To think this is unhygienic?

AIBU to think that my PILs decision to lay full carpets in their bathroom and kitchen is unhygienic? I’d also have thought a fire hazard in the kitchen??

I really struggle with hygiene practices in their home generally (e.g. not installing sinks in two of their three toilets, so people have to wash their hands in the kitchen if they bother at all), so not sure if I’m just making this into something it’s not? They say they like it as they like warm feet...?!

Every bathroom used to have a set like this

I had carpet in the bathroom of my first house, as my parents had carpet in their bathroom so it was what I was used to (freezing cold farmhouse).

But when my cat got fleas in the bathroom carpet it was horrendous, so I ripped it out and put lino in, now have lino in my current house too. I wouldn't have carpet in the kitchen either, but again my parents farm house did.

They are at the more stylish end of awful!
My mum had lime green, pale blue and pink ones with tassles on them too!

ForalltheSaints · 14/08/2018 21:17

Bathrooms should have mats that can be easily washed, not carpets.

reallyshouldnamechangemore · 14/08/2018 21:21

We always had carpets in the bathroom growing up, I've only just realised!

I've never heard of having one in a kitchen. That's totally crazy.

KeithLeMonde · 14/08/2018 21:24

Balls. I use pedestal mats. They get changed every couple of days and washed at 90 degrees.

Am I minging and didn't realise it?

PumpkinPie2016 · 14/08/2018 21:26

I personally don't like carpets in bathrooms - it was the first thing we changed when we move into our house!

Carpets in kitchens I have never heard ofHmm. Definitely not something I would do - some spillages in a kitchen are inevitable so the carpet would be filthy in no time.

LuluJakey1 · 14/08/2018 21:27

Carpets in kitchens and bathrooms- yuck! On the subject of men and peeing, DH insists men can not always control the direction of their pee and that sometimes it misbehaves and even goes in two directions at once! And he insists it is not just him. He does however always clean up after any 'splashes'.

LuluJakey1 · 14/08/2018 21:28

No washbasin in a loo/bathroom is even more yuck!

ILoveDolly · 14/08/2018 21:33

I'm a BIG fan of hard floors in all the high traffic downstairs areas and 'wet' areas of the house. I think carpets in the bathroom are one of the things I hate most about interior decor.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 14/08/2018 21:35

Ew it’s not for me, but it’s their house they can do what they want surely

crunchymint · 14/08/2018 21:36

Hard floors throughout are a total pain if you are not very mobile i.e. either a slipping hazard or if you have to get onto the floor to transfer to places - not very comfortable.

Remind him it's perfectly possible for a man to pee sitting down, completely avoiding the aiming issues.

@TornFromTheInside

Ansumpasty's using that 'it made a squelch' sound to cover her noises. She's fooling nobody!

traceyracer · 15/08/2018 00:37

I had carpets in my bathroom once but because of my son I had to get rid of them.

Once they get soiled the smell never goes away!

BlueJava · 15/08/2018 00:44

I find that gross - both the carpets and no sinks. But it's their house and hopefully you don't have to suffer it much.

Ohyesiam · 15/08/2018 00:46

When I was a child in the ( dreadful) 70s , we moved into a house with an avocado green suite, and a carpet that was made out of knitted brown pubes. It felt DISGUSTING on my feet.

DramaAlpaca · 15/08/2018 00:49

I'm sure it's not a popular viewpoint but I think carpets anywhere in a house are disgusting. I concede they feel nice underfoot but it's impossible to get to the base of the pile & clean them properly. It's hard floors & washable rugs all the way in my house, and it's not noisy because we have decent insulation.

We once moved into a house that had carpets in the bathrooms & the kitchen. I put up with the bathrooms for a while but the kitchen carpet was ripped up the day we moved in. Utterly grim.

Tinywhale · 15/08/2018 00:53

I grew up in the 70s with carpet in the bathroom and kitchen, it was pretty normal then I think. Wouldn't dream of it now!

However, neither are a hygiene issue unless you have crawlers, and I doubt it is a fire hazard since surely all carpets are fire retardant these days?

The lack of hand washing facilities for toilets is an issue though. In fact, I think it might even be against building regs.

avamiah · 15/08/2018 00:57

Let’s be honest here, nobody in their right mind would put a carpet in a bathroom unless it didn’t have a toilet .?

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 01:03

Plenty of people not in their right minds these days!

avamiah · 15/08/2018 01:06

TornFromTheInside,
Unfortunately your very correct.

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 01:24

We should create a new thread for 'seriously dire and tacky' things from the past!

OnlyAmy · 15/08/2018 01:32

There was carpet in my bathroom when I bought my home, 20 years ago. Ripping it up and laying tile was the first improvement made. Cleaning tile, I notice that the dust from the paper tends to filter onto the floor. Hair, from brushing in there, foot prints, etc all contribute to needing to clean tile. Would not want to try to clean carpet in there! And in a kitchen? Spills, splashes, even oil and grease that are airborne all coat surfaces. I can see the dirt on light tile, wouldn't see it building up in carpet! Yuck!

ErrolTheDragon · 15/08/2018 01:48

It used to be entirely normal for the upstairs loo to be a separate room next to the bathroom - my parents and IL's houses were both like this. Advantage - you could go to the loo if someone was in the bath, disadvantage you'd then have to wash your hands elsewhere (DM had sinks put in two of the bedrooms so it wasn't too bad).
