To tell my friend her business name is bad?

Name changed. Sorry this is long.

I have a lovely friend who's recently been through some horrendous times recently. She's just starting to launch a new business which I think she'd be excellent at. But the name she has chosen is...not good. Should I say anything or keep my mouth shut?

She's been putting stuff together for this behind the scenes for a couple of years. She picked the name and set up the website before she told us (her friends I mean) what it was called. If she'd asked for input then I know we'd have steered her somewhere else. It's hard to say, people have to say "What?" when told it, when you hear it there's ambiguity about the spelling so I worry about people finding the site if doing a search for it, it's kind of really unsuited to the business - like if I said the name and asked you to guess what it sells I doubt anyone would get close - so it's really not great. But I didn't know how to say that to her and the project was parked for ages anyway.

Now all of a sudden it looks like it's got an opportunity to take off and she just said to me about getting the website finished. I don't know should I mention maybe having a rethink? If I even mention it in the sense of "So I'm just wondering, is it too late to change the name?" she'll know I don't like it and she might be upset (not about me as such but that maybe others won't either). I don't know if she's tied to it legally, like if it's registered, and so changing it and the site etc would be a nightmare and then I've given her cause to doubt it when it's too late. On the other hand, am I a crap friend for not mentioning something that I think might hold the business back? It's in a very image conscious area and it's a really bad fit for that and I don't want people judging her badly.

She's been through so much and she deserves this to be the start of something amazing - and it could be - so I don't know if speaking up or shutting up is best for her.

The name is fine. Say nothing. It’s clearly doing its job.

WhiskyIrnBru · 11/08/2018 18:25

Can you pm me? I work in design- logos etc so see many different names. Many of them don't work.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 11/08/2018 18:25

Me too

FiestaThenSiesta · 11/08/2018 18:29

Are you an expert or have you just decided that you know her market base and potential business better than she does?

Because I think you’re spectacularly rude to think she should have asked for your input on her business.

I’ve known people who wanted to name their business mustard and ketchup and other “shite” names but couldn’t as a competitor already had that name in that particular market.

And agree about Apple and iPhone being shite names / hard to spell names, and yet here we are. Never mind calling a sneaker after a goddess or a chemist named after a type of shoe

Natasha2 · 11/08/2018 18:31

Can you pm me too, please.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/08/2018 18:33

Bad in what way, though. That you just don't like the name or bad where it doesn't really say mUch about the business or would the name be misleading.
If it's the latter id get her to one side and tell her.
A name is important.

CherryChatsworth · 11/08/2018 18:33

@Disquieted1 err lots of those names make perfect sense Confused

Furiosa · 11/08/2018 18:36

you've pm'd me the name and it's terrible. tell her.

StringandGlitter · 11/08/2018 18:38

All the names mentioned have massive marketing budgets (I.e millions) and high-street presence. I’m guessing your friend has neither of those. Unless she already has a strong social media presence/ word of mouth client list a poor name will make things harder for her.

Oswin · 11/08/2018 18:39

Can someone pm me the name please

Dermymc · 11/08/2018 18:39

Pm me the name, I'll give you an opinion.

cantfindname · 11/08/2018 18:48

It's a difficult situation. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't. I had a friend open a business with a dreadful name, compounded by the print style she chose. It was unreadable, un- pronounceable and plain daft. I tentatively questioned her choice and got brushed off... the business folded in under 12 months and guess who got the blame for 'not being forceful enough over the name'?

Playdohnut · 11/08/2018 18:48

Microsoft's name was originally Micro-Soft indicating it was in the microcomputers and software business.
Starbucks' full name was originally Starbucks Coffee Company.
Virgin began as Virgin Records.
Apple was Apple Computer Company until they decided to branch out, by which time they were a known name/brand.
You can simplify the name as you get brand familiarity and the market "gets" what business you're in.

Judydreamsofhorses · 11/08/2018 18:48

I teach marketing, and in terms of a brand name and visual identity, the following points are worth considering:

Is it unique?
Is it timeless?
Is it easy to spell - particularly relevant for websites
Does it sum up the business in some way? Toys R Us may sound shit, but there’s no ambiguity about what the business does. There’s a reason so many companies are called things like Sarah’s Cakes.
Is the visual identity able to be scaled up to the size of a building or down to the size of a golf ball without being distorted?
Does your target market like it and connect with it?

My students have to do a big project where they come up with a new brand, then create an advertising and PR campaign to go with it - a key part of it is doing focus groups, surveys, even online polls, to find out what the target market think. (And this is for something fictional.)

Fletchasaurus · 11/08/2018 18:52

@helpfulormeddling can you pm me please. I helped a friend set up her (now successful) business so have a bit of insight.

Pickleypickles · 11/08/2018 18:52

Is the name pastabest?

TheCatsWhiskers · 11/08/2018 18:57

PM me if you can and I'll give you my honest opinion.

minisoksmakehardwork · 11/08/2018 19:01

Feel free to pm me the name. I'm feeling nosey! Plus I have several friends who run their own businesses and we always discussed names with a 'I like but would it work' attitude.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 11/08/2018 19:04

PM me the name I’m nosy Grin

bellabasset · 11/08/2018 19:04

I think that as you and another friend both have similar concerns about the name you should ask her if she thinks it's misleading.

As other posters have pointed out some names have been condensed to a brand once they have become well known. There is also the budget she has to publicise her business.

So give her your thoughts

Standstilling · 11/08/2018 19:05

Would someone PM me please?

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 11/08/2018 19:05

I've recently spent ages naming my new business, would love to know the name if someone will pm me :)

justbinthefeckinbyebyebox · 11/08/2018 19:06

Thanks for pm helpful
It is a bit clunky, as you say, but when explained it makes sense, but not horrendous as I would have thought.
I've Googled it and it comes up with a Japanese song!!

Disquieted1 · 11/08/2018 19:06

I think the best ones for small businesses are unequivocal, such as AB Accountancy. If you didn't know what Kia or B&Q did, the name would not tell you.
Larger established companies with big marketing budgets can do what they like.

Planesmistakenforstars · 11/08/2018 19:07

Could you PM me too please? Happy to give an opinion.
