To book a hotel room as a couple and then turn up as a lp with 2 kids?

I know it's all been said before, but I'm royally pissed off. I'm trying to book a European break for October half-term to stave off post holiday blues and just in case fucking Brexit makes things more difficult and expensive next year.

I've found cheap flights but hotels are so expensive. I'm just feeling sorry for myself that as the only adult I obviously have to pay for it all but that's just the way it is for me and no one else is to blame (apart from twatty ex, obvs). But then I made the stupid mistake of changing my search terms to two adults instead of one adult and two children and the price came down nearly £50 for the room I was looking at. It's like being penalised for being single and a parent. I don't even get the logic of it. Makes me laugh how they tell you to out the kids' ages in 'to get the best deals.' Yeah right Hmm

WIBU to book the cheaper rate and then turn up with the dc?

It’ll be a double bed (for either two adults or one) and a single bed and pull out bed for kids, so it won’t make any difference if one adult or two go to the hotel so save the £50 and book for two adults and two children. Take your blow up husband (no moaning or crap sex) and spend the £50 on lots of gin and tonics.

sweetsomethings · 11/08/2018 17:54

So you think that a room with one average sized adult and two really small adults should add up to the price of two adults . It really doesn’t work like that . Plenty of adults are the size of children still use the same facility’s their size is irrelevant .

Jenala · 11/08/2018 17:55

If you try booking.com, you can put in the guests (so search 1 adult 2 children) and they will give you prices based on the room they think you'll want. This can sometimes be extortionate (e.g. when I search 2 adults plus 2 kids it suggests two rooms for £££) but then click onto the actual result and scroll down and it will show you all the available rooms with little icons indicating how many beds there are in the room. Often there are cheaper options and you can select them regardless of the guest numbers. If that makes sense? So the initial price is higher but it's worth investigating slightly more because the website is deciding what it thinks you want.

My husband was in retail, and it was always me taking the kids when they were little. I booked for all of us - especially if we were staying in England as he could fit in a day here or there. It wasn't that noticeable then, but I'm just wondering if my daughter realises that this happens (single mum of two)

JamForBrains · 11/08/2018 18:21

I've done that Jenala. Cost come down a lot. 2 adults and 4 kids is just as annoying. No one seems to have rooms for 6. 5 yes but 6 no. So we end up with 2 rooms. As kids are too young to be adults, we have to get 1 adult and 2 kids in each room and had to pay single person supplement on each room or take the grandparents with us and have 2 kids in with them. Booking.com and a little research worked wonders at getting the price down 😁. Booking direct is a good idea too.

PurplePenguins · 11/08/2018 18:24

My sister when to Turkey this year. LP with 3 kids. Last year she booked for 1 adult and 3 kids and this year she booked for 2 adults and 2 kids. Same time, same place but £££ cheaper this year 😲

Twofingers · 11/08/2018 19:29

It’s normal to pay less for children for exactly the same service.

Jenala · 11/08/2018 19:32

Jam your point about booking direct is a good one too. Sometimes if you email or call the hotel they'll put an extra bed in for a small charge. Also thinking about it on booking.com there is often a section in the small print about "children and extra beds" which says the same

bridgetreilly · 11/08/2018 19:35

It’s normal to pay less for children for exactly the same service.

In some situations (e.g. subsidized public transport), but not others (e.g. privately-operated taxis). Hotels are perfectly entitled to charge the same amount for cleaning a room and changing the bed no matter how old the person is who has used it.

OP is booking TWO adults and TWO kids
Only one adult going to be there
nothing sneaky
But it's cheaper if there are TWO adults, that is the dilemma
It's almost a fine on being a single parent
I have read this through and through and most M-Netters seem to think she is booking as a couple but taking two children.

She is booking the children in - but with 2 parents attending NOT one
I have read and re-read but your replies are all assuming OP is trying to book as a couple and sneak in a child!! That isn't what she said!

user1467536289 · 11/08/2018 19:52

Bridgetreilly - Most hotel cleaners have no idea of how many occupants have used the room. The bath has to be cleaned - linen removed. surfaces cleaned. 1 person, 4 people, The cleaning / service has to be the same. The room has to be clean and fresh for the next guests.

No, two adults and no kids. Read it again.

Try hostelbookers.com. Hostels in Germany are easily on par with travel lodge/ citizen m and so so much cheaper, proper world apart from what we think of hostels here! Hope you find something xxx

When I booked with Virgin Holidays last year, I only needed flights for dd and myself as dh was making his own way. I booked us a "twin room" which had two queen beds and planned to pay a supplement at the hotel. They didn't care as there was sleeping space for four. I'd advise looking at twin rooms, or triples. Ibis also do rooms that sleep 3, and very reasonable. They often have sales too. Holiday Inn do rooms with sofa beds, put 2 adults in search engine and then choose a room to sleep 3. Just let them know in the notes. Accor hotels who own Ibis are also pretty good if you call and ask if they'll do a double or twin room with a z bed in. Find the room you want online and call them. They price match and give you an extra bed.

sweetsomethings · 11/08/2018 20:47

Again the OP was wanting to book for two adults and turn up with 1 adult and 2kids as she believed 2 kids made up to one adult

user1457017537 · 11/08/2018 21:03

You are not going to get a double room that sleeps 5 or 6 to be fair. You need a 2 bedroom suite or adjoining rooms.

Yes,that is what I said two adults and no kids. You thought she was booking for 2 adults and 2 kids. If you realise you were wrong, what are you shouting at me for? Confused

Mrshayjay · 11/08/2018 21:30

You are paying for the size of the room and number of beds. It costs the hotel the same whether three adults sleep there or 1 adult and two children so therefore if course it will be the same price. It is not like a restaurant where is it likely that a child will consume less and therefore should pay less... You are still taking up the same size room.

nervyuyt · 11/08/2018 21:41

OMG user.

You were wrong Confused

What a response

nymum · 12/08/2018 01:42

So much confusion on this thread 😂
OP, it’s all about the number of beds/size of the room. Two adults would share a double, but an adult plus 2 kids doesn’t necesssarily assume sharing beds and costs more. Your kids must be small if you’re all happy to share a double bed. As recommended by others, call the hotel(s) and see if they’ll give you a double with a foldaway. Good luck!

MamaRaisingBoys · 12/08/2018 13:51

I watched an episode of the Hotel Inspector where the owner charged more for kids as he said they cost more in terms of wear and tear! Sticky hands on walls etc. Obviously that wasn’t working out for him Grin

Kaybush · 12/08/2018 14:03

OP, I was sympathetic until I realised you were actually angry that one adult and two children costs more than two adults Hmm

You can't really expect to get away with booking for two adults then turning up with two children instead.

I think YABU and, as previously suggested, Airbnb is probably your answer.
