To book a hotel room as a couple and then turn up as a lp with 2 kids?

I know it's all been said before, but I'm royally pissed off. I'm trying to book a European break for October half-term to stave off post holiday blues and just in case fucking Brexit makes things more difficult and expensive next year.

I've found cheap flights but hotels are so expensive. I'm just feeling sorry for myself that as the only adult I obviously have to pay for it all but that's just the way it is for me and no one else is to blame (apart from twatty ex, obvs). But then I made the stupid mistake of changing my search terms to two adults instead of one adult and two children and the price came down nearly £50 for the room I was looking at. It's like being penalised for being single and a parent. I don't even get the logic of it. Makes me laugh how they tell you to out the kids' ages in 'to get the best deals.' Yeah right Hmm

WIBU to book the cheaper rate and then turn up with the dc?

@Mummaloves
Would you ever put in a sofa bed for the extra two people at no extra cost?
We stay in hotels often and I always book for four whilst thinking in my head, I'm sure we could squeeze the dc in (on camping roll mats or whatever) and half the cost. I've never tried to get away with it though!

Mummaloves · 10/08/2018 00:25

Your kids are taking up saleable bed space. Why should the hotel charge less for them than an adult. And of course it's going to be cheaper for 2 adults, thanbit is for 1 adult 2 children - you need a family room instead of a twin! Other option is conract the hotel and ask if they can put you a z bed in a twin.

We have people often ask us for a double room and 2 z beds in it (some hotels provide a z bed for free) when what they actually need is a family room ! You'll be amazed how some people try to save the difference.
Some want a discount for single occupancy of a double room - it's not our fault they are travelling alone. They can take a single for the single price, or pay the full price of a double room !

Themerrygoroundoflife · 10/08/2018 00:27

Either Airbnb or ring hotel and say you are happy to all share a double bed, will they allow it.

Mummaloves · 10/08/2018 00:27

@arethereanyleftatall no we wouldn't put a sofabed in a double or twin room. Sofabed a are in the family rooms only. If you want 4 people in the same room then you need a family room.

Ventiamore · 10/08/2018 00:28

OP, you are not wrong! It is cheaper to be one adult than two children. Grin if your two children took up exactly the same space/bedding/whatever as one fully grown adult, then I'd see your point. As it is...

arethereanyleftatall · 10/08/2018 00:28

Ah,ok. I've never actually tried to cheat the system, but it's interesting that you say lots do.

Mummaloves · 10/08/2018 00:31

@Hollygibney well that depends on whether the op actually informs the reception staff. Most people trying to get away with this shit just check in and don't say a word. I've had 4 people roll out of a double room before where they've sneaked their mates in after checking in. So in that situation no, we wouldn't be looking for 4 people in a fire, we would think there were only 2 in there.

theduchessstill · 10/08/2018 00:32

Well fine, I'm clearly being UR.

Whoever mentioned Premier Inn, they're great. And affordable. I wish they operated in the city I'm looking at as then none of this would have happened.
Your kids are taking up saleable bed space. Why should the hotel charge less for them than an adult. This is they type of comment I don't really get. They're not taking up saleable space ae they - or the second one isn't, as the rooms I'm looking at are double rooms, not triples/family. They are available for 1 adult, 2 kids, but I don't really think it fair that the second child costs so much. I'm not saying they should be free, but not a quarter of the whole cost.

And nowhere have I suggested I would turn up and demand a family room or extra beds. We all fit happily in one double, and usually end up that way whatever other beds may be in the room.

Anyway, I won't do it. Will look at airbnb or not go.

@arethereanyleftatall also depends how young the kids are, most hotels will allow an under 2yr old in the room without a problem, and put you up a travel cot. They may also do a free z bed. In that case you can get away with a double, z bed and cot - if the room is big enough.

Aus84 · 10/08/2018 00:34

Um because more linen is required for 3 people as opposed to 2. They are not going to assume you will be sharing a bed with your two children so will have made provisions in the cost for a whole extra bed/sofa set up. Extra water for the extra person showering etc. It's really not rocket science.

theduchessstill · 10/08/2018 00:34

if your two children took up exactly the same space/bedding/whatever as one fully grown adult,

They do, and a lot less than many adults.

OP posts:
Mummaloves · 10/08/2018 00:35

Op have you checked if they do z beds, or 'rollaways' as they are usually called abroad?

OlennasWimple · 10/08/2018 00:42

They won't be working on the assumption that one adult + two DC = one double bed, because they aren't then providing enough beds and most people would be annoyed at being expected to share like this

Forumqueen · 10/08/2018 00:57

When we book a holiday with our toddler we always book for a double room (two adults) most places say in the fine print that children under 12 stay free when using exsisting bed.

cheesemongery · 10/08/2018 01:14

I can see the annoyance being a lone parent myself and having been there - 1 adult + 1 child cost more than 2 adults etc...

My problem now booking for my family - although I've given up - Me (over 40) DS (over 20) DD (over 9) = 2 adults and 1 child = 1 room as they assume 2 adults are a couple! We'd murder each other in one room all week. Can't afford 2 rooms, so cannot go away as a family.

Tippexy · 10/08/2018 01:17

You’re asking why three people are more expensive than two? Confused

Dopplerineffect · 10/08/2018 01:18

I thought the fire thing had been put to bed a fair few times.

BitOfFun · 10/08/2018 01:53

I've just read that, Doppler, and it's confused me even more- it's just people shouting at each other and disagreeing Grin.

thebewilderness · 10/08/2018 02:17

If you complain they will likely give you the lower rate and possibly even a bit more off of a perk of some sort.
Always complain to hotels when you discover they have made a mistake like this. Always.

cheesemongery · 10/08/2018 02:29

You’re asking why three people are more expensive than two? are you replying to me with my 1 parent, 1 adult child and 1 child or the OP? when I said 2 adults etc.. my etc was at least one more child, however I do not want to share a double bed with my son, nor at 6'5 would he be comfortable on a sofa bed or indeed be comfortable in the same room as us for a week. Yes we could book for 2 adults and one child and request 2 rooms, thus doubling the price. However...

1 adult and 2 children has always been more expensive in my experience than 2 adults and 1 child or even 2 adults and 2 children. 1 adult and 1 child - forget it - there is no discount, they don't give you one room with a bed to share. They want to make money out of the adults spending, not the kids.

ladyme · 10/08/2018 02:37

Hotel configurations are often a nightmare. We are two parents and a young teen and sometimes we're offered a double and single (perhaps wrongly but feel weird about teen being left on her own) or a 4 person room and pay for an empty bed. I have other friends with 3 or 4 kids who end up with one adult with a kid or two and another one with the rest. I usually run the hotel and see what the can offer me as a person can usually come up with a solution better than booking.com and they're often happy to match the price ime

BlueJava · 10/08/2018 04:02

look at airbnb and ditch the hotel!

newplacenofriends · 10/08/2018 06:57

Because in a hotel without extras a child costs the same as an adult. They use just as much bedding, use just as much water, flush the loo as much.

newplacenofriends · 10/08/2018 07:00

put it this way if you book the room for 3 adults, they would set it up in exactly the same way as 1 adult, 2 children. Them being children makes 0 difference to the hotel

rabbitmat · 10/08/2018 07:02

Try searching for 2 adults and 1 child - children's places are often free and I have sometimes found this way cheaper.
