To take dds pet rodent with us in a no pets caravan holiday?

It's a well known British holiday site.
They do have pets on site but not in the nicer caravans.
It's a small pet rodent. Cage is secure and said rodent has never gotten out.

It might smell a bit but obviously can spray and air out the room.

Yes as a pet. I don't know if it was their caravan or a hired one though. I think probably their own. It had had its scent glands removed I think. It was quite sweet really!

The reason I queried is because it says pets allowed in x, y, z accommodation and not in w accommodation but then in the remainder of the text it only mentions dogs.

Anyway obviously we just find a pet sitter or downgrade caravans. It's not an issue. I was just asking a question.

@Pissedoffneigh My parents have a similar caravan, and on their site you can choose as owner if you want to let people bring pets. My mum says no just in case you get an unruly dog, but has been flexible in letting someone bring a small dog and sometimes takes her own. I wouldn't think the site would guarantee any caravan to be allergy safe, as they have no idea if owners have brought in a pet when it wasn't rented out.

Au79 · 14/08/2018 11:33

What rodent is it? I used to show gerbils (yes, really!) and there’s is a whole community of rat, mouse, etc fanciers. I recommend googling and consider joining with your dd2 - they often have classes for young owners and it’s a good way to make contacts- also you can offer to mind someone else’s in exchange which is the best arrangement of all.

I also used to water someone’s plants in exchange for themselves coming and throwing in food and checking water once a day, for hol arrangements. Ask your neighbours.

Also some pet shops might take a lodger or local teen for pocket money, but you would have to pay. Try vets as well.

Well then you might have to hire one of the less nice caravans that still smells a bit of the last pets that were in it...take your spray with you and air out the rooms!

Saffy60 · 14/08/2018 11:35

Are you talking about a ferret? They smell even with the glands removed...are not that small and very good escape artists....

Au79 · 14/08/2018 11:35

Some people I knew going to shows sneaked several cages ful into a hotel room! Seriously if you are that allergic you are going to be housebound because Who Knows what has been in any room in the past! At least they are cleaned every day.

Saffy60 · 14/08/2018 11:37

Couldn't change post...noticed it was a skunk!!!

Pissedoffneigh · 14/08/2018 11:40

Saffie not I'm not taking a skunk!! I said there was one on site last year!!

What a lot of obnoxious self righteous replies you’re getting OP
It’s a tiny Russian hamster in a cage ... I doubt they’d have a problem and I’m sure the no pets criterion is aimed at pets likely to cause damage x

SilverBuckles · 14/08/2018 11:49

YABU.

Rats smell.

YeTalkShiteHen · 14/08/2018 11:52

Have they replied OP?

I think it’s a reasonable question to ask if it’s ambiguous (which it seems to be).

I do think allergies could be a reason they might say no though, so can you find someone to take the hamster as a back up plan just in case?

YeTalkShiteHen · 14/08/2018 11:52

SilverBuckles

  1. only if they’re not kept properly
  2. it’s a hamster
MaryPoppinsUmberellaHandle · 14/08/2018 11:56

My Mum owns a caravan, on one of the popular tourist sites and she won't have pets or smokers in the van at all, and she owns a pet. However, some owners do allow pets in their vans.

Maybe it's a similar reason, rather than what you initially thought?

Hopefully the site will get back to you soon.

BertrandRussell · 14/08/2018 11:56

We once took our guinea pigs camping. The camp wardens saw them and queried it-but we said we were fattening them up for. Last night barbecue and they let us stay Grin

StrangeLookingParasite · 14/08/2018 12:08

The place would need a deep clean afterwards.

Hardly.

Pinkvoid · 14/08/2018 12:11

If it said no smoking allowed would you take that to mean “but a couple of fags won’t harm, we can always spray some fabreeze”?

Pissedoffneigh · 14/08/2018 12:19

No Pink obviously but when it says pets but then only mentions dogs throughout the next section I don't think it's unreasonable to ask them given dogs are allowed everywhere else on site bar their brand new caravans.

As I've said my last tenancy agreement said no pets but when we asked about small pets they said they didn't mean small pets but didn't want dogs or cats.

It's Mumsnet Cathmidston so I was expecting it. Tough skin and all that.

Glad you aren’t doing it. We always pay extra for the deluxe caravans purely because dd has allergies.

FiveNightsAtMummys · 14/08/2018 12:43

Please don't, my dh & dc have allergies and this would cause dh breathing difficulties and dc intense itching and rashes. I have to spend money booking the more expensive caravans as they state no pets. I don't except that I have to pay more to ensure it's pet free, so please don't bring a pet of it says no pets. If you want to / have to bring a pet perhaps ring up and see if you can swap to a pet friendly caravan?

FiveNightsAtMummys · 14/08/2018 12:47

Sorry just seen an update...glad you've decided not to take the pet unless you can swap to a pet friendly. You clearly are a decent person to of asked in the first place, I imagine alot of people wouldn't bother or care. Thank you :)

Flowerylampshade · 14/08/2018 13:02

I have severe allergies and would cause probs for me but I think there's a nice way to explain it to op who hadn't considered that rather that piling on and shouting when she's just asked a question. If she ignored everyone and said she was doing it anyway then maybe but she clearly hadn't thought of that.

I'm sure a local teen might want to earn a wee bit of cash and some chocs for looking after it op?

Saffy60 · 14/08/2018 13:07

OP I know your...not thinking of taking a skunk...I was saying I had seen the explanation re - the skunk etc...

It is so difficult with messaging sometimes......

As others have said if the site agree that you can take a hamster...well there is no problem. Cleaned out daily they don't smell.
