to think you do not do this if you are letting out your flat?

I am on holidays abroad with my family. A friend of a friend is renting us his flat, privately, not airBnB or any other letting system. They do not do this all the time but they have rented to us in the past before.

He just called me to ask me to switch off the TV as they want to watch Netflix in their other house.

I was so shocked I didn't know what to say.

IABU to think if you are prepared to rent out your flat for extra income you suck it up or deal with it differently??

Extra screens on Netflix is £2 more a month. Tight bastards.

Thehop · 12/08/2018 23:39

Massively cf

Singlenotsingle · 12/08/2018 23:40

Tell him where to go! What happens tomorrow night when you want to watch TV?

HollowTalk · 12/08/2018 23:40

I thought you could have 3 people watching it on different screens at the same time? I'm on my son's and so is my daughter.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 12/08/2018 23:42

What a tight ass bastard. Keep watching the tv and tell them to add more screens to their Netflix package.

LellyMcKelly · 12/08/2018 23:43

Is he letting it out at a reduced rate as a favour? If so, I’d probably turn it off. If you’re paying full market rate and Netflix is included in the deal then he’s being a CF.

IamAporcupine · 12/08/2018 23:45

@Singlenotsingle - It has actually happened twice already. Tonight he said he would appreciate if I asked him first Confused

Is it really £2 to add an extra screen??!!

Sofabitch · 12/08/2018 23:47

I wouldn't have thought Netflix would come with a rental. Surely you'd just log on to your own Netflix?

IamAporcupine · 12/08/2018 23:50

@LellyMcKelly - not as a favour and not reduced rate. The only slightly unconventional thing about it is that I contacted him to ask if he was interested to let his flat out this year

BackforGood · 12/08/2018 23:50

I think as they are doing you a favour, and letting you stay in their holiday home, then jst suck it up and understand the netflix isn't included.

If they rent it out commercially, that is different, but I presume there was no contract to say it included Netflix?
If they rent it out a lot, then you could perhaps mention that it is only a couple of ££ extra to have the more than one screen thing, so, a lot of people might appreciate having it, and just to bung the difference in price on the price of the holiday rental.

Maybe a lot of people don't sit in and watch TV on their week / 2 weeks abroad though, so it's not really come up before?

SneakyGremlins · 12/08/2018 23:51

I think Netflix is £7 a month for one screen, £8 for three and £10 for five.

I pay for five because of ultra high definition.

Usernumbers1234 · 12/08/2018 23:53

Not your Netflix. He’s not asking you to turn the TV off (I assume) Just to stop watching his Netflix account. Log into your own, unless the tenancy explicitly said you got logins to his mobile apps, which I doubt it did. YABU

LadyLoveYourWhat · 12/08/2018 23:53

Why don't you use your own Netflix account? If you don't have one, then why would you be bothered about watching it on holiday?

steff13 · 12/08/2018 23:53

I'd use the Netflix if he left it logged in, but if he asked me not to, I'd log in on my own account. Not a big deal, I don't think.

IamAporcupine · 12/08/2018 23:58

@Sofabitch - that's a good point but DH claims you need to change the settings etc to do that? How would you do it?

@Backforgood - it is not their holiday home, it is their main home; they are at their holiday home now.
but also, are they doing us a favour? (genuine question)

OP posts:
Slartybartfast · 13/08/2018 00:00

just dont watch netflix op

IamAporcupine · 13/08/2018 00:05

We do have Netflix at home, I just do not know the log in details. I genuinely had no idea that people would log into their accounts.
How do you log out?

OP posts:
KeepServingTheDrinks · 13/08/2018 00:07

I'm with you, Slarty in that I don't go on holiday to watch TV!!!

Was going to post -
Hey, why not do something different on your holidays. Read? Play a game together? Chat?

Holidays are supposed to be DIFFERENT from day-to-day living.

Having said that, it IS quite crap of him, so you're not BU. but I do think you are bit U for wanting to

BertieBotts · 13/08/2018 00:08

Eh? Just use your own account. Log in and out will be somewhere in settings if it's on a smart tv.

BertieBotts · 13/08/2018 00:09

If you don't know your login details just click I've forgotten my password and they will send you an email, which you can access on whatever you're using to mumsnet, to reset it.

thebewilderness · 13/08/2018 00:10

Use your own account by signing out of theirs on the TV and signing in on yours, so they can use their elsewhere.

WidowTwonky · 13/08/2018 00:12

We were in France last week and Netflix saved my sanity! Kids up early, no English tv, Netflix - yes please! It’s not like we sat there all day watching tv

BackforGood · 13/08/2018 00:14

Well, what I mean is that it isn't a commercial let. In fact, the fact it is their own home means it is even less like a commercial let. It means they don't let it out on a regular basis, so havn't really gone in to details of things like Netflix options - but the know they wanted to watch something now, and you are stopping them, by watching their account, in their home.
I don't really know who is doing who a favour, but it isn't hard to understand that if you are in someone's home that is different from an apartment in a complex that is set up for holiday lets. You respect that it is their "stuff" around the home, and, in this case, that there is no Netflix.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 13/08/2018 00:19

What the hell are you using their Netflix for. You have you own. FFS you are being a cf, I dont know why they haven't changed their password to stop you. I assume they are trying to be nice. Flats do not come with website subscriptions.

hungryhippo90 · 13/08/2018 00:19

Haha, they will not spend the extra £1-2 for an extra screen on Netflix.

Sorry, but that’s massively tight.
