To be considering A&E?

DH just come home from playing golf with a friend and he said his foot just started hurting half way round, he carried on and now it's unbearable. He's not one to complain and has a high pain threshold but he's in agony. He can't walk, putting any pressure on it makes him nearly throw up in pain. He says can't do A&E as he hasn't injured himself so it isn't an emergency. Doesn't look swollen or red but veins are quite protruded. Any ideas? I just want to take him to the hospital. Never seen him like this. Posting here for traffic really sorry

Agree with MerryOldGoat - he's a grown adult and can make his own decisions about his health.

None of the men I'm close to can be trusted to make decisions about their health. 🙈

flumpybear · 14/08/2018 22:00

111
Briefly though, does he or his foot feel hot? Are his toes cold? Or white?
But I'm no doctor so honestly if ohone 111

Shambu · 14/08/2018 22:01

I'd be concerned it might be a blood clot too. I'd be inclined just to take him if he'll go. You can faff around for a long time on 111. And if they advise you to go you've just wasted time. They may not be that busy, many people are away.

I wouldn't ice it until you know what it is.

Missingstreetlife · 14/08/2018 22:02

111 were good but have gone right off, but no harm in ringing them.
Has he had painkillers? I would say this deserves a trip to a and e

Shambu · 14/08/2018 22:02

By they I meant A&E ^^

notapizzaeater · 14/08/2018 22:03

Regardless of what he wants if he's near,y being sick with the pain he needs to see a doctor.

agnurse · 14/08/2018 22:04

If he can't walk on it he needs to be seen. Could be a fracture.

TroysMammy · 14/08/2018 22:06

Has he taken pain killers? Could it be plantar fasciitis?

AnoukSpirit · 14/08/2018 22:07

Shame the woman with multiple fractures in her foot who was berated on another thread today for daring to go to A&E didn't get this chilled out, helpful response from posters.

If 111 recommend A&E will he listen? If so it'd be worth it for that.

ladydickisathingapparently · 14/08/2018 22:07

Please go to A and E. My DH broke his ring finger a few years ago and refused to go to A and E that night, despite my pleading. Funny enough it didn’t fix itself overnight and his treatment and recovery was more painful than it needed to be!

AlbertaSimmons · 14/08/2018 22:10

Shambu they absolutely can be trusted to make decisions about their health. They may not make the decisions that you or I might make, but that doesn't make their decisions invalid. For whatever reason, if they don't want medical attention or advice, or to sit in A&E half the night, then that is fair enough. But that's the end of the conversation.

Squidgee · 14/08/2018 22:18

There's every chance it could be a stress fracture, he doesn't have to have injured anything for that have happened, it could be from walking around on it (done it before myself)

He ought to get it checked over if he's in that much pain.

Oh, and I completely agree that some people can't be trusted with their own health because they'd end up with sepsis or something equally as bad before they'd get help themselves.

Italiangreyhound · 14/08/2018 22:18

111 and then go to A and E if they say so, or you feel it is right, trust your gut.

ScarlettDarling · 14/08/2018 22:20

Tell him to get checked out. Silly man, the pain is unbearable and is making him feel sick, but he won't get it checked?

My money is on gout. My husband gets it and the pain during the first day of an attack is horrendous.

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 14/08/2018 22:21

111 will tell you to go to hospital. Every single time.

Littlefish · 14/08/2018 22:23

I was wondering about gout too. My dh gets it and can't move, or even bear to have a sheet resting on it when he's in the middle of an attack.

OkMaybeNot · 14/08/2018 22:26

He needs minor injuries, it's likely to be a sprain or a torn ligament given how he came by the injury.

I've broken my ankle and badly sprained my ankle, and the pain was comparable.

Mascarponeandwine · 14/08/2018 22:28

I’ve had this. It was an insect bite that caused cellulitis by my ankle. Couldn’t stand on it. Minor injuries were confused and sent me to A&E. I can’t remember what tests they did, looking for bone infection, but a packet of antibiotics did the trick.

Bambamber · 14/08/2018 22:31

Doesn't need to be an injury to be an emergency, how does he think heart attacks happen?

If he hasn't taken pain relief, I would start with that first and give it half hour and see if he can wait until tomorrow. But if that level of pain continues I would personally get it seen to

Bambamber · 14/08/2018 22:32

*obviously I'm not implying he has had, or is going to have a heart attack. Just an example that emergencies can be without injury

Balaboosteh · 14/08/2018 22:33

I’d suggest gout.

condepetie · 14/08/2018 22:35

Let him get on with it tbh if he's being so stubborn about it that you're the one calling 111 and worrying about him.

Maybe tomorrow he'll accept that he might need some help.

Shambu · 14/08/2018 22:51

Bollocks. In my father's case that would only have been the right decision if he'd wanted to die. He didn't want to die, he was just in denial that his condition was life threatening. He nearly died. Afterwards he thanked me for saving his life.

Honeyroar · 14/08/2018 22:51

Has he done the usual things - raised it, rested it and iced it? Taken a paracetamol or anything?

I'd ring 111. I've found them great on the occasions I've rung them, but they have been absolute emergencies that would have warranted 999 calls.

TomHardysNextWife · 14/08/2018 22:52

Has he taken any pain relief? Co codamol would be good, and ibuprofen - if the pain is considerably better within an hour I'd be happy to leave it until morning. If it doesn't touch it, then go to A & E.
