Hive!

You were bloody marvellous when I asked a question here a few weeks ago. Thank you.

I now have another one, if you don't mind.

In the late fifties, how much would a secretary or Girl Friday earn per week?

Huge difference between 1950 and 1959, so you need to be more specific. Also where...wages higher in London, higher in cities than rural etc. Also give an idea of the business size and type....

Average wage in 1950 was 5 pound 12 shillings a week, going up to 9 pounds 15 shillings in 1959. But thats average across the board, women tended to earn less. A trained secretary in 1955 in London might have made 4 pounds a week?

1959, thanks, London. Small business/one man band plus secretary/girl friday

My first job as a secretary in 1960 paid £6 30 shillings a week.

KoolAidPickle · 08/08/2018 13:39

In that scenario I would say 5 to 6 pounds a week.

Thank you!
