To book a hotel room as a couple and then turn up as a lp with 2 kids?

I know it's all been said before, but I'm royally pissed off. I'm trying to book a European break for October half-term to stave off post holiday blues and just in case fucking Brexit makes things more difficult and expensive next year.

I've found cheap flights but hotels are so expensive. I'm just feeling sorry for myself that as the only adult I obviously have to pay for it all but that's just the way it is for me and no one else is to blame (apart from twatty ex, obvs). But then I made the stupid mistake of changing my search terms to two adults instead of one adult and two children and the price came down nearly £50 for the room I was looking at. It's like being penalised for being single and a parent. I don't even get the logic of it. Makes me laugh how they tell you to out the kids' ages in 'to get the best deals.' Yeah right Hmm

WIBU to book the cheaper rate and then turn up with the dc?

I don't know why some people have to be so rude here. Yes, I know it's aibu, but some people take joy in expressing amazement that anyone would ever think such a thing, and say what's already been said etc etc

Someone has accused me of ignoring advice, but I said last night I would look at airbnb - at least rtft if you're going to be so strident.

As I said, I see iabu. I'm just fed up of being a lp and having to cover every fucking cost by myself. But no it's not hotels' fault.

Fwiw, I often go away with the dc for 2/3 days and this city at the time I'm going seems far more expensive than any other, so I got a little fed up with it. There doesn't seem to be a Travelodge, which is where we always stay in London to make it affordable. The city is Berlin if anyone has any tips...

I dont think its clear what OP is saying, however i just did a search and the first 2 hotels i found was cheaper for 2A1c that 1A2c for the same room

BlueEyedPersephone · 10/08/2018 08:41

Try the 'motel one' brand as they are similar to TL if in Germany

gamerwidow · 10/08/2018 08:41

If 2 adults was cheaper than 1 adult and 1 child or 3 adults was cheaper than 1 adult and 2 children you’d have a point.
As it stands you’re complainjng that 3 people cost more than 2 people which of course they do Confused

gamerwidow · 10/08/2018 08:42

Actually does bruffin have it right? If so then that is unreasonable imo.

notacooldad · 10/08/2018 08:47

My problem now booking for my family - although I've given up - Me (over 40) DS (over 20) DD (over 9) = 2 adults and 1 child = 1 room as they assume 2 adults are a couple! We'd murder each other in one room all week. Can't afford 2 rooms, so cannot go away as a family.

Of course you can go away as a family. Use airbnb and state that you want the place to yourself and how many bedrooms you need.

golondrina · 10/08/2018 08:51

Get the details for a hotel you like and contact them direct and ask what they can do for you. Seriously, they may well be able to help.

bruffin · 10/08/2018 08:52

It was Berlin I looked at Grin DH and I are looking to go there next year and I really fancy the Titanic, thankfully DC are grown and if they want to come they can pay for their own room Grin

margotsdevil · 10/08/2018 09:03

Last time I was in Berlin I stayed in what was previously the "East" part of the city - definitely cheaper!

It’s still not clear if you are comparing 1adult + 2 children with 2 adults 0 children or 2 adults + 1 child.

theduchessstill · 10/08/2018 09:11

zzzzz That's tough too, but presumably a choice, or could be changed if now unaffordable?

Shampoo I have found both to be cheaper on various sites, though not necessarily all the time.

Oh dear... was that me being strident? I didn’t think I was Hmm

Anyway I don’t know what your budget is but there are triple rooms in a top hostel available, pretty much an apartment with your own bathroom, in August for £78 a night. I don’t know what you’ve been quoted but compared to booking.com that’s very good.

But I've had this trying to book 1 adult, 1 child. Also a SP. It is more expensive to book 1 A, 1 C than 2 C, so for a long time I have booked a twin with 2A. My DC and I need our own bed. They are also a pre-tween.

So in your situation I would call the hotel directly.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 10/08/2018 09:18

Have you tried loveholidays? they let you choose how many rooms and I've found it quite cheap that way. But yeah if I were you and thought I would get away with it I woudl.

Bluntness100 · 10/08/2018 09:19

Ok I get you're pissed off but think logically.

Three people are normally more expensive than two. The fact they are smaller or younger doesn't change that in hotel terms.

And yes I'd assume it's hard being a single parent, but I think that's a different wider issue than hotels Charging more for three people versus two.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 10/08/2018 09:19

op if you google holidays for single parents you can often find good deals on those pages ..just a suggestion!

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 10/08/2018 09:20

it’s not only lp who have to pay their own way. Only one of us works so, only one wage.

Same in my house. Which means we pay nothing for child care. Hmm.

Quite a lot of money is saved in having a stay at home parent.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 10/08/2018 09:22

Three people are normally more expensive than two. The fact they are smaller or younger doesn't change that in hotel terms.

Except they are probably using the fact that the children are small to give her the exact same room they would give her for two adults.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/08/2018 09:38

Berlin is fucking expensive! Out in the old East is more fun and also cheaper. I recall we had some issues booking a twin share there (often these are much more expensive than doubles). It all seems set up for doubles. Try seeing hotels that are available and asking direct how much it is 'off booking sites' for one adult and two DC. Specify the ages of the DC. I've had luck getting better prices on twins this way.

nervyuyt · 10/08/2018 09:43

Its actually very very clear if you read all the posts

cooldarkroom · 10/08/2018 09:47

its the law for fire regs to know how many "human beings" in the building.
I'd just try, & pay extra if required on arrival

Aragog · 10/08/2018 09:52

Still not clear really but obviously a booking for two people is likely to be cheaper than a booking for three people, regardless of age.

I'd understand the issue if the OP was saying that it was cheaper to book for 2 adults and child than an adult and two children.

Infact when just me and dd have gone away I have in the past just booked for two adults in a twin room, than for an adult and a child, as that has sometimes been cheaper.

But to complain that it costs more for 3 people than it does for 2 seems odd.

TerfsUp · 10/08/2018 09:54

If you booked the room as two adults and then show up on your own with two children you are being dishonest as this was a deliberate mis-representation on your part to save money.
