He should grow up and not expect his wife to organise this for him.

AlbertaSimmons · 14/08/2018 21:53

Agree with MerryOldGoat - he's a grown adult and can make his own decisions about his health. If he refuses to get help, then he forfeits the right to complain.

CoolCarrie · 14/08/2018 21:54

Go to A & E. It’s a Tuesday night, not a Saturday so it shouldn’t be busy. He probably won’t sleep well and neither will you if he is in pain. Just take him.

TrickyD · 14/08/2018 21:54

Don't knock 111. DH rang then when he was concerned about me; they sent an ambulance immediately, siren and blue lights to hospital, pacemaker fitted next morning. Life saved.

Silvercatowner · 14/08/2018 21:55

He probably won’t sleep well and neither will you if he is in pain

I suspect I'd be in the spare room/on the sofa if I was OP.

Grumpbum123 · 14/08/2018 21:57

111 are excellent and have saved my life twice, irrespective he needs to be willing to follow their advice. It’s his call really
