To think DH should not go to work

I have D&V. DH due to leave for work at 2. I would manage then til bedtime with the aid of CBeebies. But DS2 (13 months) seems to have acquired an ear infection. He’s constantly screaming and pulling his ear. He is prone to them and has already had a perforated eardrum. GP can’t see him til later this afternoon - I can’t takr him because I don’t want to infect everyone else in the surgery, and can barely walk the length of the flat atm, never mind drive. FIL who would usually help is stranded at home waiting for a car part. AIBU to think DH just needs to not go in, at least til after he’s taken DS2 to the doctor? It’s not fair to leave a baby screaming in agony just because he doesn’t want to take any more unexpected time off (we recently had a major childcare issue that meant he took some very short-notice leave, and I had laser eye surgery this Monday so he took yesterday off - again was shortish notice as my date was moved, so he was scrambling a bit for someone to cover.) I do see where he’s coming from but DS2 is in absolute misery and needs to start antibiotics as soon as possible. Nurofen and calpol aren’t touching the sides!

No, YANBU. You're sick and so is his son. As you've said, you risk infecting everyone at the surgery with D&V if you take him (let alone feeling rubbish).

He just needs to suck it up this time.

thelittlestwo · 08/08/2018 12:05

It depends can afford disciplinary action? Where I work this would be a formal warning which for some people may be one warning to many and result in job loss

Glumglowworm · 08/08/2018 12:05

YANBU

DS needs to go to the doctor and you can’t take him because you’ll likely infect half the people in the waiting room with D&V. So DH needs to take him.

thelittlestwo · 08/08/2018 12:05

Do you have any friends nearby who could help?

joystir59 · 08/08/2018 12:07

Can't you take some Lomotil and take your son to the Dr? Your oh risks his job if he keeps having time off

SalveGrumio · 08/08/2018 12:07

He has a statutory right to dependents leave, granted it might be unpaid. He can't be disciplined for it.

thelittlestwo · 08/08/2018 12:07

Or could dp go to fils for him to drop dp at work and then borrow dps car for a dr trip?

MrsSteptoe · 08/08/2018 12:11

Taxi for the FIL? I know that may be impossible, I'm just throwing it out there

lapenguin · 08/08/2018 12:21

Could he not try and take ds to an urgent care? He may get seen quicker than the appointment, especially if the GP is running late!

Racecardriver · 08/08/2018 12:25

Why can't he take DS to a walk in centre or pick up FIL?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/08/2018 12:26

Would his boss be sympathetic to why he's off again? Your little boy needs to see the GP, absolutely but your DH has a job he needs to keep.

Is there nobody else at all you could ask?

Quartz2208 · 08/08/2018 12:29

its a difficult one as given the fact he has done a lot at short notice I can see his concern regarding discplinary action

I agree is there an urgent care he could go to or FIL asks a neighbour to take the car part

Jaxhog · 08/08/2018 12:32

if it puts his job at risk then he goes to work.

RideOn · 08/08/2018 12:34

What about ringing GP to ask for a call back and see if can be done by phone? You could bring DS2 at later date for them to look at ears/review progress.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/08/2018 12:35

Yes ringing GP and explaining the situation is a good idea.

Neverender · 08/08/2018 12:37

I wouldn't bother with the Dr's - last time DD had an ear infection they said they no longer prescribe for this. Problem solved...ish!

DarlingNikita · 08/08/2018 12:39

Can't you take some Lomotil and take your son to the Dr?

She's still infectious even if she takes Lomotil.

MotsDHeureGoussesRames · 08/08/2018 12:45

Yes, please don't take Lomotil and take him in to the doctor! FFS what a selfish suggestion. It's bad enough to inflict D&V on otherwise healthy people but you don't know who is sitting in the waiting room on chemotherapy or otherwise immunocompromised. Really difficult situation, OP, but I think your DH needs to take him or your FIL could get his carpart tomorrow and take him in a taxi, which I'm sure you would pay for. Hope your house of pestilence is soon recovered!

Butterymuffin · 08/08/2018 12:47

If DS is prone to these infections, I presume he's had antibiotics prescribed before - ring the doctor and ask if the prescription can be sent straight to the pharmacy given your situation. Then your DH can hot foot it to pick them up and then go to work Smile

InfiniteVariety · 08/08/2018 12:47

Can't your FIL come in a taxi?

Pebblesandfriends · 08/08/2018 12:48

Of course he shouldn't go in. He needs to take his son to the doctor's. Why is this your responsibility to sort?

glintandglide · 08/08/2018 12:49

Do you work? How are you juggling time off with your employer?

I sympathise with your DH because some employers can be really really awful about this and at the end of the day, your employment is extremely important so has to be considered

AnnieAnoniMoose · 08/08/2018 12:50

Jesus wept. I can’t even contemplate working for a company where you are too scared of losing your job to stay home when your wife has D&V and your baby needs to go to the DRs. I’d be mortified if my staff had given it a second thought.

Grinds my gears.

continuallychargingmyphone · 08/08/2018 12:50

I’m a single parent. I would just go to the doctor. The doctor is for ill people, it’s not very nice but necessary.

mineisarossini · 08/08/2018 12:50

Call the GP and tell the doctor what has happened, he should be able to prescribe antibiotics and then you can send a taxi to collect the script and go to the chemist and them back to you. Yes it is expensive but the only way it seems.

Give baby calpol and put warm press on ear for comfort
