to think you do not do this if you are letting out your flat?

I am on holidays abroad with my family. A friend of a friend is renting us his flat, privately, not airBnB or any other letting system. They do not do this all the time but they have rented to us in the past before.

He just called me to ask me to switch off the TV as they want to watch Netflix in their other house.

I was so shocked I didn't know what to say.

IABU to think if you are prepared to rent out your flat for extra income you suck it up or deal with it differently??

@KeepServingTheDrinks - that did make me laugh!
I am on holiday with my 86 year-old mother and 6 year old son. We spend all day playing!
We had gone out for dinner (and a chat FYI) and wanted to chill with her in front of the TV as it is something we never do together as we live in different countries....

sorry I had to reply to your patronising post

It really isn’t complicated to swap across to your own log in details. We only jumped on the Netflix bandwagon recently, and my 7yo was swapping across accounts on the first day with no instructions.

I don’t think you can use someone else’s account without prior agreement, and that agreement needs to give priority of access to the account holder. It’s also a bit annoying to have other people messing with your account algorithms, they’ll be seeing film/tv ‘suggestions’ based on your watching habits rather than their own.

WidowTwonky · 13/08/2018 00:31

Netflix is part of a tv these days, just like the sky channels. If they didn’t want you watching it they should’ve logged out in advance. Simple

IamAporcupine · 13/08/2018 00:32

@BackforGood - Yes I can see that.

I genuinely didn't know people would use their own Netflix accounts. i thought it was much more complicated than that.
Thanks

I don't really understand why you wouldn't think to use your own account? Do you use somebody else's email account just because you are at their computer? Confused

LadyLoveYourWhat · 13/08/2018 00:45

Not everyone has Sky, @WidowTwonky, we won't ever be getting it (and we've only had Netflix in the last 6 months!)

WidowTwonky · 13/08/2018 00:49

lady sorry what I meant was, it’s just the press of a button to get into Netflix - not something you need to log into and/or setup. It’s often there on your remote control. So why wouldn’t you use it

IamAporcupine · 13/08/2018 00:49

@BerttieBoots - as I said I genuinely didn't think that's how it worked. I thought a TV would either have or not have Netflix, a bit like satellite TV I guess?

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 13/08/2018 00:54

Oh right, I suppose that makes sense. I've always used mine on a computer so I suppose I've seen it differently. But no it's not linked to the tv, you can use your own account wherever you are in the world :) just remember to log out when you leave.

whatwouldyoubelikeat28 · 13/08/2018 00:54

There are some people on this thread, including the OP, that are really not equipped for the modern world. Confused

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 13/08/2018 00:58

I would not expect to use some one’s Netflix account Confused
Ot’s like using someone’s email address. Just log into your own. You’re a CF Grin

thebewilderness · 13/08/2018 00:58

The TV has netflix at the push of a button because they pay for it and signed in to their account on the TV.
They asked you to turn it off so they could sign out on that screen and sign in on another.

IamAporcupine · 13/08/2018 01:03

@whatwouldyoubelikeat28 - I could not agree more!!

IamAporcupine · 13/08/2018 01:07

@BerttieBotts - thanks

WidowTwonky · 13/08/2018 01:08

So equally would it be wrong to watch sky on someone else’s tv? I guess you’d think so, but again I wouldn’t have thought that was being a CF

Centreparcsooheer · 13/08/2018 01:47

It wouldn't occur to me to log into my own account either OP, it's nothing like using someone's email address- a strange comparison- it's tv programmes!!! You're hardly hacking them...

Walkingdeadfangirl · 13/08/2018 01:58

The difference between sky TV and Netflix is that television is an expected service to provide when you rent a property. You dont need a password to use the normal sky service/TV. Netflix is password protected, the owners were to nice/stupid to let you use their saved password.

The best comparison is that you might expect a rental property to provide internet access, you do not expect the rental to provide you with someone else's email address with a saved password to send messages from.

IamAporcupine · 13/08/2018 02:14

thanks Centreparcsooheer glad I am not the only one! I also think that the email account analogy is not 100% valid.

Yet I see the other side as well now and will not use his account any longer. Thank you all

LadyLoveYourWhat · 13/08/2018 07:41

The difference is Sky is linked to the property (you need a dish or a fibre connection), Netflix isn't, it's a streaming service.

LadyLoveYourWhat · 13/08/2018 07:44

As someone else has said, the owners should really have logged out before they left if they didn't have enough screens on their account to share with you.

PurpleFlower1983 · 13/08/2018 07:49

I wouldn’t expect someone’s Netflix to be included in a holiday rental. Find out your login and use your own.

user1471426142 · 13/08/2018 07:52

I’m on the fence with this one. Iplayer is free but you have to log into that now and if that was on a smart tv I wouldn’t think twice about using the iplayer app on someone else’s tv. If Netflix was enabled, I’d access it like any other tv app. But, if they’d have logged out, I wouldn’t have minded at all as Netflix access isn’t exactly standard. I think they should have logged out and they made a mistake. Once they had rented the place out and realised you were using it they needed to suck it up and not call you to stop watching tv.

bbcessex · 13/08/2018 07:54

How awkward for you, OP. I bet you didn’t expect to be told not to watch the in-situ telly & options.

It’s an interesting point, I suppose. most people wouldn’t think to ever log out of Netflix on the devices & TVs they use.

I suppose if it was a proper commercial let, the owner would buy an account for the let unit.

Hmm.. more & more complexities in our modern world!

You’re not unreasonable though OP - of course you would use whatever was in front of you. 😍

ManeNachger · 13/08/2018 08:00

I would find a different let next time. Even if he is technically right I would have let it go for a night or two. Or said it really nicely.

longwayoff · 13/08/2018 08:03

How petty can anyone be? Don't drink the contents of their wine cellar. Log into your own account. Remember to log out when you leave and leave them £2 as they dont know how to share.
