DD is starting year 9. She has just showed me the bag she wants for next year. A flipping leather look tote bag.

Apparently "everyone has them in year 9".

Seriously, what the actual fuck is this nonsense?

Her school does not have lockers and she walks to after school sports several days a week. She really wants to carry all her books and sports stuff in a tote bag!? AIBU to be entirely baffled, generally wtf, and completely reluctant to go along with this!?

*Note - Have just had a flashback to the fashion at school when I was a teen for wearing a rucksack on one shoulder only. That was shit. Maybe I am BU and carrying your stuff around with self induced difficulty is a feature of being a teen!?!?

WorldCupNovice I had one of those, usually covered in graffiti or paint. Rucksacks had to be carried on one shoulder only in the 90s, and coats were avoided if possible. DD informs me I am uncool for carrying a bag on one shoulder (among my multiple other crimes against fashion) whereas they now wear them on both.

Maybugger · 12/08/2018 19:44

I'm an oldie on here 😊 and another user of a leather briefcase when I started senior school- I used to carry the blasted thing, stuffed full, in front of me with two arms. It wrecked my posture for ever!
We used to try getting away with highly impractical paper/card tote bags that disintegrated if it rained strictly against school rules (very harsh convent school ☹️)

NotUmbongoUnchained · 12/08/2018 19:47

The fashion when I was in year 9 was a teeny tiny handbag from Jane Norman, which was just big enough for a pen, pouch of tobacco and phone. Which was all I used to take to school anyway Grin

These army and navy surplus sores bags were in for girls when I was at school. The boys had the rucksack version in khaki or blue.

My first high school bag (1987) was a midland bank freebie sports bag, and yes I did get the piss absolutely taken out of me (thanks mum - how could you not have realised that would happen!!). To add insult to injury I also had My PE kit in a kwik save bag Blush.
I quickly realised the error of my unfashionable ways and graduated onto a head rucksack (£12 from Argos) I bought this myself (my mum couldn’t afford one of the pleather ones).
I then used my birthday money for a bright pink puma sports bag, with a head shoe bag for PE kit. Sports bag carried by handle strap over 1 arm. Lasted ages.
I then had a big Adidas rucksack, and when at college at 16/17 a very graffitied cotton satchel.
My vote is to Get your daughter the Tote she wants!!

Jellylover · 12/08/2018 20:01

Check the school will permit tote bags - ours won't. The girls all have Hype rucksacks.
I used to have a fluorescent yellow Adidas bag with a wicker basket for my cookery - nightmare getting on the bus, snagged my tights and as the bottom wasn't flat the food used to slide all over the place.

Passthecake30 · 12/08/2018 20:22

I had a massive great head bag, filled it full of 4 double folders and text books. 1.5litres of drink... it was SO heavy and I was a walking weapon with that thing sticking off one hip...
I think when my 2 go to secondary I'll get them a cheapish plain rucksack/tote and then see what peer pressure there is. I know how important it is to fit in, I dearly wanted bottle tops on clumpy shoes but instead had hush puppies Blush

Honestly I get my girls what they want for this sort of thing
There are enough things to argue about

WorldCupnovice · 12/08/2018 20:27

Melfish As I recall I had the names of my favourite bands written all over mine. EllenJanesthickerknickers I am sure I had a blue one, went to an all girls school, so not sure what bags lads used.

WeaselsRising · 12/08/2018 20:32

Late 70s we all had tote bags at my school. The boys all had sensible sports bags. I really wanted to be a boy Sad

Radiosheep · 12/08/2018 20:43

When I was at school there was a time when carpenters bags were the thing! Loads of pockets so took you ages to find anything and all yr books got soaked in the rain. That trend didn't last long long strangely enough. Guess yr gotta let have one OP can't let her be the odd one out!

Bluelady · 12/08/2018 20:45

I left school in 1971, we all used tote bags not a backpack or satchel in sight. It was a grammar school too.

Lethaldrizzle · 12/08/2018 20:50

I don't ever remember bags being a thing and still don't.

AuditAngel · 12/08/2018 20:52

DS is going into year 10, DD1 joins him this year, they have to have the school’s own compulsory backpack. Easy, no peer pressure, but a pain when someone else takes your child’s bag by mistake.....

theSnuffster · 12/08/2018 21:19

I remember my first bag when I started secondary school being huge... Must have been a camping backpack or something. I was tiny too, smaller than all my friends, I must have looked ridiculous!

When I was about 14 the trend was to have a 'quicksilver' backpack. I had to beg my mum for it as it was more expansive than some others in the shop and she didn't have the spare cash to spend more than necessary- I think we went halves in the end. I still have it now, about 16 years later. Still in great condition too!

theSnuffster · 12/08/2018 21:20

*expensive!

glueandstick · 12/08/2018 21:24

@longsummerdays what are they called?! I want one!

itsalldyingout · 12/08/2018 21:30

EllenJanesthickerknickers - approx what year/s were you using the army surplus bags?

Swissgemma · 12/08/2018 21:37

I had a canvas army surplus bag 96/97

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 12/08/2018 21:44

Ah nostalgic memories of a Jane Norman bag on PE kit days. We thought we were too cool. In reality, we just had plastic bags. Grin I miss being really young sometimes.

WindyWednesday · 12/08/2018 21:47

1992/3 we had the river island carrier bags.

Also canvas bags which we drew all over. They held two leaver arch files and nothing else. Short handles which dug in,

Twistella · 12/08/2018 21:50

I would just get her the bag she wants and not give it another thought. I have four kids and worries. I can't comprehend why you are so enervated

Twistella · 12/08/2018 21:50

*and plenty of other worries
