To not want crazy man to spy on us at work?

I work in a small office that is open 24/7, similar to a call centre. The owner of this company is a lunatic. Some of things he likes to do include:
-shouting at the top of his lungs at members of staff while they’re taking a call
-tells staff that they cannot have time off that has been previously authorised by the manager
-threatens to close the business down at least once a week in front of staff
-tells staff that they cannot talk to each other at all at work.
He does a lot more, but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.

He has now decided to set up cameras in the office, which will then be linked to his phone. This way he can watch the staff in the office constantly. He really is a crazy man, so he will be watching a live feed ALL OF THE TIME. Apparently this cctv will also include audio, which I have heard is illegal?
Any advice on how to deal with this? I do not want to be watched constantly while I am at work by a man who will go insane if you go for a wee more than once in 10 hours! It feels like a huge invasion of privacy and I’m really not comfortable with the idea.

This is a small business, no HR, so no one can go above his head to complain. He is the owner. Any help?! I’m considering quitting over this.

Please stop working here! It sounds so awful. I can't imagine allowing someone to treat me like this...

Get a new job

MairzyDoats · 14/08/2018 19:02

Why do you stay?

SilverHairedCat · 14/08/2018 19:03

Fuck that. New job time. What kind of business is this?

SilverHairedCat · 14/08/2018 19:03

I mean, what line of business? Finance? Sales? Services?

Maelstrop · 14/08/2018 19:03

Quit!

Complain to the information Commissioners Office. They have quite specific guidelines about when and how CCTV should be used. Given that it is the owner of the company who is implementing this system your complaint will also give you whistleblower protection.

If you can't leave, then ring Acas for advice.

Service type of business. A lot of inbound calls. If the owner stayed away from the office and didn’t micro manage the actual office manager if would be a great place to work! Co workers are nice and the job pays well for what it is. It’s just this bloody owner, I really think he’s mentally unstable.
