DD is starting year 9. She has just showed me the bag she wants for next year. A flipping leather look tote bag.

Apparently "everyone has them in year 9".

Seriously, what the actual fuck is this nonsense?

Her school does not have lockers and she walks to after school sports several days a week. She really wants to carry all her books and sports stuff in a tote bag!? AIBU to be entirely baffled, generally wtf, and completely reluctant to go along with this!?

*Note - Have just had a flashback to the fashion at school when I was a teen for wearing a rucksack on one shoulder only. That was shit. Maybe I am BU and carrying your stuff around with self induced difficulty is a feature of being a teen!?!?

I still use my Benetton duffle. Too old to have used it for school. I had it as a gym bag when I was going to the gym after work. Still use it as a swimming bag. Does this make me cool? It must be indescribable I’ve had it for about 20 years.

ThomasRichard · 14/08/2018 14:17

Year 7: All the boys had Nike Just Do It backpacks.

Year 8-10: we all had drawstring Nike bags. Except me, cos my mum insisted on getting me one with wider straps Hmm

Year 11: the boys kept their Nike drawstring bags but the girls got handbags. I remember persuading my dad to buy me a United Colors of Benetton handbag on holiday in Italy. Loved that bag.

Years 7-11: all the girls carried their PE kits in Jane Norman, La Senza, Next or River Island carrier bags.

No idea what I had in VIth form but I doubt it was particularly practical.

OP, just buy her the bag. It’s ridiculous to an adult but small things like that are important to teenagers and it will affect how she feels every day at school.

JuJu2017 · 14/08/2018 14:18

Not at all. Showing my age here but it’s been like ten years since I was in school and I had tote bags back then. The really tacky fake Morgan ones were the most popular.

JuJu2017 · 14/08/2018 14:19

Just to add as well, my mum tried to get me to take a bright pink backpack and I got bullied. Just let her have the bag; it’s not worth getting picked on over and it’ll make her feel more confident and like she fits in

Icapturethecast1e · 14/08/2018 15:47

I thought the backpack fashion was in again. I 've seen teens & adults with trendy looking ones. I had a backpack in school & uni, my backs still knackered though.

Canshopwillshop · 14/08/2018 16:30

Incywincy - of course there is no difference between learning ability and choice of bag! I don’t think anyone was thinking or suggesting that 😳

bourbonbiccy · 14/08/2018 17:40

@MabelStable my gosh, you have just taken me back to school days..I had the bag in the second picture you posted....wow ... I'm on tiny so it was packed full and looked massive on he lol and if course only worn in one shoulder lol

manicmij · 14/08/2018 18:27

Go with it. If she has to cart a lot of books plus her sports kit a tote bag probably won't take the strain for long. Just make it plain that the tote is for the year and if the handles don't last she will just have to carry whats left with contents. Good luck.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 14/08/2018 21:59

Canshop somewhere further back alluded to it, so I just put my view on.

Quite frankly I’m surprised some of them don’t use wheely suitcases with the amount of junk they seem to want to carry! :o

IncyWincyGrownUp · 14/08/2018 21:59

Someone further back. I can’t type today. I need another coffee.

Almondio · 14/08/2018 22:04

Get her a Head bag with the zip off end bit for sports kit. How I yearned for one of those bad boys as a late 80s early 90s teenaged girl!

We had Benetton drawstring carrier bags for our PE kits. So cool.

Canshopwillshop · 14/08/2018 22:23

@Incywincygrownup - I’m sorry, I missed that post. Wheely case good idea - DD’s bag weighs a ton!!

ScreechOwlx · 14/08/2018 22:30

Guilty! I had a tiny Jane Norman bag in year 9! I loved it! In fact the year after that in year 10 my parents bought me a kookai handbag and I was over the moon! I had to carry all my big text books in topshop carrier bags! Let her work it out for herself :) give it a little time before she whines she can't fit much in it!

Beingginger · 14/08/2018 22:45

I had a deeply uncool trespass bag in year 7 that my mum insisted I carry.
After that I had a record bag that I’d decorated with band logos and patches but it killed my shoulders it was so heavy.
In year 10/11 I had a rucksack, but I wasn’t a cool kid so I didn’t have a head bag because I didn’t like them even though nearly all the girls I my year had one. The kookai/Jane Norman bag thing started when I was that age too but it passed me by.
I was a goth so anything trendy was obviously not to my taste, my friends didn’t mix with the cool girls, we were shunned for being weirdos!

Up til 4 the form it was satchel unless PE or cooking when you were allowed a sports bag or a wicker basket. From 4th form up we used something like this, but with smaller handles

Icapturethecast1e · 14/08/2018 23:05

namechange2pointoh I like that bag but it's too trendy for me. Blush

getupdressandshowup · 23/08/2018 16:26

Yes to the jelly bags and the long handled/string handled fancy clothes shop bags that costs 50p. eg Daisy, Jane Norman. I am way past school age but every day I have my handbag for personal stuff and a long handled trendy jute bag/canvas bag/posh carrier thing for my lunch, change of shows, umbrella and a million other things that creep in there. I'm known for having two bags every day.

getupdressandshowup · 23/08/2018 16:28

WindyWednesday can we have photo of the Benetton duffle please? Nostalgia. I didn't have one but always liked them. Had a couple of Benetton purses with flags on or the huge Benetton logo. I wonder where mine went?

prettygreywalls · 23/08/2018 18:32

I don't ever remember bags being a thing and still don't

Nor do I

Never was a sheep or a trend setter - I had an untrendy carrier bag ,

onemouseplace · 23/08/2018 19:07

I remember starting secondary school with an OK Delsey green and red rucksack. Then graduated to an RAF blue army surplus haversack for most of the mid 90s like half the girls at my school. Then, I had a black pleather large messenger/ satchel style bag from Next for 6th form that I remember a lot of us had and I initially hated the look of until they were everywhere.

TacoFriday · 23/08/2018 19:19

This Michael Kors tote in black or beige is what all the older girls walking to our local Grammar have on their arms. I honestly thought they were under £50 because I’ve seen so many young girls carrying books in them. £220?!!
