To feed someone else's cat?

Stellenbosch · 09/08/2018 21:49

It pines at me and sits on my window ledge!

However, neighbour (sent their seven yr old kid) to knock and asked me not to feed cat because it's on a 'diet'!

I want to respond with "nobody puts 'cat' on a diet!' 😂

But, it's not my cat!

Aibu to feed it? How do I stop it begging and staring in my window?

Cats make sounds like a baby crying for a reason that's to get you to respond! Just ignore it. It's cuoboard love and you could actually be making it ill. Not yr responsibility. There are loads if cats waiting for homes at The Cat Protection League. Better to adopt yr own if you want to do sone good OP.

ThisIsNotMyRealName1 · 09/08/2018 23:42

Yeah, stop feeding the cat. It has you trained but once you stop feeding it, it will move on to the next sucker.

DCat is on a special diet due to urinary tract problems. He almost died last year and straying from his diet is not good for him, our stress levels or our bank balance.

doormatof · 09/08/2018 23:43

Why's is funny to you that a cat is on a diet? you obviously don't know much about animals.
my cats on a diet because he's a fat git and his health problems flare up when he eats too much.
Cats can be on diets or special diets.

Jennyvenice · 09/08/2018 23:44

YABVVVU. Cats are always hungry and looking for more food, no matter how much they get fed. And it is obviously going to sit outside your window and meow if it knows you've fed it in the past.

When cats are fat, they live shorter, less healthy lives. They're more likely to develop diabetes, liver problems, kidney problems, heart problems etc.

It's not your cat and you've been asked not to feed it. So desist.

If you want a cat to feed then get your own.

SecretWitch · 09/08/2018 23:45

I feel for you, op. I have the sweetest tabby come sit at my kitchen window everyday just about 5pm, when I give my cats their wet food. She meows and chitters the entire time. Fortunately, I know she has a very good home, several doors down, so I don’t give in. ( I am tempted sorely, though..)

MrsGriff8 · 09/08/2018 23:49

My Mum once spent a lot of money having all kinds of tests done to establish what was wrong with her cat as she wasn't eating and it turned out the neighbour was
feeding her.

Its so hard to resist their little faces when they pretend to be all hard done by but if it's on a special diet definitely don't feed it

ilovewelshrarebit123 · 10/08/2018 00:03

My cat is on a diet, she's also on prescription food that's very expensive.

If she doesn't eat this food she becomes very poorly. If you know the neighbor doesn't want you to feed their cat why would you persist!

I had to tell my neighbor to stop feeding her as she'd got very fat, he did and she's lost loads of weight 😁

agnurse · 10/08/2018 00:12

Cats can be on diets for all KINDS of reasons:
-obesity
-hair balls
-constipation or diarrhea
-kitten or geriatric diet
-diabetes
-kidney disease
-bladder stones or infections

If you've been asked not to feed the cat, DON'T FEED IT! Some cats are VERY sensitive to changes in food and they can get seriously ill. Do you want the owner to have to clean up cat barf or get stuck with expensive vet bills?

If you ignore the cat it should go away. Be especially careful NEVER to give in and feed it - then it will learn that if it whines long enough you'll feed it and it will keep whining.

Broken11Girl · 10/08/2018 00:16

Another one saying please don't do this. I'd be fuming if Madam BrokenCat was fed elsewhere. She's a bit plump and that's not healthy, so I'm feeding her more healthily. Plus, her poop stinks If she gets fed crap.
Luckily she's too lazy to go begging for food Grin

Lalliella · 10/08/2018 00:17

FFS. YABVVVVU and you must know that surely? It’s not your pet. It could be on a special diet for all sorts of reasons. You might make it ill if you feed it. Do you really want to do that? Grow up.

tildaMa · 10/08/2018 02:55

YABVU.

Do not feed a cat you know to have a different owner, unless you're willing to share the vet bills.
If you must give in to the pleading eyes, chat to your neighbours which treats is it allowed and stick to that. The cat is not hungry.

malfoyy · 10/08/2018 03:16

Funny that OP has vanished.

Drycleanonly7 · 10/08/2018 03:49

Please don't do this. A 'kind' lady used to do this to one of my cats. Despite my feeding my own cat my cat decided it preferred this other ladies' house. I never saw my cat. In the end I had to have strong words with this 'kind' lady to stop letting my cat in her house. Please get your own cat if you wish. The owner does not mean diet as in weight loss. If you feed a cat that is already getting fed at its home then your are overfeeding the cat and will make it ill. It is common sense.

Laserbird16 · 10/08/2018 04:43

YABU my cat was getting portly and we were trying to help her lose weight but found out all our weighing and playing was undone as she would take a little tour of the street and top up from the neighbors. Greedy guts!

Broken11Girl · 10/08/2018 05:07

Checking with the owner what treats the cat is allowed is a good idea. I get Nature's Menu healthier treats.
You can also pet, talk to and play with it. It might want attention never met a cat that didn't.

enbh · 10/08/2018 05:08

YABU - it's not your pet, you shouldn't be feeding it! I hate when people do this!

cloudyweewee · 10/08/2018 05:42

One of my neighbours only feeds her cats outside because she says it makes a mess in the kitchen to feed them indoors. She has 2 cats one of which is a huge because it gets all the food. The skinny one spends so much time in our garden that my DH built it a shelter during the winter. It was sleeping outside in the snow. So yes we feed it once a day but I wouldn't have thought I was BU.

Frazzled2207 · 10/08/2018 09:26

Ywnbu to feed a cat if you didn't know if it was being fed but in this case you know that it is being fed and the diet will be for a reason so yanbu.

Frazzled2207 · 10/08/2018 09:26

I mean yabu.

Racecardriver · 10/08/2018 09:29

YABVU. People do put cats on diets. Those people are called vets. The cat may have an intolerance or it may be diabetic or sonething. You could make the poor thing very sick.

gamerwidow · 10/08/2018 09:47

It’s extremely cruel to overfeed a cat just because you enjoy it. Some cats are greedy buggers and need their food intake restricted for their health. My cat would have you believe he is starving to death when he is perfectly well fed. He will eat anything including junk food. If I gave in to every sad look he’d be the size of a house.

Lucyccfc · 10/08/2018 09:52

A neighbour of mine used to feed my cat. Cost me a fortune in vets bills as she had a liver problem and was on prescription food. Dickhead of a neighbour only stopped when I presented them with a vets bill.

Please, please don't feed other people's cats - you could make them very ill or kill them.

FlyingElbows · 10/08/2018 10:10

We've got several of you round our way. One who was enraged at a local cat coming in to her house. Enraged so much that her solution to remove it was to feed it! Another who loves the "kitties" so much that she's decided every cat which isn't hers is an unloved stray and must be tempted with food then trapped so it "rescued" by the cats protection people. Seriously, why can't people just leave cats alone. If it's not yours and it's not injured then shoo it away. Oh and if you smell of cheap perfume and fags then it extra applies to you because just as I'm writing this my long haired cat has come stinking as he's clearly been out visiting!

Beaverhausen · 10/08/2018 10:12

I currently have someone else's cats who come and help themselves to howard the strays food. Buy one who I have nicknamed Henry gets a pouch of Felix twice a day.

I have posted on our community Facebook to see whose he might be with no response.

SeventyNineBottlesOfWine · 10/08/2018 10:14

We lost our beloved family pet due to a selfish woman who did precisely this.
I asked her to stop feeding him but she still kept on doing it.
We never saw him anymore as she kept him at her house but would occasionally come round when he needed veterinary treatment and tell us he was was ill and we needed to take him to the vets.
I ended up having to sign ownership of our beloved pet over to her as I never saw him to be able to monitor his health and he's become ill without me even knowing until she knocked on my door a week after to let me know.
We considered all our options such as keeping him in as a house cat so she couldn't get her hands on him, but thought this would be unfair to him as he loves the outdoors, or sending him to the RSPCA as we were unable to care for him due to never seeing him, but again, this would be unfair on him.
In the end the fairest option for our cat was to sign ownership over to this horrible woman as she could then at least monitor his health and would be able to take him to the vets and have him treated should he need it.
I had to take my young daughter round with me to sign over ownership and she was bawling her eyes out at losing her pet, but she wanted what was best for him.
This stupid woman actually said to me "I never intended to hurt a child, I'm not like that".
I told her she was like that as she'd effectively stolen our family pet.
I can't even look at the woman anymore.
When we pass in the street I blank her as I'm furious with her for putting us in this position.
If you want a cat- get one from a cat home. There's plenty of animals in there needing homes.
Don't feed and steal someone's pet!
