People with 3 year olds, can you help me?

CatLadyToddlerMother · 13/08/2018 13:03

DD is 3y 2m (3y 3m on 28th) and has some known issues including a developmental delay.

I am trying to decide whether to go for a referral to Occupational Therapy for a wheelchair pushchair or not (I am trying to avoid it for obvious reasons).

So can those of you with 3 year olds answer these questions for me?

What age did s/he start walking?
How long would it take them to walk 1 mile? (In terms of time, so if it takes 20 mins say that)
How often do they fall or trip over when walking around outside?

Can you also state their age now in years and months?

Thank you

My younger sibling is autistic, they had a wheelchair/pushchair until I can’t remember how old but it was a godsend to my parents. Get the pushchair even if you don’t use it now.

My daughter is 3 years, 3mths (and 2wks). She walked at 11.5mths.

A mile would take 25mins maybe, she farts on a lot; asks to be carried, looks at ants, talks to dogs, drags her feet like Kevin the Teenager etc.

She falls over regularly but it's due to running and not looking where she's going. I'd say her gross motor skills are pretty good though since she rides a pedal bike, swims, hops, can walk along balance beams etc

Queenofthestress · 13/08/2018 14:07

I might join you in seeing about it when we go to paed on Fri because currently we have a joovy caboose which is brilliant for kick off days, without it we'd be stuck inside but he's getting too heavy for it so I'm going to be up shit creek without a paddle

Chattycat78 · 13/08/2018 14:10

3 year 7 months here.

Walked at around 11 months.
Will walk into town - maybe a mile- messes around but can be done in about 20 mins. The biggest challenge is getting him to agree to leave the house in the first place!

NanooCov · 13/08/2018 14:15

I have a 3yr 8mth old. He walked at 13 months. 1 mile would take him at least 30 minutes but mainly as he's very distractable and likes to point out every bush, wall, flower, etc. He might trip once. Sometimes not at all. He has a visual impairment with poor depth perception but no other developmental delay. We walk half a mile to and from nursery and I always use the buggy board or double buggy (I have a 9 month old too) to get home quickly.

EllieQ · 13/08/2018 14:15

DD is 3 years 4 months old. She started walking at 1 year 4 months, but had only started crawling at around 1 (though she did a bit of bum shuffling before then). It would take her about 25 minutes to walk a mile - she would probably walk about half the way then want to be carried, but she has walked the full distance sometimes.

She fell over quite a bit for the first few months while walking, and still falls over sometimes now, especially if she's running.

SendYouUpInFlames · 13/08/2018 14:18

Started walking about 14 months.

We walk loads but we can walk a mile in about 15 minutes.

He trips quite a lot but he has bad flat feet so that contributes to him falling alot.

SoyDora · 13/08/2018 14:23

Mine hasn’t been in her pushchair since she was 15 months (completely refused) so she’s had a lot of practice walking.

LillyLollyLoLo · 13/08/2018 14:25

A mile in 15 mins?!

DS 2 years 7 months.

Started walking at 11.5 months. Now would take probably 30 mins to walk a mile. Would probably trip once or twice in that time due to running and not paying attention.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Hoosey · 13/08/2018 14:28

DS is 2y6m so a bit younger.

Walking at 11 months. Can do a mile in about 30 mins. He does trip if he gets excited and runs fast but generally not when walking unless he doesn’t see something in his way.

I have a DN with a pushchair who is 4 and although we don’t use it all the time it is very useful to have when needed.

Vintagegoth · 13/08/2018 14:28

DD2 has hypermobilty and low muscle tone. She first started to take steps unsupported aged 22 months.
Aged 3 she could not manage the 0.5 miles of the school run and would regularly fall and hit her head.
Aged 4 started school doing the school run in the pushchair. She was about 13kgs ,so still fine in the McClaren.
Was referred to podiatry for insoles which have helped a lot. Now aged 5 and takes 20 mins to walk the 0.5 miles to school, so probably 45 mins to cover a mile.

bonzo77 · 13/08/2018 14:30

What age did s/he start walking?
22 months

god knows. At least half an hour.

How often do they fall or trip over when walking around outside?
not that often unless running, especially down hill or on uneven ground.

Can you also state their age now in years and months?
2y 11.5m

Whitelisbon · 13/08/2018 14:33

Dd is 2 years, 6 months.
She was walking at 10 months, and can walk a mile in about 20 minutes if she's in the mood.
If she's walking nicely she rarely falls, if she's running or farting about she falls all the time.

If you need the help, get it. Even if you only need it a couple of times a week or whatever, don't wait until you're desperate before applying as it can take months. Good luck.

CatLadyToddlerMother · 13/08/2018 14:33

Vintagegoth Your DD sounds similar to mine. We don't have a formal diagnosis for Hypermobility but I think she has it, she turns her feet inwards when she's standing, her arches collpse. Her fine motor skills are also poor. She can't colour in the lines or even draw a straight line like her friends can I think possible dyspraxia for her, which would make sense as I am dyspraxic she struggles to hold a cup. Walking is incredibly slow, is better in properly fitted shoes from Startrite or Clarks but still slow. She's also speech delayed.

Oddly enough her actual learning delay is minimal and she can follow instructions fine - so at Nursery they ask them to wash her hands before they eat and she lines up with her friends ready to wait her turn for the sink for example.

Dd is 3 years 1 month, she walked at 11 months, could do a mile in 25 minutes or so and falls over infrequently (might trio over something if she's running). Ds walked at 11 months too but would trio and fall all of the time, he's got better but still wouldn't remain on his feet over say a mile and a half. He wouldn't have answered how old he was at 3.3 either, he only really started to talk just before 3. He can walk for miles and miles now at 4.7, just trips a lot.

fruitofthenight · 13/08/2018 14:35

My dc is 3 years 1 month and he started walking at 10 months old. His walk to nursery is 0.8 miles according to google and it takes us 17 minutes (very precise, we leave at the same time daily) so a mile is probably just over 20 minutes.
He rarely falls when walking maybe once or twice a week, it's usually more when he's running.

Strawberrybelly · 13/08/2018 14:40

Dd is 2 years 11 months. She walked the day after her first birthday and can walk a mile in 20-30 minutes depending on how distracted she gets. She rarely trips over.

Dd is 3yrs 8 months. She can walk a mile in about 25 minutes and rarely falls over now. Ds is 6 years old, but when he was the same age I would have put him on the buggy board for that distance because it took so long, he loaned about it and he frequently fell over. He is now going into year 2 at school and his motor skills have caught up. He’s no gymnast, but he is average in his class at school.

How often do they fall or trip over when walking around outside? When walking? Never. When running? Once or twice a week.

Can you also state their age now in years and months? 3 years and 1 month.

Serenity25 · 13/08/2018 14:49

DD is a few weeks from turning 3.

She started walking just after her first birthday.

Guessing to walk a mile would probably take 25/30 mins, she gets distracted easily!

She trips over occasionally, more because she’s not looking where she’s going.

ProseccoPoppy · 13/08/2018 14:54

Mine is 2 years and almost 10 months.

She started walking at about 11 months - was pretty confident and quick by 1. She had focussed on movement and walking ahead of her speech, which was a little slower (but more than caught up now!)

It is 0.9 miles to our local shop. That takes just over 15 minutes if she focusses, up to 30 if she faffs. So I guess a mile would take 20 - 35 mins for her?

She almost never falls or trips over when walking around outside - perhaps once or twice a month if she loses concentration and walks into something?

CatLadyToddlerMother · 13/08/2018 15:13

Think I'm going to have to go for the referral then. Don't want to as it's just another appointment to go to Sad but it's what's best for her

I don't know anything about the challenges your DD is facing but DD is 3 and 4 months. She walked at 15 months and doesn't fall over while walking at all anymore - sometimes will trip if running fast on uneven ground. A mile would take her about 25-30 minutes I'd guess.

stabbybitch · 13/08/2018 15:26

DS 3 years 10months
Walked at 18months
About 30/35 but does stop & pick up stuff constantly.
Trips occasionally mainly when running.
Still likes to be in a pushchair for the afternoon school run if he's been at pre school all day. Likes to say my legs hurt every 2minutes!
