to think leaving your tat in the woods isn't 'magical'?

Looking at some of these 'fairy doors' - they're not even good! I've seen beautiful ones hidden away before, and actually quite liked them, but this is just leaving your kids toys in the woods, surely?

Or am I a mean old lady? Grin

My neighbour is seriously into fairies (although, of course, she’d spell it faeries). Even before she had a girl child. Now it’s ramped up to unprecedented levels.

Luckily, she lives in the countryside, with a big garden. Everything must be beribboned or decorated, certainly every tree has its fairy inhabitants. But she is adamant about no plastic. She crafts things herself out of twigs, shells, pods, etc. Far more beautiful and creative than store bought tat. She also buys from Etsy- there are some makers of fairy door accessories on there that you wouldn’t believe. Wee bridges, teeny woven things, mini lanterns and postboxes. All natural, biodegradable and truly lovely!

I even made her a tiny broom from a twig, some straw and an inch of twine! She was a bit Hmm at the fact I used glue, but generally appreciated the effort.

If you can decorate the forest using what’s naturally there, I say go for it! It’s a great way to get kids interested in conservation, being outdoors, using imagination and a host of good things.

By the way, you can easily introduce colour by painting (dead leaves, pods, twigs, straw) with watercolours. Just steer clear of toxic pigments (principally ones with cobalt and cadmium in the name). You might have to spend a bit more than ‘craft paints’ prices for proper watercolour, but you don’t want to poison the lil critters!

These fairy doors and magical places are a way of claiming back the space in a small way.

How? There is no way on earth that they would deter paedophiles, rather the reverse if anything, and it just means that you spoil the space for other people. If you need to "claim back space" by doing something that harms animals, you're definitely doing it wrong.

Weepingangels · 14/08/2018 08:12

Thats not my cup of tea, very tacky. A couple of the local groups here do the stones which kids love and make little wooden fairy doors. You can donate if you want or buy a custom door and they will put it up. Everything goes to cleaning the village up.

gower4 · 14/08/2018 08:13

Everything is made up from chemicals. I'm genuinely interested in a precise answer. We found a stone painted with watercolour and varnish on top. How long would this take to break down and how damaging is it really?

Weepingangels · 14/08/2018 08:14

And the idea of deterring sex offenders is ludicrous since they target where kids would be and a fast googling shows the devastation plastic can have on wildlife.

Guienne · 14/08/2018 08:15

I don't even like the use of natural cloth ribbons to decorate trees. It's not as if they need the decoration, and inevitably the ribbons get dirty and tattered and end up looking hideous.

FairNotFair · 14/08/2018 08:26

YANBU.

In the woods, you want twigs WITHOUT glittery shit.

BarbarianMum · 14/08/2018 08:27

We encourage building fairy dens in parts of our woods (the bit near the entrance in reach of little legs). The first rule of building fairy dens, as every small child should know, is that fairies will only live in natural structures made out of moss, sticks, stones etc. Plastic is poisonous to them - so none can be near the dens and you can't leave any litter. (The plastic in your clothing is also why you won't see any fairies when you're in the woods).

For those who don't like whimsy we have another 160 ha to walk in (please pick up after your shitting beast dog).

CantankerousCamel · 14/08/2018 08:30

Lots of people don’t use watercolours though. They use sharpies and Poundland yacht varnish.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2018 08:31

I rather like nature being natural.

MrsBlaidd · 14/08/2018 08:33

My children create homes when we go for woodland walks, but it's using sticks/stones/leaves/acorns etc that they inevitable gather on their walk around.

Towards the end of the walk they'll find a suitable tree and arrange their natural treasures to make it look like it's a home for a squirrel/mouse/fox/badger.

It baffles me that someone would find plastic tat more magical than doing something like this that is just moving bits of nature to a more concentrated place before being dispersed again by the elements.

I'm glad Pembrokshire council are taking a dim view of plastic tat. It's a gorgeous part of Wales that needs absolutely no enhancement but a massive amount of protection from selfish people conservation. It's sad that some of the people living there are blind to the wonder on their doorstep.

MrsBlaidd · 14/08/2018 08:33

Inevitable should read inevitably...sorry!

BarbarianMum · 14/08/2018 08:36

I rather like nature being natural.

Me too. I'd also love it to be dog free. The reality is, we all have to give a little bit.

RenterNomad · 14/08/2018 08:41

My DD does this at home. I keep finding plastic ammunition dumps of her STUFF, everywhere! At least it's only getting on my nerves and not killing fairies! Smile Grin

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 14/08/2018 08:41

Claiming back space, what rubbish.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2018 08:53

I have no problem with kids building forts in woodland, decorating areas with twigs and what not but plastic and paint does not belong in woodlands. We don't need to plasticify the whole planet.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 14/08/2018 08:54

The sort of people who claim that anyone complaining about plastic “fairy” shit is miserable, are exactly the sort of people who cause the problem. Oh, but wait! Animals don’t get harmed by plastic apparently. Despite, you know, evidence to the contrary. And, of course, nature needs plastic and glitter to make it look nicer.

See also: people who think releasing balloons and lanterns is perfectly acceptable.

If you genuinely can’t see a problem with any of this, please stay away from the countryside.

herecomesthsun · 14/08/2018 09:00

All that is needed is a little message from the fairies
"Dear people and children,
Thank you for your kind thoughts. We have spirited away the fairy doors and spinny flowers. Please think of us and pick up any rubbish you you see, as that makes us very happy.
Love the fairies xx"

CurcubitaPepo · 14/08/2018 09:01

Our local park has this. It’s been done by a local artist, along with other items of driftwood sculpture and it’s really popular. There are defiantly more visitors as a result.

woollyheart · 14/08/2018 09:03

I hadn’t realised that this has gone commercial, and people buy plastic tat to do this. I’ve seen some using cloth ribbons etc that at least will bio-degrade, and wasn’t even sure I liked that. Especially as the site already had an amazing magical quality without it. It felt like a lot of personal noisy distracting intrusions into what had been a naturally tranquil and calming space.

SocialPiranha · 14/08/2018 09:07

Someone is quoted as saying “they add a bit of magic to the woods”. Thing is I don’t know about their children but mine have been quite happy to tramp through the woods without the “magic” of all this stuff littering the way.

Also the reason is perfectly logical: they don’t want animals getting ill or injured on this stuff, just like any other foreign objects left around for them to find and mistake for food.

CoolCarrie · 14/08/2018 09:10

EduCated 😃

TheSpottedZebra · 14/08/2018 09:10

Why are people tying ribbons in trees - to decorate them, or is it fairy related too?

Skyejuly · 14/08/2018 09:17

Not just fairy relates.

They are often prayer, wishes and intentions.

WellThisIsShit · 14/08/2018 09:20

Ugly plastic or vile bright painted rubbish.

Secret tiny natural wood and bark doors shaped like the nature around them would be lovely and not harmful to nature.

But that tat? Why? Clearly human made and clearly not part of the landscape around them. Alien objects that need to be taken away.

Can’t believe some people are tantrumming that their harmful rubbish has been taken away. I guess their right to litter bright pink crap is more important than a hedgehogs right to live. Ffs.
