To not buy new uniform for the kids for September?

Particularly dd who js going into year eleven. Tbh I have always bought pretty much new everything as previously she's been a bit heavy wearing on clothes due to Dyspraxia. This last couple of years this has improved and between study leave and leaving early after exams it seems a bit wasteful.

She's only going to be in till May. Her blazer is school provided and still fits, her tie is new as the iron fell over on the old one!
Her skirts are too short so will need replacing.

Her shoes are worn but still plenty of wear in them. I could give them a good polish but it would be obvious they weren't new.

Blouses all fit and in decent condition but again would be obvious they weren't new.

PE kit still fits and has plenty of wear in it. The hoodie does however have a mark on.

She has a new bag.
Last years coat still fits and is in good condition.

What do you buy new each year?

Only what needs to be replaced. Thought that's what everyone did?

SoyDora · 08/08/2018 18:33

Surely you only replace what needs replacing?

IceCreamFace · 08/08/2018 18:33

Why would you replace stuff that fits and hasn't fallen to bits? Especially when she only has one more year!

Mousefunky · 08/08/2018 18:33

I buy most things new every year tbh. Always new shoes because I buy a size up and they last the school year therefore by July they are absolutely destroyed. I do occasionally recycle polo shirts/skirts/trousers between siblings if they’re fairly new and still fit well but mostly, I will buy all new.

I had a friend in school whose parents were well off but tight AF and she wore the same shoes and coat till they were literally falling apart. It’s horrible.

In your case though, I’d buy new shoes and skirts. Maybe blouses too if it’s ‘obvious they aren’t new’ as you say, they’re cheap enough.

KateGrey · 08/08/2018 18:34

I’ve seen people buy all new. We only buy new if it doesn’t fit or is ruined.

Hopeandeggs · 08/08/2018 18:34

Ittooshallpass before now due to her Dyspraxia everything has always seemed to need replacing hence we have got this far before questioning!

Everyone always seems to have new stuff when they go back.

I'm only buying what needs replaced. She will use last years skirts, summer dresses & shoes.

wildbhoysmama · 08/08/2018 18:41

I always buy new for all 3 DSs- even the stuff that's not destroyed still looks worn, eg shirts not quite so white as they were ( but okay if they are blue/ grey/ yellow whatever), the only thing I do is reuse a wool jumper / shorts if they still look good, esp for Fridays! Blazer/ coat/ bag of course we all keep these. But, it's completely up to you - as long as your child is well dressed, comfortable and happy, which I'm sure she is.

helen650 · 08/08/2018 18:46

I only buy new shoes and anything needs replacing, usually polo shirts as they have pen/lunch marks! I didn’t realise people bought shoes 1 size bigger ...

TheBitterBoy · 08/08/2018 18:47

I buy new throughout the year as and when things need replacing. DS will be going back to school in everything he had in July as everything still fits and is decent. I anticipate needing to buy shoes around Christmas as he inconveniently outgrew his previous pair at half term so I had to get new ones. I don't see what's so special about September unless they are starting primary or secondary. I don't throw out all my own clothes and replace them every 12 months unless they are worn out!

SoyDora · 08/08/2018 18:48

Too big shoes must be fairly uncomfortable!

Lavende · 08/08/2018 18:49

I have one more year until high school but I don’t plan on replacing blazers and ties and skirts/trousers every year. Shirts yes because they get tatty and look a mess. Shoes, depends if they need replacing. Bags etc I would expect to probably get new ones due to ‘fashion trends’ etc. As it is now I only buy what needs replacing and for my three that’s just polo shirts and shoes for the youngest.

shutlingsloe · 08/08/2018 18:49

Ive never bought all new since year seven, dd had her PE kit for five years, one new blazer after her year seven one, same skirts throughout. Certainly would try to get away with buying nothing new for year eleven!!

FlorencesHunger · 08/08/2018 18:50

I would buy just whatever needs replacing. I get two years out of most of my dds school wear as she is so skinny and always has room to grow and isn't harsh on her clothes. Only thing I buy new is shoes, socks and tights etc.

Sailinghappy · 08/08/2018 18:59

I thought everyone did all new for September? Maybe that’s just the norm by us.

SoyDora · 08/08/2018 19:01

Mine is only starting school this year so I have obviously bought all new, but I can’t see any reason anyone would replace stuff that still fits and is in good condition, just because it’s September? That’s the mark of a true consumerist society.
