To feed someone else's cat?

It pines at me and sits on my window ledge!

However, neighbour (sent their seven yr old kid) to knock and asked me not to feed cat because it's on a 'diet'!

I want to respond with "nobody puts 'cat' on a diet!' 😂

But, it's not my cat!

Aibu to feed it? How do I stop it begging and staring in my window?

I had some dickhead feeding one of my greedy gits and he ended up extremely overweight. I had to keep him in for weeks to help him to lose weight which I found very difficult and cruel as he loves going out. I had two cats run over and killed because some other tosser across the road kept feeding my very healthy looking cats, despite being told not to as a) they have a good home and b) they were risking their lives crossing the road. Stop feeding other people's pets and get your own bloody pet fgs

SabineUndine · 09/08/2018 22:07

*low phosphate diet

LucyAutumn · 09/08/2018 22:12

Yabvu.

Cats are opportunists and will go to where they think food is available to them. Just because this happens does not mean or give you any right to feed this particular cat. To make it stop DON'T respond when it comes meowing.

It's owner has also asked you not to feed it. That should be the end of it.

A brief history of my cat:
Cat has feckless owner who regularly goes out, cops off with someone and strolls home 24 hours later to a hungry cat.
Cat is adopted by me.
Cat eats anything that is put in front of him and ends up a fat blob of lard.
Cat is put on strict low-calorie dry food diet to lose weight.
Cat loses weight but ends up in vet hospital (costing a fortune) with severe colitis and constipation, and not for the first time, probably due to overeating somewhere.

Cat goes on wet food only diet along with laxitives to prevent future constipation issues.
Cat grows old and develops thyroid and kidney problems.
Cat requires medication twice a day. It is imperative that he comes home at mealtimes, and is not tempted to hang out somewhere with a better quality of food and skip his medication.
Cat will probably be put on a special kidney diet in the near future. Feeding non-kidney friendly food will be frowned upon.

So we have struggled with our cat's diet all his life. DON'T FEED OTHER PEOPLE'S CATS.

Ughhhh there was a woman on my old street that kept trying to feed my cat.

She did my head in.

It's not acceptable to feed someone else's pet - you could cause it harm. Plus you've been asked not to.

YBU - stop it

Trinity66 · 09/08/2018 22:32

Of course yabu

multiplemum3 · 09/08/2018 22:35

Don't be a prick and feed someone else's cat. I bet you wouldn't pay half the vet bill if needed would you? If you wanna feed a cat then fucking get your own

Marriedwithchildren5 · 09/08/2018 22:38

They sent their 7 year old child!? Confused

Lana1234 · 09/08/2018 22:41

Yabu. Respect the owners wishes please. Had drama with a neighbour over this with my cat. My greedy guts ginger tom would eat any crap she fed him then come in eat his food here and became overweight and would also throw up sometimes. Had to be extremely blunt with her in telling her not to feed him and even though she now won’t acknowledge me at all my cats back to being a healthy weight

malfoyy · 09/08/2018 22:42

One of my cats has been lured away by a selfish twat like you.

She's due her jabs and worming but won't come to us so is now at risk.

Have some common sense.

Raven88 · 09/08/2018 23:00

Don't feed someone else's cat. Sho it away if it's pining is bothering you so much and maybe get your own cat. A cats diet is important if there is health reasons and you might be giving the cat something that doesn't agree with his stomach. It's almost as if you want the cat to be permanently yours.

Celebelly · 09/08/2018 23:02

Just ignore it.

Junkmail · 09/08/2018 23:03

Please don’t feel other people’s cats. One of mine is on a prescription diet to keep his kidneys from deteriorating. I’d be very very upset if I learned that someone wasn’t feeding him however good intentioned.

Junkmail · 09/08/2018 23:04

That should read was feeding him damn autocorrect.

pawsies · 09/08/2018 23:08

Weird. People harp on about their cats being on a diet but they have no idea what their cats are eating outdoors even if they aren't being fed. They might be raiding bins, catching birds/mice etc. I'm not justifying neighbours feeding cats but if you are that concerned you'd try and keep your cat in or build a catio or something.

CallingDannyBoy · 09/08/2018 23:11

Having spent £100 today on medicine and special cat food for my cat to keep him healthy and alive i’m really pissed off if anyone feeds him. I’d like to keep him healthy thanks.

CallingDannyBoy · 09/08/2018 23:13

Mine is too old to catch anything but is a dab hand at pleading hunger or just going in somewhere and chancing it. Please don’t feed him. He likes being outside and lying in the sun don’t deprive him of that.

strawberrypenguin · 09/08/2018 23:17

YABU plenty of reasons the cat could be on a special diet. Don't feed other people's cats. You want to feed a cat that much get your own

NT53NJT · 09/08/2018 23:19

Depends if you like your neighbours enough to respect their wishes or if you're not fussed about it looking through your window. Will soon stop when it realises it's not getting food from you . Everyone on my avenue feeds my cat, he's a veteran of the avenue being there over 15 years ( longer than most of the residents !)

ChaffyMcChaff · 09/08/2018 23:26

Have you read Six Dinner Sid? Cats are crafty buggers 😂

YABVU

MyFriendGiraffrey · 09/08/2018 23:36

It never ceases to amaze me how many people think that it's ok to feed someone else's cat. Of course the cat will keep turning up and pining for food if you keep feeding it!

Stop feeding it and it will stop staring into your window. If you want it to get the message sooner just shoo it away a few times.

Somanymistakes · 09/08/2018 23:37

DONT FEED THE CAT!

Some bastard is feeding mine. He hardly comes home anymore. He is a greedy sod and would eat any food offered. I'm so pissed off that people do this. We had this happen once before. It's much longer this time.

I pay vets bills, insurance, microchip fees, have loved and brought up the cat after I chose him from a rescue. Yet he has no loyalty whatsoever and has swapped my love for a plate of wet food from a cat thief (Rather than the good quality kibble he gets at home).

If the cat isn't yours, don't bloody feed him.

Savvylover211 · 09/08/2018 23:38

Vet nurse here, YABVU. You can't say nobody puts cat on a diet. Obesity is a MASSIVE issue in cats and feeding it extra food on top of his own food which has probably been calculated to help him lose weight will probably just make the cat even fatter. Its just as unhealthy for animals to overweight as it is with people, except it takes less food for them to gain more weight. Obesity in cats is also one of the major contributing factors to cats developing diabetes. You could end up playing a part in a cat developing a life long condition which will require it to be medicated twice a day for the rest of its life. Stop feeding the cat and it will eventually learn that you won't feed it and it will stop pining at your window.

Spilledmycoffee · 09/08/2018 23:39

I spend a fortune on cat food. He's not on a special diet, it's just the best quality food available because I'm a bit pedantic about my cat.

Found out that a neighbour from my previous address was feeding him absolute rubbish 🙄. Made the money I was spending on good quality food with the goal of him living a long healthy life seem a bit wasted.
