to think you do not do this if you are letting out your flat?

I am on holidays abroad with my family. A friend of a friend is renting us his flat, privately, not airBnB or any other letting system. They do not do this all the time but they have rented to us in the past before.

He just called me to ask me to switch off the TV as they want to watch Netflix in their other house.

I was so shocked I didn't know what to say.

IABU to think if you are prepared to rent out your flat for extra income you suck it up or deal with it differently??

@BertieBotts - i think that's exactly what happened re. him not realising he would not be able to access his account if I used it too.

That's true about the midnight call! At the time I felt everything was a bit too much, that's all.

And to those saying 'do not watch Netflix then' - I would be absolutely fine with this! Believe it or not it is actually my 86-yo mother the one who is addicted!

I genuinely didn't know people would use their own Netflix accounts. i thought it was much more complicated than that

...and in just the same way, it probably never crossed his mind that he wouldn't be able to use his netflix wherever he was, because you were watching it. It's just a bit of a mix up due to the fact this isn't a commercial let, set up and thought through (or learned from experience). He's not being mean, he just hasn't set his home up as a commercial let as he doesn't usually let it out. If this is going to become a regular thing (you say you asked if you could stay there again, as you liked it before) , then you could perhaps mention that he can pay £2 more to allow more than one user - probably just not even crossed his mind. I don't think either of you were being rude, just not really thinking through the possible options.

update 1 - I have apologised and said it was a genuine misunderstanding. All good I believe

update 2 - he has now texted me to say that he wants the cleaning lady to come at 9am on the day we are checking out at midday. Confused

any suggestions re how to deal with that?!
I swear I will never rent from an acquaintance again!

SneakyGremlins · 15/08/2018 00:43

Do you have a written confirmation that check out time is 12?

IamAporcupine · 15/08/2018 01:40

what's up.
in fact we agreed at 1pm.
he asked if i'd leave at 12, I asked if it could be 1pm, he said yes fine

OP posts:
IamAporcupine · 15/08/2018 01:45

just to clarify - he wants the cleaning lady to be here (cleaning) until we leave (at 12)

Having the cleaning service come before you have left, is a recipe for unhappiness all round. They will be in your way, you will miss the last few precious hours of your holiday and the place will not be as clean as it would be if they came after you check out, so you will more than likely get grief about that.

Your options are either to insist that they come after you leave, or to leave early. I know which one would suit me best, in your shoes. Do you ever want to be in touch with the person renting it out again?

IamAporcupine · 15/08/2018 08:22

Probably not the most diplomatic option but I have insisted they come after I left

ferrier · 15/08/2018 08:25

In a holiday rental I'd assume you would use your own Netflix account unless it was very specific somewhere. I certainly use my own Amazon Prime and Virgin Go accounts if I remember the b**y passwords and they work on a similar system.

highheelsandbobblehats · 15/08/2018 08:50

I'd log in to my own Netflix account at a holiday let purely because it has all my history on it. It would annoy me if someone started using my profile as not only could I not watch it at the same time as them, it would mess with my recommendations.
OP, apologise for the misunderstanding, and then log out and back in as yourself. Unlimited Netflix, and no problems.
As for the screens, yep, £10 for five. I pay for the five as I have one, my DC have one each (they have Kindles, so solves any bickering if they want to watch simultaneously), and I have given the log in to one of my besties and my dad and stepmums, who have a profile each. For the people suggesting that the person who owns the flat pay an extra £2 a month for extra screens, really?! Why is it his problem, when it's so easy to just log out and back in as yourself?!

OP, the TV sounds like a smart TV, so it's Netflix enabled, bit it doesn't have to remain as that particular login. Just remember to log yourself back out when you leave.

highheelsandbobblehats · 15/08/2018 08:53

Argh, my phone hadn't refreshed properly. Glad it's all sorted. Seems a bit pointless her coming when you haven't left yet. How can she clean when you're bustling around packing? Just illogical.

Belindabauer · 15/08/2018 09:02

Regarding the cleaning I would reply
" no it is not ok for anyone to come into the property until after we have left, which you agreed would be 1pm. "
No further communication and if the cleaner does turn up before hand do not let them in!

Don't rent from him again and let him know you aren't happy if he brings it up.
He isn't doing you a favour, he is getting rental for his flat.

FinallyHere · 15/08/2018 09:06

I have insisted they come after I left

Good choice , enjoy the rest of your holiday.

serbska · 15/08/2018 09:29

I wouldn't watch netflix on someone else's account - it will muck all their watched and fav stuff up! Log him out and log your own account on. I think you are being a bit CF since it isn't a 'proper' rental thing.

serbska · 15/08/2018 09:29

also never mix business and pleasure.. renting from/to acquaintances and friends and family is often a recipe for ill feeling

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/08/2018 09:34

He's a bit cheeky. If he had logged out of Netflix you would have logged in on your own account (just did that on my holiday). As for the cleaner, I would have said no too.

IamAporcupine · 15/08/2018 22:51

Last update - he wrote back agreeing it was not a good option and has now re-arranged for the cleaner to come later, so all good!

You can log out remotely. He could have done that too.

Slartybartfast · 17/08/2018 08:34

was your DM watching The Crown? Grin

oldsockeater · 17/08/2018 08:39

YABU. Are you also on his Facebook and eBay accounts whilst you are there?

Centreparcsooheer · 17/08/2018 21:44

YABU. Are you also on his Facebook and eBay accounts whilst you are there?

Grin because that's the same. I do wonder what goes on in some people's heads sometimes!! On no planet is Netflix the same as Facebook, seeing what someone is watching is hardly buying something on eBay.

(I wasn't going to bite to the above but am in a foul mood so decided to!)
