People with 3 year olds, can you help me?

DD is 3y 2m (3y 3m on 28th) and has some known issues including a developmental delay.

I am trying to decide whether to go for a referral to Occupational Therapy for a wheelchair pushchair or not (I am trying to avoid it for obvious reasons).

So can those of you with 3 year olds answer these questions for me?

What age did s/he start walking?
How long would it take them to walk 1 mile? (In terms of time, so if it takes 20 mins say that)
How often do they fall or trip over when walking around outside?

Can you also state their age now in years and months?

Thank you

My ds is 9 now but he started walking at 3y 2m, he was eventually diagnosed with hypermobility, dyspraxia and hip dysplasia, he was only diagnosed last year, he was seeing health professionals from age 2.

My DD is 4 yrs 5 mos and started walking at 3 yrs 8 months. Physio referred us for a disability buggy because she was over the 15kg limit of most normal buggies. The first one we got was a Maclaren Major clone, which tipped over if you so much as sneezed on it. Then we were given a Do Buggy which weighed a ton and had all the manoeuvrability of an oil tanker. So, my advice is definitely get the referral if your child is over or approaching the weight limit for a standard buggy but stick with a normal one if not.

This probably isn't that helpful (or possibly that relevant) but I wonder if people are being a bit generous in their assessment of the speed their toddlers walk at? The average speed for an adult walking briskly is about 20 minutes for a mile, so a 3 year old (or younger) walking a mile in 15-20 (or even 25) minutes seems unlikely?

Have a 3 year old atm she walked at 10 months and would probably take 30 minutes maybe fall once or twice , on the other hand my 5 year old has developmental delay and autism and it would take over an hour he has poor coordination and hypermobility and gets tired sore legs runs away etc we didn't go down the wheelchair services route as I passed my test last year which made things easier pm me if you like Flowers

Hi Smile DS is 3 years and 2 months, was walking at 11 months, would probably take 25 minutes to walk a mile I reckon, trips quite a lot!

so a 3 year old (or younger) walking a mile in 15-20 (or even 25) minutes seems unlikely?

DDs paediatrician thought not, he said anything between 20 and 40 minutes was normal he was quite surprised by DD managing it in 2 hours or getting half way and going into her pushchair.

DS2 has just turned 3, walked at 10.5 months (yes really). Couldn’t really say how long it takes to walk a mile as we mostly scoot around town but he walks a lot as we’re zone 2 London so the car is the exception. But we can now do a decent family day out at a large NT place and he will walk 90% of it ( the odd ‘carry me mummy’). He falls fairly often but mostly when he’s running. Which is most of the time. He is very physically able though - can catch a wave when body boarding, jump from 60% of his own height (which terrifies me) negotiate steps/ladder on bunk beds.

DD is 3y 7months
And is very petit (18-24 month clothing but can actually still fit in 9-12 comfortably maybe a little short in the lgs)
Walked at 10 months.
She could walk a mile in maybe 25 minutes? But would probably get tired walking not much beyond that.
She trips/stumbles a fair bit because she’s hyper flexible and he ankles bend all over the place (usually wears high topped shoes to help) she was in a pavalk harness from 8-weeks to 6 months because of hip displacia but I don’t think that affects her much
Probably falls over(properly) at least once or twice every day.
