To tell my friend her business name is bad?

Name changed. Sorry this is long.

I have a lovely friend who's recently been through some horrendous times recently. She's just starting to launch a new business which I think she'd be excellent at. But the name she has chosen is...not good. Should I say anything or keep my mouth shut?

She's been putting stuff together for this behind the scenes for a couple of years. She picked the name and set up the website before she told us (her friends I mean) what it was called. If she'd asked for input then I know we'd have steered her somewhere else. It's hard to say, people have to say "What?" when told it, when you hear it there's ambiguity about the spelling so I worry about people finding the site if doing a search for it, it's kind of really unsuited to the business - like if I said the name and asked you to guess what it sells I doubt anyone would get close - so it's really not great. But I didn't know how to say that to her and the project was parked for ages anyway.

Now all of a sudden it looks like it's got an opportunity to take off and she just said to me about getting the website finished. I don't know should I mention maybe having a rethink? If I even mention it in the sense of "So I'm just wondering, is it too late to change the name?" she'll know I don't like it and she might be upset (not about me as such but that maybe others won't either). I don't know if she's tied to it legally, like if it's registered, and so changing it and the site etc would be a nightmare and then I've given her cause to doubt it when it's too late. On the other hand, am I a crap friend for not mentioning something that I think might hold the business back? It's in a very image conscious area and it's a really bad fit for that and I don't want people judging her badly.

She's been through so much and she deserves this to be the start of something amazing - and it could be - so I don't know if speaking up or shutting up is best for her.

To be honest I don’t have to know any more, that alone makes it a very bad choice of name.

Maybe you can google up some resources on ‘naming your startup’ and start a discussion from there. You are absolutely right about the ease of finding a website - it’s critical.

PM me please?

charliebear78 · 11/08/2018 19:55

PM please

crenellations · 11/08/2018 20:01

And me please?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/08/2018 20:02

"Kodak" was purposely named that because it didn't sound like anything else, so I wouldn't say anything about a "nonsense name". If it makes it sound like something else though, I'd probably say something.

Whoever said about naming sneakers after a goddess, I think the goddess of victory is a good name for a sports brand!

CSIblonde · 11/08/2018 20:04

Hmm. Depends on the industry. I'm in Marketing: weird names that don't tell you what they do are common. Also if you watch credits on any TV programme the companies involved all have seriously weird 'trendy' names like a fruit etc.

If it's seriously going to affect her business I'd probably say 'that's an interesting
name, do you think it tells people what you do?' then leave it.

Standstilling · 11/08/2018 20:05

Ah, I have had more info from my PMer about the business type. The business type focusses on quality and the name does NOT convey that.

OP, could you suggest your friend does a little bit of market research or a small focus group? That way her potential customers can tell her it's not a good name, rather than you.

TornFromTheInside · 11/08/2018 20:09

Standstilling can you drop me a pm with a bit of info please?

KatieMarieJ · 11/08/2018 20:09

T E Stockwell were the tea company Jack COhen first sold, which he then utilised TES and CO from his own name. :)

Would love to know the name too it anyone would mind pm'ing me :)

TornFromTheInside · 11/08/2018 20:15

One of the reasons for fairly abstract company names is that they are flexible and allow a business to change direction.

Carphone Warehouse really dates itself
O2 doesn't

They can also make people wonder how they came about, and make for a discussion point - some names are truly abstract, whilst others are very tenuous links that nobody would get, but give a 'backstory' to the name.

Lots of companies change direction. Nokia made rubber products long before moving into mobile phones, and became the world number one for a decade.
Peugeot manufactured coffee mills and bicycles.

Etino · 11/08/2018 20:16

I’d love a PM of the company and business field 😉

TornFromTheInside · 11/08/2018 20:23

I believe the business is quality scarecrows, but not sure what field that's in.

JessicaJonesJacket · 11/08/2018 20:25

You can check on Companies House to see if she has registered the company name. You'll also be able to tell if she has bought the url for the company by the name of the website. If she has done either of those, then I wouldn't mention your dislike of the name to her. It will only unsettle her.

Small companies often change their name as they grow and extend their services. It's not overly complicated to change name and also not that uncommon so if she finds the name isn't working, she can always change it later.

TornFromTheInside · 11/08/2018 20:28

She can trade under many different names with one actual company name. Loads of firms have multiple identities sometimes for different sectors, and sometimes for different markets, and sometimes just to give a different brand image.

Make a veggie product that has diet properties and fitness? market it under three brands if you want to - all the same product, but packaged and targeted appropriately!

I doubt this thread would be of interest to the DM tbh, it's not shocking or controversial.

If anyone could pm me the name I'd be grateful, thanks!

Charolais · 11/08/2018 20:44

The worst ever name was Toys R Us, I mean who puts an R backwards, wtf did that signify?

Toys R Us is an American company founded in the late 1940’s and the backwards R is how children sometimes write their R’s. It was a brilliant idea and very eye catching.

Vitalogy · 11/08/2018 20:45

Maybe MN could delete the thread. OP, has gone out for the evening I think.

Radiosheep · 11/08/2018 20:48
