People with 3 year olds, can you help me?

CatLadyToddlerMother · 13/08/2018 13:03

DD is 3y 2m (3y 3m on 28th) and has some known issues including a developmental delay.

I am trying to decide whether to go for a referral to Occupational Therapy for a wheelchair pushchair or not (I am trying to avoid it for obvious reasons).

So can those of you with 3 year olds answer these questions for me?

What age did s/he start walking?
How long would it take them to walk 1 mile? (In terms of time, so if it takes 20 mins say that)
How often do they fall or trip over when walking around outside?

Can you also state their age now in years and months?

Thank you

DD is 3 years 3 months
Walked at 17 months
If walking 1 mile and holding hands I would estimate 15-25 minutes, really guessing here though.
Will fall or trip once probably.

I hope this helps, best of luck with the appointment.

GreenMeerkat · 13/08/2018 13:10

DD is 3y 3m

Walking at 14 months
I would probably say I mile would take 30 minutes
It depends what shoes she is wearing but maybe once or twice

Camomila · 13/08/2018 13:10

Mine's 2 and a half but anyway...(2yr 4m)
15m
Maybe half an hour? There is a local walk we do that's about a mile and DS will walk most of it.
He doesn't usually unless he's tired at the end of a day out.

MynameisJune · 13/08/2018 13:10

DD is only 2.8 so a bit younger but

Walked at 14 months
To walk a mile probably 20-25 mins depending on where we are ie holding hands as she likes to look around. If in a park maybe less as she can run off ahead a bit.
Trips - not very often now, she is starting to coordinate her arms and legs as she runs.

Waggily · 13/08/2018 13:10

My little boy turned 3 last week. He started walking at 16 months, a mile would take us about 20-25 mins and he’d probably trip or stumble a few times, he’s quite clumsy!

CatLadyToddlerMother · 13/08/2018 13:11

All helpful thank you even those with slightly younger children.

Dgd, 3yrs 6mths,

Started walking at 13mths

Could walk a mile in around 30 minutes, but she likes to stop and look at everything

She falls over occasionally, but mostly when rushing/not looking where she's going.

Hope that helps, good luck, whatever you decide Smile

tomhazard · 13/08/2018 13:13

DS is 3 years 1 month. He walked independently at 14 months old, would take about 20-25 minutes to dawdle a mile, and only falls over if he chooses to run down a hill or he trips over an object

Makesmilingyourbesthobby · 13/08/2018 13:14

My dd is now 3 years 11 months, she started walking a month after her 1st birthday and guess what she never really tell over outside until this summer (i think it's to do with me now she's older allowing her a but more space between us in the park and that hence more bumps and falls as not next to her holding her hand) this summer she's had two nasty falls cut knees and such and a ton of triping over trying to run to keep up with her uncle's dog 🐕 too busy watching her friends instead of looking were she's going etc even in the house I've noticed the bumps are coming fell off of dinning room table chair last week, i have a older dd who was the same & as for walking a mile in not sure to be exact and would be a guess 25mins to half hour as she still true to get us to carry her or plays about with things in our journey

SoyDora · 13/08/2018 13:18

DD2 is 3 years 1 month. She started walking the day of her 1st birthday. We walk 1.7 miles to pre school (and the same back) and it takes about half an hour.
She doesn’t fall over walking but maybe once every couple of weeks she falls over running and grazes her knees.

Pizzaformytea · 13/08/2018 13:19

DS is 3y 6m - started walking just before he turned 1.
I'd say it would take 20-25 mins to walk a mile.
He falls over occasionally - usually because he's running and not looking where he's going - rarely when he's just walking normally.

bananasinpyjamas18 · 13/08/2018 13:21

DD is 3yrs 10mths
Walked at 13mths, didnt use the buggy after about 22mths even for day trips to the zoo.
Would walk a mile in around 25 mins
Trips over fairly regularly. Probs bcoz she runs everywhere and is very rough and tumble, a right little bruiser.

Queenofthestress · 13/08/2018 13:24

My ds is 4, with a developmental delay, and occupational therapy won't touch him with a bargepole because he walks even if it's not long distances

Queenofthestress · 13/08/2018 13:27

Just realised who was posting 😂 yeah, physio wouldn't refer ds so we had to change his pushchair for a bigger one, he still uses one now and he's 5 in October

Notthisnotthat · 13/08/2018 13:30

DD now 3 1/2, walked at 2, has developmental delays, would take about 30 mins to walk a mile, but may want into the buggy if she is tired. Has 6 monthly physio checks, Occupational therapy wouldn't see her as her delays aren't severe enough.

CatLadyToddlerMother · 13/08/2018 13:32

Queenofthestress We've already been told that she will likely be considered due to her not walking far at all sadly Sad takes her almost 2 hours to do a mile and often she'll get half way there and sit down and refuse to move. I'm trying to avoid it if i can

OP posts:
Queenofthestress · 13/08/2018 13:34

Don't avoid it, I know how desperately you want to but don't, you know I've been in that place, apply for the referral and get it done for when you need it

Powerless · 13/08/2018 13:35

DD is 3yrs 7 months.

She walked the day before her first birthday but was on her feet at 7 months. Think that was partly down to the Jumperoo supporting her weight whilst the bounced against the ground and built strength in her legs earlier than usual.

She's been talking since about 5 months but only legible words from around 11 months. She had crazy skills such as knowing the Alphabet and counting to ten at 12 months old. However she now has behavioural issues and struggles to understand things said to her. She is being tested for ASD.

There are no physical issues whatsoever. Unless you count me having to put Reins on her near roads and in public as she bolts! You cannot explain danger to her. If you ask her how old she is, she won't understand. Last time I asked her, she responded by saying "Bagel......."

Queenofthestress · 13/08/2018 13:36

It's going to get harder when she gets to DS's age and she's half the size of you and you've gotta somehow lug her out of the middle of the road so she doesn't get squashed, apply for it, get it then it's there for when it's a bad day

Snoopychildminder · 13/08/2018 13:37

DD is 3.5yrs
walking at 10months
It would probably take 20-25mins to walk 1mile.
She is a climber so has bumps and bruises but she isn’t clumsy and won’t fall over nothing, and they are never big falls.

CatLadyToddlerMother · 13/08/2018 13:37

If you ask her how old she is, she won't understand. Last time I asked her, she responded by saying "Bagel......."

DD is the same, all her friends at Preschool/Nursery say "I'm 3" or similar, ask DD and she looks at you and will reply with her name or nothing at all.

I know what you're saying poster Queenofthestress She also falls over a lot. I fill in at least 2 home incident forms a week at Nursery as she has scrapes on her face where she's slipped. She walks into things, and is so incredibly slow. Some of it's dawdling and wanting to look around but the rest is she physically can't do it. But then I think "well most 3 year olds have been walking around outside 18 months to 2 years and she's only been walking around outside for 8 months" and then think I'll put it off for another few months.

I thought I'd ask DS, just got told there's two little eggs

timeisnotaline · 13/08/2018 13:44

3 y 2m, walking at 17/18 m. I’d guess 20m to walk a mile but he also often runs most of the way so faster. Tripping - a couple if tired or running, not normally.
