To tell my friend her business name is bad?

Name changed. Sorry this is long.

I have a lovely friend who's recently been through some horrendous times recently. She's just starting to launch a new business which I think she'd be excellent at. But the name she has chosen is...not good. Should I say anything or keep my mouth shut?

She's been putting stuff together for this behind the scenes for a couple of years. She picked the name and set up the website before she told us (her friends I mean) what it was called. If she'd asked for input then I know we'd have steered her somewhere else. It's hard to say, people have to say "What?" when told it, when you hear it there's ambiguity about the spelling so I worry about people finding the site if doing a search for it, it's kind of really unsuited to the business - like if I said the name and asked you to guess what it sells I doubt anyone would get close - so it's really not great. But I didn't know how to say that to her and the project was parked for ages anyway.

Now all of a sudden it looks like it's got an opportunity to take off and she just said to me about getting the website finished. I don't know should I mention maybe having a rethink? If I even mention it in the sense of "So I'm just wondering, is it too late to change the name?" she'll know I don't like it and she might be upset (not about me as such but that maybe others won't either). I don't know if she's tied to it legally, like if it's registered, and so changing it and the site etc would be a nightmare and then I've given her cause to doubt it when it's too late. On the other hand, am I a crap friend for not mentioning something that I think might hold the business back? It's in a very image conscious area and it's a really bad fit for that and I don't want people judging her badly.

She's been through so much and she deserves this to be the start of something amazing - and it could be - so I don't know if speaking up or shutting up is best for her.

My friend asked me about her logo, not the name. I felt it looked like a sanitary product. She wasn't amused. But she took it onboard and changed it. Still her logo but a different take.
A good friend will see when help is required. Or when tact is required. Best to read into the situation.

It sounds too near a well known stationers and a bit like a livery yard. Definitely not memorable in that business field. A bit of a crap name tbh. I would tactfully say something or advise a bit of market research??

rainbowstardrops · 12/08/2018 11:08

Could somebody please PM me the name and business. I'm intrigued!

helpfulormeddling · 12/08/2018 11:19

I checked in on this today and tbh I didn't expect, well how it developed for sure! But also the amount of interest. I didn't think people would send the name between them, I'm quite new here so that was maybe stupid of me. Also did not set it up as some kind of attention-seeking "please send me PMs" thing, honestly. This is someone I genuinely care about and I've been having this dilemma in my head for quite a while. It's only now that there's been recent movement that I feel it's now or never if I'm going to say so I just wanted some objective opinions. I would absolutely die if this got back to her, she'd be so hurt and she's genuinely been through enough. So I'll leave it now and not keep sending it out there, but much appreciated to anyone who's already given suggestions as to whether or not to mention it, and the best way to do that. Thanks all.

I think you should gently question her and maybe ask how she came up with the name. I'd want a good friend to tell me especially if it might hold her business back.
Good luck

TornFromTheInside · 12/08/2018 14:08

Telling someone their logo is a bit naff or business name is dull / confused is a nightmare. It rarely goes down well and they are often personally attached to it.
By the time they've had stationary done, and purchased a domain name (not expensive in most cases) - they're already emotionally invested in it.

You're on a hiding to nothing.

minisoksmakehardwork · 12/08/2018 15:05

Having now seen the name (thank you @helpfulormeddling), I don't think it's 'that' bad.

I wouldn't necessarily get what the business was without being told. But I do see where she is coming from. As long as her branding reflects the quality of her work and isn't all glitz and sparkle, I think it could work out ok.
