To feel nobody should watch the new Netflix show "insatiable"

I'm a young woman who like many other young women in my generation has struggled with weight issues and ED's.

This new Netflix show is about an unpopular "fat" girl who becomes skinny over a summer break and goes on to become popular. There was a huge petition by a young woman named Florence Given who tried to get the show cancelled due to a huge proportion of young girls and women speaking out saying the advert for the show alone was enough to trigger their eating disorder. I believe it got over a hundred thousand signatures.

The show has gone on to be shown on Netflix and I honestly dread to think of how many young girls would be influenced by the poor story line. Why in 2018 are we still telling young women the only way they will be attractive and liked is if they are skinny and attractive? I find it horrifying.

It’s on from the 10th, I can’t say it was on my radar before this thread, it’s on my list now though

Barbaro · 08/08/2018 19:01

We are going to have nothing to watch soon except boring tripe approved by the government if the world keeps going this way.

1984 here we come.

Thursdaydreaming · 09/08/2018 03:42

Are you secretly the producer OP because I just added it to my list. Comes out tomorrow Smile

Amortentia · 09/08/2018 04:14

Oh good, ive been looking forward to watching this. I would also recommend Dietland on Amazon prime too.

kmc1111 · 09/08/2018 04:14

I’ve seen the first five episodes.

It’s a not a show about a girl losing weight and becoming popular and all her problems being solved. It’s a weird dark dramedy about a girl losing weight, becoming popular, then wreaking revenge on her bullies from inside the clique. This is not presented as a series of emotionally healthy choices, the point is it’s fucked up.

Think Heathers. It’s not nearly as good, but that’s the kind of tone we’re talking about here. Just as that film wasn’t suggesting it’s a good idea to blow up your school, this TV show isn’t suggesting you go get your jaw wired shut so you’ll be cool.

Springtimeflowers · 09/08/2018 07:45

I used to have an ED in my teens (anorexia), and although I have been fine for many years now, will sometimes turn over the channel if I feel that it wouldn't be good for me to watch something. As far as I'm concerned, it's up to me to take accountability for what I choose to watch.

For example; I would never watch Love Island, as I don't believe it sends a healthy message. However if someone else choses to watch it, that is their decision. We can't ban everything we don't like.

RobotOverlord · 09/08/2018 08:03

Oh FGS Hmm As with everything in life, if you don’t like the message, don’t look at it. It’s not difficult. I absolutely agree that nobody has the right to fat shame, and anyone who would belittle another person for any aspect of their physical appearance is a massive twat, but I feel like this whole thing is going too far.

I’m fat, very much so, health problems and 2 children in quick succession left me 80 pounds overweight. I decided to change, now 10 weeks on I’m 60 pounds overweight. All I did was restrict the calories I eat in a day to a sensible level without banning any foods as long as I can fit them into my calorie allowance, and try to get more active whenever I can. I’ll continue this until I’m at a healthy weight, then continue to keep an eye on what I eat forever to make sure I don’t gain it back According to some fat activists, this means I have an eating disorder caused by the media telling us that the only way to be happy is to be thin. This is absolute bollocks. If people are happy with their body as it is, it’s absolutely their right to remain that way and expect to not be abused for it. But equally, it’s anyone else’s right to say they aren’t happy, and take steps to remedy it without being branded some kind of traitor.

Being fat is unhealthy, that’s an undisputed medical fact. If people can live with that fact and be happy regardless, good for them, they shouldn’t be abused for that. But more and more there’s a sense that anyone who doesn’t toe that line is wrong, and that’s equally as damaging to these impressionable girls everyone’s so concerned about, who may want to lose weight but feel like they have to accept their body as it is because the fat acceptance movement says so.

IKnowItsTIMHONKSTIMHONKS · 09/08/2018 08:12

Buzzfeed did an article on how horrible and "fat shaming" it is. I'm obese as fuck but you can bet your ass I'm gonna watch it now, purely because it's controversial.

MissusGeneHunt · 09/08/2018 09:25

@Temptressofwaikiki.... Absolutely perfect!!!

The amazing thing about viewing, is that you don't have to!! Easy!!

Fed up of the snowflake nanny state rubbish.

Remember 'Why don't you..' in the 70s and early 80s? Whydontyoujustswitchoffyourtelevisionsetandgoanddosomethinglessboringinstead.... 🎵🎵🎵🎵❄️❄️❄️❄️

KoolAidPickle · 09/08/2018 11:37

Being overweight is going in the same direction as smoking and becoming socially unacceptable. It isn’t pleasant but that’s how things are

I don't agree, I think it used to be socially unacceptable to be very overweight and in recent decades this has very much disappeared. From the standpoint of everyone feeling nice about themselves its a good thing but like smoking, things being socially unacceptable helps to stop people doing unhealthy things. When it was less socially acceptable to be very overweight, much fewer people were. And that was a good thing, not a bad thing.

No, nobody should be feeling bad about themselves and their size personally, but is it good that a message of "everyone can be the size they want and no-one should ever say anything about it" is promoted?

TemptressofWaikiki · 10/08/2018 13:19

Ooooh Op, thanks again for the heads-up. It started today and am watching on my day off.

ShatnersWig · 10/08/2018 13:21

The OP is not outraged. She's a marketeer. Blatantly obvious, bearing in mind she's never posted here before. And she's done a good job.

WhyDidIEatThat · 10/08/2018 14:00

This is like inverse astroturfing or something- it worked though, I’m watching 😀

Maelstrop · 10/08/2018 15:24

Thanks, OP, will watch it, I need something to entertain me over the holiday.

Nothing wrong with losing weight to be healthy. Would you also ban prom king/Queen which always goes to the popular, people of average weight?

MozzieMagnet · 10/08/2018 17:01

Me (size 20) and DD are binge watching it, six episodes in.
I also watched Dietland on prime.
The reviews of Insatiable have been utterly horrendous but we are enjoying it whilst eating peaches and oreos.
The trailer does not reflect the show's content which is teen movie conventions/pageant preparation.
It is perfectly fine popcorn fodder.

Claredemoon · 10/08/2018 18:05

I'm watching it now, it reminds me of all the teen films from when I was younger, it's like a tamer version of Drop Dead Gorgeous (spoiler: so far no murder). It a little dark but still pretty fluffy. Personally, I found the scene in Mean Girls where Regina George gets 'fat-shamed' after she gains a few pounds far more damaging for my self-image on first view than anything i've seen so far (and that film is lauded for it's 'positive' message). Also I really don't think the series is aimed at teenagers, more adult women who grew up watching all those teen films from the late 90s early 00s, the films of Drew Barrymore are used as a reference many times and despite being set now there is very retro feel and the adult characters get a lot of the storyline.

MozzieMagnet · 10/08/2018 19:20

What clare said. Am now 3/4 of the way through and it is thoroughly entertaining drivel like a telenovela in places. Great shame that it has been pre-judged as there are some decent performances.
Netflix did not renew Everything sucks because only a few binged it so I am happy to binge this one to help the stats as DD loves the lead (I was subjected to Hey Jessie for several months). So yes, it's very teen, very silly in places and totally escapist but if you liked mean girls ugly betty miss congeniality soap operas etc then it is worth a watch.

Rosetree7 · 10/08/2018 19:37

@spanishrobot

Thanks for the heads-up. I would never have watched this if you hadn't posted to highlight it.

Also, I don't take orders from anyone, so the fact you are telling me NOT to watch it, makes me want to watch it more....................... Wink

RedPanda2 · 10/08/2018 19:38

Have you read the reviews? It sounds garbage in many ways. Fatphobia is so boring. Don't pretend you want people to lose weight for health, Barbra. You don't.

Rosetree7 · 10/08/2018 19:40

@RedPanda2

Don't pretend you want people to lose weight for health, Barbra. You don't.

Who is Barbra? Confused

honeysucklejasmine · 11/08/2018 00:10

It's wonderfully overacted, I'm loving it. Very telenovela.

And actually, as someone recovering from a binge eating issue, I found the crawfish scene in particular really resonated.

TemptressofWaikiki · 11/08/2018 01:52

Had a day off to myself without DH, DC and dogs, so binge watched the whole series. I actually really liked it, despite it OTT plot lines. I felt it was aimed at adults and the kind of façade people keep up that was slowly eroded and stripped away.

9amTrain · 11/08/2018 02:20

Oh get a life.

TheStoic · 11/08/2018 05:04

Yeah it looks pretty dire, OP. Unfortunately, some women and girls will watch it in droves. While they’re taking a break from the kardashians.

I wish everyone would watch Dietland instead.

Theworldisfullofgs · 11/08/2018 05:24

Maybe you should watch it and make up your own mind.
The buzzfeed article was lazy journalism.

It's actually v v funny and the main character is neither happy thin or fatter.

It's definitely worth a watch.
