To think this is unhygienic?

AIBU to think that my PILs decision to lay full carpets in their bathroom and kitchen is unhygienic? I’d also have thought a fire hazard in the kitchen??

I really struggle with hygiene practices in their home generally (e.g. not installing sinks in two of their three toilets, so people have to wash their hands in the kitchen if they bother at all), so not sure if I’m just making this into something it’s not? They say they like it as they like warm feet...?!

Yes, it is. As it's their house and not yours, though, I'd say it's none of your business at all.

TrainsandDiggers · 14/08/2018 20:04

Perhaps none of my business, but as I and my children eat there I think it’s fair enough that I’m mindful of the hygiene issues.

Maybe you could suggest bath mats to them instead of the bathroom carpet. Although bathroom carpets are not all that bad. When I moved in here, there was a lovely 70s brown carpet in the bathroom Grin. My kids were small and actually it made the bathroom a lot safer as nobody would ever be slipping over in there. We have removed it now and redone the whole bathroom but it was actually quite nice to live with if your ignore the hygiene issues, which didn’t kill anyone.

The kitchen, that’s a hazard with appliances on top. Most say you shouldn’t put them on carpet. Plus cooking splashes and any spills, overall kitchen carpet is grim.

Are you planning to eat off the floor? Perfectly reasonable to be aware of hygiene issues, the cleanliness of work surfaces, cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery, and the the standards of cleaning and cooking food, but the floor covering isn't really that important surely?

Member745520 · 14/08/2018 20:13

I don't like carpets in the kitchen or the bathroom but I think many older people might be afraid of slipping up on a wet floor and that could be the reason? I have to use a walking stick most of the time, even indoors, and I know how quickly that can skid away from you on just a moment's inattention, and you risk serious injury. I just try to be extra careful although have found myself involuntary levitating and travelling at speed through the air on a couple of occasions, but that was caused by tripping rather than slipping, and is a whole 'nother story Grin

you can buy hand sanitiser so-tho not ideal perhaps.sorts the no sink thing out a bit.carpets/just NO.yuk

Lazypuppy · 14/08/2018 20:14

I've always had carpet in the bathroom and flotex flooring in the kitchen

cameltoeflappyflapflap · 14/08/2018 20:18

My ex partners mother used to have carpet in her bathroom, she used to pull it up and stick it in the washing machine to clean it.

TrainsandDiggers · 14/08/2018 20:21

A discrete hand sanitiser is a good idea. Thank you! Just wish they’d use one before cooking! 😬

Tbh - the lack of sinks and hand washing definitely bothers me more, but the carpets are just not to my taste.

Do you eat in the bathroom or off the kitchen floor? As long as whoever prepares the food ensures that their hands/work surfaces/ cutlery are clean and that the food is edible, you won't come to any harm.

Better than a car on the floor of the kitchen and a floater in the bathroom!

SophSoph92 · 14/08/2018 20:27

Ewww YANBU. Carpets on bathrooms make me squirm 😷😷 and all those little bits of food trodden into the carpet when cooking in the kitchen? 😱😱

MalloryLaurel · 14/08/2018 20:32

I like a soft carpet under foot when I get out of the bath.
But it's unhygienic. I even hate carpet downstairs as I can't wash it every other day.

thecatsabsentcojones · 14/08/2018 20:34

Anyone considering a toilet carpet should've seen what we lifted out of this house a while back, it was unholy. Piss stained and utterly vile. That's the joys of renovation.

Faceisamess · 14/08/2018 20:39

My parents have bathroom carpets and I never realised how weird it is until I moved out.

Never again!

mothertominibeasts · 14/08/2018 20:45

I grew up in a Tudor farmhouse (workings farm) that hadn't been updated and modernised in years.

We had carpet tiles in the kitchen and downstairs toilet. Downstairs toilet also didn't have a sink, so hand washing was done in the kitchen sink or bathroom upstairs.

I look back now and think yuk but no one was ever ill as a result, in fact I think having the sheep coming and going was more worrying Confused

It's certainly not something I have in my home now, it's tiles in the kitchen and bathroom

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/08/2018 20:48

My cousin still has carpet in the bathroom by choice as she likes it warm in there and recently replaced it. I was really concerned about not bleeding on the carpet. She uses pedestal mats around the base of the loo.

LighthouseSouth · 14/08/2018 20:49

My parents have bathroom and kitchen carpet, they've already had a couple of falls so I'm very glad they don't have any possible slippery surfaces to worry about, or hard floors to fall on.

They are very clean people though. It's carpet tiles in the kitchen. No outdoor shoes beyond the door.

Baffled by toilets with no sink though. Is that what they used to call a gentleman's hoohah?!

TornFromTheInside · 14/08/2018 20:53

Pedestal mats! those are what I meant earlier. My God, that's put me right off my Mueller Fruit Corner that has.

There is a special carpet for bathrooms. It's very resilient and waterproof. I know, I had to rip it out of our b'room when we moved in.

TornFromTheInside · 14/08/2018 20:59

Some loos (like under the stairs) etc that have been fitted after the house was built can struggle for space - so might not quite have room. You know - maybe having a downstairs loo for the kids etc if they get caught short. They can wash their hands in less of a hurry!

Ansumpasty · 14/08/2018 21:00

I used to babysit for a family who had a squidgy, foam toilet seat. There were rips in the plastic cover, and when you sat down, the foam would SQUELCH.

There’s nowt as queer as folk Grin

SophSoph92 · 14/08/2018 21:03

@Ansumpasty oh my god. If there was ever an argument for the 'hovering technique' 😱😱😱😱😱😷😷😷😷😷😷😷

TornFromTheInside · 14/08/2018 21:05

Ansumpasty's using that 'it made a squelch' sound to cover her noises. She's fooling nobody!
